Fellow Native New Yorker’s Odyssey & John Morales collaborate once more and for Ism Records it’s a dream combination. ‘Weekend’ the Leroy Burgess & James Calloway disco anthem reworked by Odyssey & Yam Who? from the bands brand new forthcoming album. Ultra hot for the summer, all the remixes commissioned here are by some of most established in the industry. John Morales & Sergio Munzibai one of most prolific production teams to come out of New York of all time, and from the late 70’s onwards were constantly in demand on both sides of the atlantic. Back in the limelight since re-releasing the M + M compilations for BBE over the past couple of years, we’ve gone full circle again as M + M remixed many of the biggest Odyssey hits from back in day including Native New Yorker, Use It Up & Wear It Out, Going Back To My Roots & Inside Out. Ism Records hooked up with Morales in 2011 and starting discussing working on production for the band. This version of ‘Weekend’ is balanced in tempo and styles, very close to the Patrick Adams Phreek version whilst also touching on the Arthur Baker’s Class Action remake from 1983. One of the scenes most talented producers and one of Ism’s favourite remixers Ashley Beedle turns up the pressure with his second remix for Odyssey in the form of his ‘Big Apple Uptown Story’ series. Slightly tougher and more electronic than the M + M remixes but instantly a dancefloor smash, this has been getting road tested and tweaked for the best part of 2012 and is quite literally the sound of ‘heavy disco’. A name familiar to all the heads who were at the forefront of the mid 90’s London ‘Nu Disco’ scene is Crispin J Glover. Crispin always hanging out at all the recent the Ism parties asked for the parts for ‘Inside Out’ and of course we had to oblige. The track which has been already remixed by a list of producers from 2011 but little did we know what was to be submitted. Another big remix package from ISM, who continue their homage paying endeavours for legendary NYC disco troupe Odyssey. This latest 12” sees remixes from Faze Action, Toby Tobias, Leftside Wobble and Ron Basejam. Opening proceedings on the A-Side you’ll find Faze Action’s thumping proto-house version of “Going Back To My Roots” - this one is made for sweat-drenched Sunday nights at Horse Meat Disco! Mr Tobias goes deep on his version of “O DJ KO”, with the swampy bass, echo laden vocal cuts and bleep-fuelled melody a pleasing contrast to its raucous predecessor. The two remixes on the flip maintain these lofty standards, with Soundcloud don Leftside Wobble turning in a twinkling refix of “Lonely Star”, while Crazy P man Ron Basejam turns “Ain’t No Dubbin’ Us Now” into a beefy, conga-led traipse through shimmering, Balearic soundscapes. Originally released in 1976 on Philly Groove, the track was picked up by Warner Bros in the U.S. and they quickly issued a now sought after promo 12” with “First Choice Theme”, “Ain’t He Bad” & “Let Us Entertain You”.

On this fresh, limited edition yellow vinyl 7” Simpson works the track with his talents using the skills he learned by working beside legends like Tom Moulton and Vince Montana to strip the track down and let the fabulous rhythm section shine through. Giving breaks where needed but keeping the track dancer friendly and only using the best parts for this 7” mix.

