Luca Lozano has long been an artist whose output as both a producer and designer we've admired and after many years of seeing his records fly off the shelves here at Phonica, we're delighted to be releasing the 'Da Vinci' EP by the Klasse Wrecks boss on our main label. We'll let Lucas, the modern day renaissance man himself, take it from here:

"These four tracks were created over a few sessions while I was settling into a dank basement studio (which was new at the time and now long gone).

‘The Magnificent’ and ‘Delta Force’ were made just after I acquired an old Korg Delta synth, I spent a lot of time getting the 1970s beast to sync up with modern equipment and both tracks make use of it in various elements.

‘Eau De Dave’ is a cheeky homage to a UK producer legend, I’ve been digging into his various older productions recently and went back to a fidget sound for the fun of it.

‘Crunchy Nut’ was kind of inspired by early U.K. tech house, it was the last track confirmed on the EP and came together super quick. As usual it’s a mix of old drum machines like a modded 707 and a bunch of old samples I’ve had on my computer for a couple of decades now. I’m happy I managed to work some slap bass into a track finally…"

'Calling All Dancers' was a defining moment in the producers discography and proved an evergreen hit even a decade later, to celebrate the milestone Lozano has revisited the original and turned in 4 brand new remixed versions. Ranging from tribalistic rhythms, classic electro stomp and sleaze-ball electronica the remixes provide an updated imagining of the original for audiences both new and old. Somehow Klasse Wrecks has made it to 50 official releases, not bad for a label that wears its ignorance for others and 'the norm' proudly on its dirty sleeve. Over the years the label has released a multitude of various sounds, spanning bleep, rave, deep house, down tempo and the 50th release does well to encapsulate that free spirit and openess. Without much planning and totally by way of coincidence the responsibility lies with label co-owner Luca Lozano and its sonically a typical mixed bag as to be expected. Kicking off with restless acid stomping, the title track barges through the door...knocks over a few drinks before blossoming into a breakdown that propels the 303 deep into space and back again. On the A2, Lozano shows off his love for creaky breakbeats and DX donks on a track called 'Re-Mix'...which as far as we know isnt a remix of anything at all. The flip contains more raving beauties, 'Save Me From The Rave' might be a desperate plea but by the sounds of it he's still enjoying the madness, the producer makes an epic breakdown that might well signify the end of all Trance homages. Then the final track of the EP sounds like it could be played in a field in Glastonbury in 1993, its haunting vocal harmonies signify the sun is coming up soon and likely that we're about to start Chapter 2 of the Wrecks Wrebellion. The special edition sleeve artwork features examples of previous artwork from the last 50 records, overlaid in a typically chaotic manner by the label's designer, PLANETLUKE.COM.

Hot release alert!!! WRECKS041 is a sampler of Luca Lozano's recent 'Man of Science' album. Previously only available on compact disc the EP now puts together four of the most successful and sought-after tracks on wax. The title track, 'Man Of Science' opens with sampled words from astrophysicist and planetry scientist Neil Degrasse Tyson and hints at the overarching theme of the original album. Tracks like 'Prognosis' and 'Make Peace' show off Lozano's flair and interest in early Progressive House and Tribal Techno, with addictive grooves and unique collages of familiar but new sonic elements that hark back to dance music's history. Klasse Wrecks is proud to present Luca Lozano's 4th album, a collection of both previously unreleased and brand new material. Recorded between the years of 2015 and 2022 and in the locations of various studios in Berlin and Sheffield, 'Man Of Science' collates some of the producers most accomplished and interesting work to date. Choosing to release an album on CD in the current climate of vinyl-fetishistic domination may seem a risky move but longtime followers will know Mr. Lozano was never one to follow trends blindly and chooses to plough his own path whilst the world patiently waits in line for their turn. The title track from the album opens with sampled words from astrophysicist and planetry scientist Neil Degrasse Tyson and hints at the overarching theme of the album, in an increasingly polarised world Luca Lozano plants his flag firmly in the moondust and stands by his belief solarsystem. 'Man Of Science' opens with 'End of Line 2' a follow up to the original track released on Super Rhythm Trax in 2015. The slow stomp of breakbeats and alien rhythms stride alongside complex layers of Kawai-strings and haunting FX, resulting in a trademark styling of a Lozano track that refuses to be categorised. Elsewhere the stubborn bounce of 'Celestrial Being' fuses a House feeling with a retro rave aesthetic, culminating in a beautifully orchestrated crescendo that is sure to illuminate the moodiest of listeners. Tracks like 'Prognosis' show off Lozano's flair and interest in early Progressive House, an irresistably functional groove pair with pianos and stabs Gat Decor would proud of. The album rounds of with the bonus track 'VIP', which features a sample taken from the Spike Jonze produced documentary 'Whats Up, Fatlip? and is a perfect example of the type of track that lies hidden in one of Lozano's many forgotten hard drives. Defiantly imperfect and with a tongue firmly lodged in cheek, the track gives a glimpse into the producers relentless worth ethic and also a sneak peek into the mountain of music that possibly lies unreleased. The 10 track CD album comes complete with obi-strip and fold out poster and is limited to 500 copies.

