In 2021 Velocity Press published Who Say Reload: The Stories Behind the Classic Drum & Bass Records of the 90s, an oral history of the records that defined jungle/drum & bass straight from the original sources. The deluxe coffee table book has since sold thousands of copies and prompted many to comment that it should have an accompanying soundtrack. Now author Paul Terzulli has compiled a Who Say Reload album. However, where the book focused solely on classics and anthems, the compilation takes a different route and offers up a selection of top-quality tunes from some of the scene’s most respected artists and labels. Like the book, the album covers the genre’s nineties golden era, and the many styles of D&B are represented. Pioneering producers and crowd-pleasing favourites sit alongside a few sought-after obscurities by the unsung heroes of the scene. Most importantly, there are some absolute bangers! The 16 tracks are spread over two volumes of 2 x 12"s, and there is also a 13-track digital version, taking you on a journey through music forged from raw breakbeats and basslines that soundtracked a culture of all-night raves, specialist record shops and pirate radio stations. Jungle/drum & bass is approaching its 30th anniversary. Its sonic and cultural legacy is still being felt today. There’s still plenty of old music that might be “new” to some, and these tunes still pack as much of a punch as they did back in the day. The story of hardcore begins in an industrial estate in outer Frankfurt in 1989 with a twenty-year-old hip hop head dreaming of being a rockstar, who becomes a doomsday techno prophet instead. From grisly episodic nightmares about the phuture of the planet, Dance or Die plots a dark positive route through the reinforced steel and concrete clubbing institutions of newly reunified Germany to the pre-criminalised outlaw rave movement of the early ’90s, where nosebleed sound systems reclaimed the streets, abandoned buildings and unmanned fields of Britain to party as a mode of resistance and symbol of ultimate freedom, before spiraling in exile through the warehouses and squats of Paris and Amsterdam, and the f*cking hostile wastelands of New York’s outer boroughs.
Examining the intercity axes that developed between crucible spaces and relentlessly touring DJs who sacrificed sleep and sanity for the mission; the youth subcultures that evolved in diehard tangent to the massive gabber movement in the Netherlands, and Number One’s Hardcore Warriors in North Italy; and the autonomous record distribution networks that evolved from stalls set up on the edge of London dancefloors, and from piling into vans to drive across state lines and country borders to sell enough vinyl to fill up the petrol tank, Dance or Die reveals the marrow-deep devotion that defines the global hardcore community to this day.
Riding in convoy behind the artists, promoters and fans who united across gaping sonic and social chasms in their pledge to live for the music or die, this countercultural history of hardcore navigates through the media stigmas, drug overdoses and football violence of the ’90s to the archivists and new generation who resuscitated the culture through the 2010s, whilst addressing the ideological conflict between success and selling out, and the wounding moral panics that have left permanent scars.

The Evolver LP is the sum total of Chris Liebing's three decades at the beating heart of techno. It's the record only someone whose first break as a techno DJ was playing five hours at Sven Väth's infamous Omen in Frankfurt - and who has ridden out every twist and turn of life and subcultures since, while remaining rooted in the true school, dark, sweaty techno sweat pits of the world - could have made. It's the result of deep introspection, but it's about utter immediacy. It's the sound of someone previously driven along by compulsion and happenstance at last finding the confidence to be utterly intentional about their practice, allowing them to take the most classic, familiar, proven elements from the past and render them completely new.
Evolver is also Liebing's first completely solo album. There are collaborations, yes: with old friends from the OG techno generation, Luke Slater, Speedy J, and The Advent, all on uncompromising form, and with new generation figurehead Charlotte De Witte, who provides a thrilling narration of total surrender to the moment on acid clarion call "Symphonie des Seins". But unlike all Liebing's albums to date, there's no co-pilot. Every structure, every mixdown, every choice serves his singular vision of how his untold immersion in the surging currents of the world's greatest clubs should sound. The elements are all those forged in the white heat of Omen and Tresor in the mid 90s - brutal repetition, titanium kick drums, industrial atmospherics, but also dark rave euphoria, ever present surging acid lines just on the cusp of trance, and just enough human voices to remind you of bodies on the dance floor - but rendered with all the extraordinary accumulated skill and technological developments since then.
It's Chris's vision entirely, his musings on sound, technology, and life birthing tracks like "Roy Batty." Inspired by thoughts of AI becoming sentient and hungering for more life like Rutger Hauer's titular Blade Runner character, it was one of the first tracks to emerge and a foundation stone for the album. And in pursuit of that vision, it's built like a "proper album". The anticipation and menace of intro "Unfold" tip over into the glowing hot high drama psychedelia of "Symphonie…" then the breathless headlong rush of The Advent collab and on through an unfolding narrative that goes deep, goes dark, opens out into grand vistas, takes strange turns before finally landing on the alien landscape of… well… "Endtrack".
Not everything is pummelling on Evolver - the dazzling title track feels like you've been welcomed into the courtly dance of a higher dimension civilisation, and the audacious Speedy J collab "Shaping Frequencies" is a beatless flow that tests the boundaries between signal and noise. But for all its complexity, conceptualism, and stylistic branching out, every last part unmistakably powered by that dark techno-cavern energy above all else. All of it positively radiates the qualities of Liebing's greatest work and sets to date - but somehow even more so than before. With a glorious flourish of melodious club abstraction, cult producer Quirke makes a welcome return by delivering his most upfront tracks to date for Dekmantel.

