Australia's one-man storm of tropical funk Tornado Wallace returns to Beats In Space Records with the acid-flecked two-tracker, Kangaroo Ground & Ferntree Gully. Where Desperate Pleasures, his first EP for Beats In Space, distilled post-punk and electro influences into sun kissed sub-equatorial tones, Lewie Day's new 12 secretes lysergide and sweat from deep within a zero gravity dance bunker. 'Kangaroo Ground' shares the buoyancy of its spirit animal namesake, but grinds in high-gear with a shredded 303 line and monstrous groove more akin to a possessed croc. The record's flip, 'Ferntree Gully' sheds its scaly acid skin for softer sines and sirens signalling Italo productions past and built to last. Last year Tornado Wallace touched down at the ESP Institute with his Thinking Allowed EP, a slab of wax that proved pivotal in his musical aesthetic, beautifully complimenting our catalogue. He ups the ante further with Circadia, his second 3-track EP that riffs on ESP themes whilst sophisticatedly amplifying their character. The title track lays trance-like arpeggiated vocals over thunderous tropical toms, opening up into an epic group chant. Two years on from the seductive disco deviance of his previous full length, Mystic Jungle returns to his home base Periodic Records with a two track 12” single titled “Words of Love.” Masculine and feminine vocals interplay amidst textures of dreamy dub delirium, their tones smooth, yearning and androgynous as they plead over and over... repeating “Say You Love Me” like some spell of desperate romantic magic. Splatters of tropical island percussion move through starbound synth hooks, and sparkles of stellar vapor sooth the soul as moonlit organ chords ride equatorial riddims and chunky funky FM-bass riffs while all around, saxophonics blow like a humid mediterranean breeze. And on the flip, the extended version gives plenty of space over to club-minded dubwise drum intros, freely floating vocal layers, and seriously sun-scorched guitar solos that send waves of fire ripping through the air. As is now a well-established tradition, when 7 appears in the catalogue number it is the turn of handyman Asymmetrical. The title takes its inspiration from a tag that appeared in the bathroom of the historical Knick Knack Yoda after one of the (in)usual nights, and is a leap in time, a project born from the layering of different sessions that took place between 2018 and 2020 and only sees the light of day today. 7 is also the number of inches of PVC on which this double is engraved, hosting on one side the track that gives the album its name, on whose rhythms the sound of Luigi Gargano’s saxophone echoes. On the other Estetica Della Notte, is a journey into the phenomenology of tumultuous nights in the shadow of Rome’s Dome. The covers of the 170 numbered records are embellished by Ester Reset’s photographic project, available for extended fruition in the editorial project accompanying the 30 limited edition copies.