Luca Lozano spent the 2020 lockdown sharpening his tools, using the time off from traveling and DJing to re-center and re-vise. As the pace of life slowed, so did the BPMs and the Klasse Wrecks boss sought refuge in the distraction that the studio and the creative practice can offer. 'Lozano 2.0' may sound like the producer shifting down a gear, but probably only with the goal of preserving his energy until the world is ready to spin again.

Crosstown Rebels celebrate their fifteenth year with their monumental 200th release. American DJ and producer Arthur Baker reunites with Rockers Revenge for the first time in thirty years. To complete the package, dance music heavyweights Francois K and Michael Mayer take on remix duties. On A Mission is exactly that, “a mission of love, a mission of peace”. The positive vocals hark back to those of early 90s house tracks, which created unity through music and clubbing. The rhythmic beat of the drum is determined, as percussive layers build and the vocals bleed into the synths. Francois K provides two variations of the track. His remix features more prominent drumbeats driven by a growling bassline. On his rockers dub version, Francois goes all out and dubs us into the stratosphere. Up next is the Michael Mayer remix, with a more electronic take on the original with driving synths and a whirring, throbbing bass-line. Created in 1982, Rockers Revenge was the brainchild of Arthur Baker and Donnie Calvin. Donnie provided lead vocals with Baker’s wife, Tina B, Dwight Hawkes and Adrienne Dupree Johnson on backing vocals. Their most prominent track, Walking On Sunshine, was a post-disco hit reaching #1 in the US dance charts and #4 in the UK charts.

In a bid to put York on the musical map, northern producer and DJ, Sizeup, serves up some tasty peaktime goodness with his debut on Hot Creations. Perplexer drops the listeners into an utterly obscene bassline that is guaranteed to cause uproar on the floor. This is neatly followed by the rhythmic drums of Don’t Know Disco, a track that is altogether darker than its title would suggest. Last up, Derober is driving with an insatiable groove and an energising bounce. Sizeup, the alias of Jamie Burley, has had a passion for electronic music from a young age, hauling a bag of vinyl to his school discos with choice wax from legendary producers including Frankie Knuckles, Kevin Saunderson and Todd Terry. This passion continues to burn within him right through to the present day via his insatiable appetite to create records that will stir up dance floors across the globe.

TOTAL turns 21 this year, and Kompakt’s venerable compilation series couldn’t have asked for a more auspicious coming-of-age collection. If TOTAL 20 was consolidation against the odds, the Kompakt crew producing for a dreamt-of dancefloor in an uncertain future, then TOTAL 21 feels abuzz and alive with possibilities. Significantly, it’s the first TOTAL in some time that’s streamlined down to a single disc; this makes TOTAL 21 even punchier than usual, a joyous, reflective, and always thrilling 75-minute audio scan of the world according to Kompakt.

As with every instalment of TOTAL, there’s a deft balancing here of Kompakt regulars and new blood. Of the latter, there’s a first appearance by KOLLMORGEN, remixed by PATRICE BÄUMEL into an astral torch song; Amsterdam’s NICKY ELISABETH, offering up ROMAN FLÜGEL’s pulsating, arpeggiated remix of “Celeste”; and CAPTAIN MUSTACHE swoops down into view, PLAY PAUL in tow, with the dream-like electro lift-off that is “Everything”. JONATHAN KASPAR also drops by with a new track, “Von Draussen”, a stealthy and lethal floor-hugger with prowling bass.

Elsewhere, there’s the lead track to MICHAEL MAYER’s astonishing recent EP, “Brainwave Technology”, which not-so-gently spears the tech-futurist babble of AI, transhumanism and posthumanism, soundtracked by one of Mayer’s typically lush, glimmering soundscapes. JOHN TEJADA reaches back to the heyday of glitch and dub techno with the gorgeous “Spectral Progressions”, while the brothers VOIGT & VOIGT, on “Nicht Mein Job”, seem reinvigorated by the interwoven patterns and funky minimalism of the Profan days. Not to be outdone, JÜRGEN PAAPE kicks TOTAL 21 with “La Guittara Romantica”, a chiming and lilting lullaby for woozy late-night reflection.

