Founded in 1988, the Nu Groove catalogue is a true reflection of New York’s house sound. Started by Frank and Karen Mendez as an outlet for some of Rheji and Ronald Burrell’s more experimental musical ventures, the label would go on to help launch the careers of a number of local talents including Joey Beltram and Kenny Dope, but the Burrell brothers were by far the most prolific. Over thirty years later, Luke Solomon has re-assembled the catalogue and the spirit of this legendary New York label, with this 2 x 12” package celebrating some essentials from its catalogue. The second volume features cuts from Bäs Noir, Emjay, Tech Trax Inc and Metro, this collection of late 80’s and early 90’s gems is a record box essential and blissful re-introduction to the Nu Groove sound.

Stefan Braatz - One More Dream
Berlin underground authority Stefan Braatz returns to Nu Groove with a four-track EP showcasing his timeless sound – Outlaw. An established club DJ and producer who has donned many hats in his 30-year career, Stefan Braatz is known for his expansive knowledge that defies genre convention, with his previous Nu Groove collaboration ‘Everyman Jack’ featuring Chicago legends Virgo Four combining his respect for the old school with new school techniques. Opening the EP is the eponymous track ‘Outlaw’, featuring vocals from Chicago house pioneer Harry Dennis – a contemporary of Ron Hardy, the late Frankie Knuckles and a member of Jungle Wonz alongside Marshall Jefferson. As Braatz’s relentless synth energy powers through, Dennis’s unmistakeable free flow guides the composition with ease. What follows are three solo tracks that summarise the Berlin expert’s opposition to the genre restraints; ‘Conversation’ opens a dialogue between synth strings and piano that loops in ecstasy, while ‘Dingy Thoughts’ and ‘One More Dream’ are darker club cuts that bubble with intensity in the lower registers.

There's a reason that Future Sound of London's 1991 debut single, 'Papua New Guinea', is periodically reissued: it's a stone-cold classic that sounds unlike anything else. In its original mix form, the track combines traits borrowed from early breakbeat hardcore (booming bass, house-tempo breakbeats) with saucer-eyed vocal samples, twinkling pianos and sounds more often found in ambient house and chill-out tunes from the period. This remastered, hand-numbered vinyl reissue boasts all of the 1992 remixes (as well as the original mix), including a suitably psychedelic, tribal-tinged Andrew Weatherall revision, the duo's own spaced-out ambient style 'Dub' mix, and a sax-sporting Manchester re-wire courtesy of 808 State's Graham Massey.

Release Info:
It’s Italian time! Sam Ruffillo is back. Sicilian producer doing smooth Balearic disco with Italian vocals. The direction is clear: Sam Ruffillo's music brings us back into the Italian riviera and the hippy days of Ibiza in the late 1970ies. Even his way of production is similar to how the early days disco producers in Italia used to work: No samples needed. Instead a few guest musicians come to jam over Sam's beats in his Italian studio space. Guitar, bass, percussions. Sam later makes the production and added keyboard solos and put together the vibes into what is this new EP.
The girl voice comes from NINFA. It’s the classic studio story: Ninfa is a singer and DJ and friend of Sam. She was hanging at the studio while Sam was finishing these tracks. She stated to sing along... the words came up spontaneously… so they decided to record her and finally decided to keep them. The vibe was too good. Why talk English if u can do it better: in Italian! :)
This is second for Toy Tonics after his Sport House EP from last year. Sam also appeared on the solo record of Joel Holmes on Toy Tonics. Together with Kapote Modica he co-produced and made the beats on that record. Now Sam is back with this pure Italian EP. Inclusive remixes by new German artists Gome and Italian Musemeci - known to many from his fabulous Italo-trance releases on Diynamic records.

Featuring cuts from Bäs Noir, Aphrodisiac, N.Y. House’n Authority and K.A.T.O plus remixes from Tommy Musto and Frankie Bones, this collection of late 80’s and early 90’s gems is a record box essential and blissful re-introduction to the Nu Groove sound. The classic "Song Of The Siren" is yet another sublime piece of deepest NYC house music from the legendary Ronald Burrell under his Aphrodisiac alias. A stone cold Nu-Groove classic from 1990, this record has always been a firm favourite with discerning House heads & those in search of a more sublime groove. Here, re-mastered & re-issued in it's original form, "Song Of The Siren" is a must have piece. A mysterious, melodic journey that transcends time, sounds fresh & works perfectly no matter how late or how early it is on the dance-floor.

Nu Groove spotlights the artists that made the legendary NYC label a firm favourite of crate diggers then and now with a series of their vital tracks re-edited by leading industry figures and choice selectors of today.
‘Nu Groove Edits, Vol. 1’ celebrates the champion of that quintessential New York house sound, Rheji Burrell. Together with his twin Rhano, the Burrell brothers were instrumental in defining the sound of Nu Groove, often releasing under a slew of monikers, four of which appear here.
First up, the underground pioneer Bruise aka Christian Campbell takes on Burrell’s ‘Secret Code’ released under his Jazz Documents moniker. Anonymous Berlin duo Acid Jerks edit the deep house classic ‘Tech Trax Inc.’ by the eponymous pseudonym.
What follows is house purist Phil Weeks’ rework of Houz’ Neegroz ‘All Night Long’ featuring vocals from Quiana. Rounding out this eclectic collection of edits, the unstoppable production duo Honey Dijon & Luke Solomon take on the legendary track ‘APT. 2A’ that Burrell released as N.Y. House’n Authority. More

The Utopia Project, yet another one of many pseudonyms for legendary producer Rheji Burrell of Burrell brothers fame. All 4 of the "Files" contained within this EP bear the classic hallmarks and sounds of the Burrell brothers signature style; taut drum programming, deep, melodic synth washes, bass-lines from the darkest recesses of NYC's streets and dance-floors and an instantly recognizable atmosphere. Like much of the brothers output these tracks are designed to be heard either very, very late at night or in the early hours of the morning and are some of the defining sounds of New York's underground night-clubs in the formative parts of the 1990's. A true underground House record, over 20+ years old and still sounding as fresh and current as ever, "File 1" is now available again for 2015, re-mastered and re-pressed with the permission of and in conjunction with the Burrell brothers / Nu-Groove Records, New York City.