Throughout 2025, Tresor Records will reactivate Detroit house and techno originator Blake Baxter's vast Tresor catalogue digitally in chronological order, starting with 1992’s Dream Sequence, closely followed by his 1995 album, Endless Reflection. To inaugurate and celebrate this retrospective of one the genre’s true founders, an artist whose connections to Tresor go back to the very beginning, the label announces a special 12” release, Dream Sequence X, featuring remastered tracks from the early days and highlighting the harder side of his output.
Initially inspired by post-punk and funk, Baxter started making music as early as 1985. By 1991 he had already released several seminal records on classic labels like Underground Resistance, KMS, and Incognito, as well as providing multiple tracks to the groundbreaking UK compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, which was many European listeners’ introduction to the genre, solidifying the term techno, and launching the international careers of many of the contributors.
1992 saw Baxter make the first trip to play Tresor, on the first UR Europe tour ever, thereby pioneering the now legendary Berlin-Detroit Connection. This visit led to a long and fruitful partnership with the club’s new-fledged label beginning with Mills', Banks' & Hood’s X-101 and Baxter’s Dream Sequence, from which the first four tracks on the new 12” come.
Whilst he would become more renowned for his signature seductive vocals and a smoother music style closer to house music, these early tracks are heavier, classic 90s techno, revealing the influence of industrial, post-punk and pop of the time. Indeed the collection is something of a time capsule: jacking 909 drums, intense, ravey synth stabs, samples from classic soul breakbeat and the Speak & Spell voice synthesizer; classic sounds and styles of the era all make appearances on the record. All tracks have been remastered by Manmade Mastering breathing a new vitality and sharpness for the modern dancefloor.
In a world where longevity is difficult and superlatives are too easily deployed, it is still difficult to overstate the long-lasting influence that Blake Baxter has had on modern music. His visionary output can be heard across modern electronic and pop to this day and with this series of remasters, there has never been a better time for the world to hear it at source.

From grisly episodic nightmares about the phuture of the planet, Dance or Die plots a dark positive route through the reinforced steel and concrete clubbing institutions of newly reunified Germany to the pre-criminalised outlaw rave movement of the early ’90s, where nosebleed sound systems reclaimed the streets, abandoned buildings and unmanned fields of Britain to party as a mode of resistance and symbol of ultimate freedom, before spiraling in exile through the warehouses and squats of Paris and Amsterdam, and the f*cking hostile wastelands of New York’s outer boroughs.
Examining the intercity axes that developed between crucible spaces and relentlessly touring DJs who sacrificed sleep and sanity for the mission; the youth subcultures that evolved in diehard tangent to the massive gabber movement in the Netherlands, and Number One’s Hardcore Warriors in North Italy; and the autonomous record distribution networks that evolved from stalls set up on the edge of London dancefloors, and from piling into vans to drive across state lines and country borders to sell enough vinyl to fill up the petrol tank, Dance or Die reveals the marrow-deep devotion that defines the global hardcore community to this day.
Riding in convoy behind the artists, promoters and fans who united across gaping sonic and social chasms in their pledge to live for the music or die, this countercultural history of hardcore navigates through the media stigmas, drug overdoses and football violence of the ’90s to the archivists and new generation who resuscitated the culture through the 2010s, whilst addressing the ideological conflict between success and selling out, and the wounding moral panics that have left permanent scars.

Undoubtedly one of the most important and influential electronic artists to have emerged in popular music, the sonic misfit from Cornwall, Aphex Twin, released a breathtaking slew of early singles and albums from 1991 onwards (and continues to present day). The first clutch of groundbreaking works came on the legendary Belgium label R&S Records and were collected on a compilation album ‘Classics’, released in 1995, and followed the global success of the timeless album ‘Selected Ambient Works 85-92’.
‘Classics’ receives a long overdue vinyl & CD re-press for 2025, with a fresh vinyl cut by acclaimed mastering engineer Beau Thomas, and a R&S Records sticker sheet inserted into the LP sleeves including cover artwork of the two singles ‘Digeridoo’ and ‘Xylem Tube’ EP which are both featured on this compilation album.