Throughout, it feels as though Kompakt are taking a moment to both breathe in the dust of the past and look forward to a bright future. Perhaps that’s why, on “Fasson”, SASCHA FUNKE seems so confident, with pinprick melodies bouncing around a hall of audio mirrors, or why THE BIONAUT returns with “Blue Sky Motor Lodge”, a song so moistly melancholy, so enduringly lovely, it’ll make you weep tears of joy. ROBAG WRUHME gets a little delirious on the ticking, twisting “No”, and then GUI BORATTO mops everything up with the bubbling, bumping glam-stomp “Wake Up”.

That’s not all – spring for the digital and/or vinyl edition and you’ll get a new cut, “Happy”, from MICHAEL MAYER, and MARC ROMBOY & C.A.R.’s “I Am A Dancer”. But however you choose to play it, now TOTAL’s turned 21, it’s your duty to throw it the celebration to end all celebrations. Let the party begin, and don’t forget to bring a party favor…
TOTAL wird dieses Jahr 21 Jahre alt, und KOMPAKTs ehrwürdige Compilation-Reihe hätte sich keine vielversprechendere Coming-of-Age-Sammlung wünschen können. Wenn TOTAL 20 eine Selbstvergewisserung gegen alle Widrigkeiten war, bei der die KOMPAKT-Crew für einen herbei geträumten Dancefloor, der noch in einer ungewissen Zukunft lag, produzierte, dann fühlt sich TOTAL 21 nun wie eine sehr lebendige Sammlung von neuen Möglichkeiten an. Bezeichnenderweise ist es das erste Mal seit einiger Zeit, dass eine TOTAL auf eine einzige Compact Disc passt; das macht TOTAL 21 noch druckvoller als sonst, ein fröhlicher, reflektierender und stets aufregender 75-minütiger Audio-Scan der Welt, betrachtet durch die KOMPAKT-Brille.

Wie bei jeder Ausgabe von TOTAL gibt es auch dieses Jahr eine ausgewogene Mischung zwischen Kompakt-Stammgästen und frischem Blut zu erleben. Aus der zweiten Kategorie gibt es einen ersten Auftritt von KOLLMORGEN, aus dessen “You Are The” PATRICE BÄUMEL per Remix ein sentimentales Liebeslied gemacht hat; NICKY ELISABETHs "Celeste" hören wir im mitreißenden Remix von Roman Flügel; und CAPTAIN MUSTACHE debütiert mit dem träumerischen Elektro-Überflieger "Everything" mit PLAY PAUL im Schlepptau. Schließlich steuert auch JONATHAN KASPAR einen neuen Track bei: "Von Draussen" mit seinem unwiderstehlichen Basslauf ist das was man unter DJs eine “Secret Weapon” nennt.

Weiter geht’s mit dem Titeltrack von MICHAEL MAYERs erstaunlicher aktueller EP, "Brainwave Technology", auf der er das Tech-Futuristen-Geplapper von KI, Transhumanismus und Posthumanismus auf die Hörner nimmt, untermalt von Mayer- typischen, glitzernden Sounds. JOHN TEJADA erinnert mit dem wunderschönen "Spectral Progressions" an die Blütezeit von Glitch und Dub-Techno, während VOIGT & VOIGT auf "Nicht Mein Job" von den ineinander verwobenen Mustern und dem funky Minimalismus der frühen Profan-Tage wiederbelebt scheinen. JÜRGEN PAAPE steht dem in nichts nach und eröffnet TOTAL 21 mit "La Guitarra Romantica", einem klingenden Wiegenlied zum Nachdenken zu später Stunde.

Man hat das Gefühl, dass Kompakt einen Moment innehält, um sowohl den Staub der Vergangenheit einzuatmen, als auch in eine strahlende Zukunft zu blicken. Vielleicht ist das der Grund, warum SASCHA FUNKE auf "Fasson" so selbstbewusst wirkt, mit messerscharfen Melodien, die wie Echos in einem Spiegelsaal herumhüpfen, oder die Art und Weise wie THE BIONAUT mit "Blue Sky Motor Lodge" zurückkehrt, einem Song, der so melancholisch, so unglaublich schön ist, dass er uns Tränen der Freude weinen lässt. ROBAG WRUHME gerät im tickenden, sich drehenden "No" ein wenig ins Taumeln, und dann macht GUI BORATTO mit dem blubbernden, stampfenden Glam-Stampfer "Wake Up" den Deckel drauf.