Tracklist:
(1) Raxon – Robotalia (DE-Q20-23-00013)

Release Info:
Next up is an overdue reunion with a familiar face. After his outstanding contribution to Cocoon Compilation S and his first solo EP on Cocoon Recordings, Raxon is back with a more than equally fascinating sound. The Egyptian-born and now Barcelona-based artist is back on it again, delivering two tracks that will take you on a journey through the depths of robotic soundscapes.
Intricate beats, hypnotic synthesizer melodies, deep bassline grooves, and distinctive EFX sounds create Raxon’s very special signature sound.
Straight drum programming paired with chirping percussions takes us away to embark on a travel through space and time while distinctive claps poke through a futuristic nebula of floating and shifting sequences. The twisted melody of “Robotalia” carries us to a parallel dimension of machine sound and if you listen closely, you can hear the robots’ screwing and sawing. Warping bleeps and mechanical effects complete the robotic feeling. Raxon’s understanding of structures and architectural abilities are reflected through the arrangement, slowly increasing to ecstasy.
“Kryptonite” scores with alien soundscapes. Stuttering vocals are the questions, while futuristic and dramatic chord stabs are the direct answer. A straight, radiant sound appears as an electronic trombone from outer space, offensively supporting the driving bassline. The symbiotic interplay between the euphoric synthesizer hook line and the relentless beat with pushing sharp hi-hats visualize powerful images in one's mind's eye. Suddenly the beat stagnates and results in a morphing break going head over heels developing a start-stop pitch effect that not only builds up tremendous tension but also bears an increased risk of melting your brain. We just love tape delay!

Info:
Bucharest's own Khidja have been an active part in the local nightclub scene over the past years. After first appearing as co-compilers of the Romanian Jazz LP for Sonar Kollektiv, it was finally a remix for Baris K on [Emotional] Especial in late 2013 which put the duo on the want list of many tasteful DJs around the world. The time was just perfect to appear with oriental soundscapes having been the most sought-after spice in dance music during that summer period. Two original EPs on Especial and Forgotten Corner popped up in spring 2014 and gave evidence that Khidja scheduled themselves to be around for the long term. Looki stands out to be the perfect Balearic aftermath to Telephones' previous release on Love On The Rocks. Pursuing the transcendent motive from sunrise to sunset, it is far away from the arabesque melodies of their previous productions. Khidja speak their hearts to the sound of the Neo-New-Age generation - no beat, no stress, just a guitar, the beach and the sea. To accompany are three remixes to catch any imagination. Godfather of the MDMA-infected sound synthesis, Lauer needs no further introduction, epic as ever, the perfect take, moving the track from chill out to dance floor with uplifting grace. Australian newcomer Fantastic Man is next, dropping the guitar for good and kicks in with a polyrhythmic tribal rhythm for a dance floor friendly mood. Closing the EP are the one and only Africaine 808, who bubble up the original with a cascade of reverbs and delays, embedded in a reduced yet complex dub beat, constantly raising desperate demands for that unattainable peak moment.
Available on four track EP and digitally.

DJ Koze - Pick Up (12" Extended Disco Version)
2
DJ Koze - The Love Truck
2023 repress
Tracklist
A. Pick Up (12" Extended Disco Version)
B. The Love Truck
DJ Koze might be one of the world's best producers, but above all he's a DJ, and it's his DJ ear that governs. Just as in a great set, so with his releases: "Seeing Aliens" came out of nowhere, a big buzzing beast of a track, to announce that Koze was back on the scene and prime everyone for the coming album, knock knock. But now that Koze has your attention, it's time to remind everyone what's most important about club music, pull things back, take a turn to the left, and get deep into the groove.
Thus "Pick Up": the second single from knock knock is 100% pure groove, doubly so in the extended 12" version. In a sense it's incredibly familiar - it is essentially a filter disco record, very close to something you could imagine coming out of Paris around the turn of the millennium. But of course, this is Koze. Nothing is normal or familiar in his world, and he's taken this most foundational of clubland staples into new territory. Flipping samples of Gladys Knight & the Pips "Neither One Of Us (Wants to Be the First to Say Goodbye)" and Melba Moore's "Pick Me Up, I'll Dance", it creates something completely airborne, shot through with emotions such as gods must feel: not quite explicable to the human mind but strong enough to knock you off your feet. In its way it's absolutely as powerful as "Seeing Aliens", but it comes in like the proverbial iron fist in a glove of velvet.
The flip, a ten-minute new track, "The Love Truck" is a big contrast again. If "Pick Up" is giddy flight, "The Love Truck" is woozy floating. Its sharp, clicking percussion recalls 2000s minimal techno, but this time absolutely nothing is generic. The long, intense, on-and-off bass tones, the flickers of birdsong, the pure voices slipping in backwards as if from the future... it's all like the most blissful dream, and culminates in a coda so subtle yet so beautiful it's like ever time you've ever seen the sun rise and thought "I never want this to end", all the while understanding deep down that the fleeting nature of the pleasure is also what give it its power. But of course, being created with that consummate DJ's ear, it's also full of the thrill of wondering what Koze has in store next.