Modern day Disco Remix king Mike Maurro strikes again! This time, Atlantic Records and Brookside team up and have Mike tackling two classic tracks by The Trammps: “Hooked For Life” & “Soul Searching’ Time”. “Hooked For Life” was released on Atlantic’s “Exclusive Disco Series” of promo only 12”s in the U.S. back in 1975 and “Soul Searchin’ Time” was also released as a promo only 12” in the U.K. on WEA’s ultra rare “Disco Special Cut” series. Both tracks get the “Maurro Remix” treatment with extended intro’s, instrumental passes and breakdowns, and finally mastered in Philadelphia by Mike Tarsia of the world famous Sigma Sound Studios. Massive mix alert! "It's party time tonight!" - NYC Mix maestro Mike Maurro has turned in a storming, 14+ minute version of Patrick Adams' classic "Weekend" by Phreek, a true blue club classic from 1978 (Later covered by Class Action, sampled by Todd Terry etc) "Weekend" was an absolutely huge Paradise Garage staple getting unlimited spins from Larry Levan during the club's lifespan, the definition of a "Garage" record indeed. Maurro's new mix rearranges and deconstructs the original version with so much style, respect and feeling, using unheard synth vamps, string sections, percussions and breakdowns pushing it into a whole new direction while retaining the feel of the original mix. The track is already electric in it's original form but here Mike Maurro pushes the energy levels right through the roof, birthing a fresh new mix of a stone cold classic!
On the B-side we have the low slung funk of The New Birth's killer "Deeper", released in '77 as a single on promo 12" this cut gets the MM mix treatment, with the intro extended and the drums brought fully upfront in the mix Mike has teased out all the best parts of the original arrangement while managing to stamp his always unique style on this new version. This midtempo groover is pure Soul all the way, one for the serious dancers that keeps rolling itself along into one of the most solid, funkiest grooves ever! Another pair of underground Disco dance classics get treated to the MM reworking magic! Both these edits are exclusive to this 12" and have never before been released in any format!! Detroit natives The Jones Girls have long been loved for their musical output, during their long and successful career they've released a slew of well known and classic material since the early 1970's and have worked with a host of legendary artists including Leon Haywood, Lamont Dozier, Curtis Mayfield, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and many many more. NYC's edit king Mike Maurro may not have been around as long as them but he has skilfully woven his magic with 2 of the girls' biggest club jams, gently reworking from the master tapes respectfully he's delivered 2 stunning edits of "Dance turned into a romance" and "Nights over Egypt".
"Dance turned into a romance" on the a-side was originally released on Philadelphia International in 1980 and is a bonafide slow burner, Mike has the crisp drum break upfront in the mix, making it perfectly mixable and setting the tone for the deep bass guitar licks to creep in. This wonderful rearrangement suddenly gives way to the slick piano, guitar and of course, those Philly strings! Originally written and produced by the legendary Gamble and Huff team this is classy stuff. Beautifully edited here by MM, retaining the feel of the original composition yet adding a welcome 2016 twist! "Nights over Egypt" - a true blue club classic, takes up the b-side! This one should need no intro, another solid piece of gold from the Philly International archives from 1981. This time the girls team up with Philly genius Dexter Wansel for a smoothed out slice of Disco dripping with sophisticated Jazz sensibilities. Here, Mike uses what sounds like some alternative takes from the studio session and succeeds in rearranging an all time classic jam with class! We are treated to a nice long instrumental intro with flourishes of Rhodes, strings and super tight, snapping drums with the vocals coming in almost 3 minutes into the track! Absolutely essential stuff here, another Mike Maurro master mix sureshot! More

Hailing from Florida, the Brookside imprint have dug deep into the master tapes and let NYC master-mixer Mike Maurro loose on a couple of stone cold classics! Maurro, a Queens based DJ and mixer since 1986 has become one of the top remixers out there today with his own, faithful takes on numerous dance classics from the last 30+ years. Here he lends his magic touch to a pair of well loved club classics while adding his own original flavour. Dan Hartman's "Vertigo/Relight My Fire" is up first on side-A, featuring the unmistakable vocals of NYC diva Loleatta Holloway. Maurro's mix brings the vocals in earlier, dubbing them out creating a super trippy atmosphere with a slightly different musical arrangement over the course of almost 14 minutes! On side-B, we have the legendary Evelyn "Champagne" King's "Shame", with a slightly longer, beat led intro for the DJ's. BrookSide Records announces the 12” vinyl release of the brand new Ashley Beedle remix of the “legendary” Gloria Gaynor’s recording, “Love Is Just A Heartbeat Away”. The original recording was produced and written by music veterans Reid Whitelaw and Norman Bergen. Gloria Gaynor is most well known for her “anthem” recording, “I Will Survive”, as well as her “classic” medley’s, and many, many other memorable recordings.
The new vinyl 12” is a double “A” side release, as it is coupled with the Heaven ‘n Hell Orchestra’s instrumental version of ‘Heartbeat”, also remixed by Ashley Beedle. Both the Gloria Gaynor and Heaven ‘n Hell recordings are timed at 7:12. Coincidentally, another Whitelaw & Bergen produced and written track, “Whatcha Gonna Do”, is a rework by, and included in Ashley Beedle’s Re-Edits CD album, “Message In The Music”, recently released on Harmless (Demon).
