Eddie Leader has had his most productive year since releasing his first record under the Slum Science alias in 2004. Leader has delivered music on labels like Jovonn’s Body n’ Deep, Doorly’s Reptile Dysfunction, the iconic Hard Times label and his own Hudd Traxx in the past 12 months, most recently collaborating with Chez Damier on ‘Pressure’. This record is by far the deepest of them all. ‘Lost in…’ kicks things off and takes you on a deep hypnotic journey along the house spectrum. ‘The Unknown’ has a raw and underground vibe with a heavy bass line and takes inspiration from both Chicago & Detroit. The Tribal Manifestation Mix of ‘The Unknown' picks up the tempo on the B side for a peak time dancefloor rework. Eddie closes out the EP with ‘You’, which is a smooth vocal infused early hours future classic. Hudd Traxx have also had a very productive year and there’s still more to come in 2023.

Its been some years since HARD TIMES dropped new music in our laps, but having kick started a new wave with March’s release of Steve ’Silk’ Hurley’s stunning ‘All I Need’, featuring Sara Garvey on vocal duty, the label follows up swiftly with more precision groovemanship.. this time from Hudd Traxx label boss and core HARD TIMES family member, Eddie Leader. As a DJ, producer, promoter and label boss Eddie has, over a twenty five year career, become a standard bearer for UK House Music. His own productions have graced seminal labels including Classic, Robsoul, Plastic City, Morris Audio and Balance Alliance, while his own Hudd Traxx imprint has become a go-to for many a discerning disc jockey. Its roster boasts releases that feature Matthew Herbert, Rolando, Jovonn, Rick Wade, Agnés and More. Fresh from remixing Hurley’s ‘All I Need’, Leader now looks to ’Slow Everything Down’ with four fresh jams of his own that all stay true to the Hard Times ethos of quality, deep underground sounds. Preaching from the front is ’Stand Up’, with its warm groove, piercing piano chords and soulful sermon. So come on… Stand up, to get down. On ‘Gratitude Power’ a seismic kick drum and bass combo pave the way, garnished with keys, synth stabs, bongos and a sprinkling of vocal as the track winds things on smoothly. ‘Slow Everything Down’ is where its at. A calmer, warmer groove, built from raw beats, spoken word and glistening piano. Coolness personified. This is where we're at. Leader slows and closes with final cut ’To Me To You’, icing the EP to perfection with its drowsy and hypnotising keys. HARD TIMES continue to deliver the good times.

A triumphant return for Eddie Leader and his proudly homegrown, fiercely independent imprint, Hudd Traxx. Revelling in the continuous cross pollination of dance music between the US & the UK, the label’s meticulously curated output, undeniably strong signings and creatively pertinent style has made it a go-to stable for house music lovers across the globe over its 15 year inception. Eddie’s first solo offerings for the label for five years, following on from inspired and club-ready collaborations with Chez Damier, Tomson & the Classic label. Loosing none of the dancefloor functionality championed across its previous releases, Hudd 063 enlists the vocal talents of Alexander East on lead track – “Get You Alone” – a sparkly, buoyant and amorous mid-session track that drives deep through wupp’ing pads and a direct, kick-heavy beat. And while the seductively lucid vocals of East attempt to coax you onto the mattresses, this beast refuses to leave the club, bucking hard right thru till the end. There’s a tasty ‘instrumental’ handily included in the digital package too, just in case Alexander’s vox gets you too hot under the collar… “Respect” follows, leading with an elementary but nonetheless poignant vocal refrain. With a tuff, almost New Jersey energy to it, highly advanced kinetics power this bad boy forward; the well-tested system of vintage drum boxes working overtime alongside detuned keys, space-age synth swirls and a rugged, box busting bassline. Nods to Peacefrog, Rick Wade and Glenn Underground adorn, “Drum March” – a track so shuffled to buggery you’ll be forgiven for falling over on first listen. Littered with expertly programmed shakers, woodblocks and swung snares whilst finely decorated with some exquisite lead lines and a complimenting patina of optimistic organ notes. The very essence of deep house musica –unostentatious & deeply grooving. “There’s A Time” hovers between its solid bass and drum foundations via a taut and scintillating synth array as an evocative speech is mined from recent events. A unifying message wrapped up for the dancefloor when the whole world needs it most, it’s again characterized by an unbeatable grasp of rhythm utilizing gripping, Chicago-indebted drum sequencing. Quite obviously crafted with a virtuosic yet humble hand; these rooted house cuts devoid of superfluity and languishing in pure body motion are exactly what the town crier will be ordering when the doors of our dancing establishments open once more. Feasts for the feet whilst consciously acknowledging the very corner stones of house music’s underground, embryonic beginnings. Top drawer tackle from start to finish.

While Lemelle’s ‘You Got Something Special’ may not be a record you know by name, chances are you’ve heard it on the dancefloor. This obscure 1982 boogie cut has become a favourite of in-the-know DJs, cherished for its bouncy bassline, signature 80’s synths and Cindy Mizelle’s indelible vocals that make it a funk-laden disco number. Now, two of the genre’s most esteemed editors lend their hand to this record box essential, updating it for Glitterbox dancefloors and beyond. Opening the A-Side Dr Packer brings his trademark sound to the cut, seamlessly blending his disco-tinged stylings. The original also joins Dr Packer’s mix on the A-Side. On the flip, re-work extraordinaire KON delivers his edit, maintaining the 80’s boogie vibe while making it more DJ friendly with dubbed out sections for an extended cut. Rounding off the 12” is the instrumental, providing an essential DJ tool.

It’s been a busy year for Jimpster, with his Soul Spectral and This Thing (with Rich Medina) EP’s both being amongst the best received and highest selling releases of his to date. He has also added his touch to The Sunburst Band, Soichi Terada, Feiertag, Baiana System, The Secret and Retromigration in the form of some massive remixes to boot, as well as having just released an Anthology spanning 4 vinyl. To help celebrate 25 years of Freerange and Jimpster we wanted to invite some of Jamie’s personal favourites to dig through the vaults and give their own spin on his sound. Kicking things off we have Oakland’s Space Ghost taking on One ft Casamena bring his deft, musical touch to the track complete with layers of digital synths, punchy bass and vintage drum machine groove. Next up it’s Detroit’s own Jon Dixon of Timeline and Galaxy 2 Galaxy fame. The student of Mike Banks and long-term Underground Resistance cohort turns Smile For A While into a late night, piano driven, fusion masterpiece with all that Detroit sonic trickery we know and love so much. LA duo Aaron Paar and Dave Fogg aka Teflon Dons released a slew of incredible 12’s in the mid- late 90’s before almost completely disappearing for most of the 00’s. Thankfully things are reactivated and we’re so happy to have them bring a tough, jacking, bass-heavy warehouse workout to the package. Atlanta’s Kai Alce is someone we’ve hoped to have contribute to Freerange for some time and finally it happened. Bags of smooth and soulful deepness drive Jimpster’s Inside The Loop in a classic direction with Wurli pads and Moogy solo all adding to that vintage sound. Man of the moment Kareem Ali takes the baton as he reworks Bought To Bare into a Balearic beauty worthy of playing during the most perfect sunset. If you’re a fan of Kareem Ali you’ll know the magic he brings and why he’s been hotly tipped as RA’s breakthrough artist of the month and included in Pitchfork’s best releases of 2020.
