max loderbauer - Noontide (Max Loderbauer Remix)
Max Loderbauer, who has so far made consistently engaging contributions to the Arjunamusic family, is back to lend his unique interpretive skills to the master recordings for the Brightbird album by João Paulo Esteves da Silva, Mário Franco and Samuel Rohrer. Loderbauer has set himself up for a chal- lenge, since the original album’s completely improvised flow of small-ensemble, conversational jazz feels complete enough without outside intervention. However, Loderbauer’s role as electronics operator in the similarly attuned Ambiq trio has already shown that, through his mastery of tone color, he has a talent for teasing out the additional hidden details within an apparently ‘complete’ sonic environment. It’s a task he mana- ges to accomplish without ever overriding or contradicting the cohesive message provided by his collaborators.

SHORT INFO:
Tobias Freund, the Berlin based producer, musician, and label owner of Non Standard Productions has created
an incredible cover record that pays tribute to some of the most iconic and influential artists of the past four
decades.
The album Tobias. & Friends - TOP TEN places a unique spin on the original tracks, with its combination of
electronic sounds and vocal performances from Javiera González, Barbie Williams, Cormac McAdam, Carlos
Cabezas, and Stian Westerhus.
Having already worked with Javiera González on the recent post punk album release “The Mutual Torture -
Don’t” (NSP 19), Tobias has once again used his talents to honour some of his favourite bands.
Each track has been carefully re-produced at Non Standard Studios in Berlin, resulting in a perfectly balanced
mix of old and new.
Highlights from the record include “Used To” by Wire, “All We Ever Wanted” by Bauhaus, and “Gut Feeling/Slap
Your Mammy” by DEVO.
The tracks range from the upbeat, 80s-inspired “Pure Jam” by YMO to the more sombre “My Sex” by Ultravox.
Tobias has given us a thoughtful, creative, and enjoyable record that is sure to please any fan of these bands.
All in all, this is an exceptional release, a masterful blend of past and present, and a perfect tribute to some of the
greatest musical acts of our time.

SHORT INFO:
The Mutual Torture pay homage to many of their music heroes from the early 80es. Consequently, their modus operandi is deeply rooted in Post Punk paranoia, alien soundtracks, improvisation, and simulation. Their outcome is coolness that's glowing cold under the red sun, structure and order, and 12 transcendental messages. In the end, there are no more heroes left but just The Mutual Torture.
This band of non-standard humans appears with a conceptual approach to transforming the energy and the boldness of a genre which is known for its pioneering spirit, overwhelming playfulness and a strong desire to experiment. The Mutual Torture are soulmates of those who formed this genre: a German-Chilean band with an attitude and a plan to tour their album live. In particular: Tobias Freund (drum computers and electronics), André Schöne (bass), and Javiera González (vibrantly morphing vocals).

Short Info:
In 1985, I started working as a sound engineer in the famed Far Studios of German hit producer legend Frank Farian in Rosbach near Frankfurt, and there had an array of gear at my disposal that not many producers could afford, and know how to use in consequence. In the center a high-end Neve studio desk, but also the finest machines created by mythic brands like Linn, Kurzweil, Publison, or Quantec. Confronted with this considerable amount of opportunities on a daily basis, I soon decided to use what I was surrounded with for my own musical ideas, and started experimenting with it in my spare time. My perception of sounds quickly surpassed what I had known before. The equipment offered me many possibilities to position sounds within a song and I learnt how to compose by filling up all the places in between the speakers. There was not only left and right but near and far as well, and even up and down. My preferred perspective grew to be that of standing in front of the speakers, "looking down" on a song from a slightly higher position. The material was recorded on analogue reel-to-reel audiotape, which I subsequently edited and deconstructed manually with a razor blade, an edit block and a roll of audio splicing tape.

Music by:
Max Loderbauer & Tobias Freund, Recorded at Non Standard Studios, Berlin 2014-2017
Short Info:
A decade has passed since Tobias Freund and Max Loderbauer aka Non Standard Institute (NSI) released their enigmatic collection of 'non-standards'. Playing with mystery is the name of the game here as well. The new CD, entitled with the code '5863', is the result of collecting creative moments over years and stringing together twenty short pieces that jointly amount to almost an hour of playtime. Meditative, reflective, introspective, but also occasionally exhilarated... All these descriptions come to mind. But there's more to the story line which emerges in patient increments as the album unfolds. Music comes mostly in the form of sparse but evocative piano improvisations, layering personal expression and subtle references anchored within the depth of the musicians' experience. As the cryptic title suggests, the scope of examined experience can be symbolized through dates or years. But what counts for much more here is the sonic narrative itself with all its openness to interpretation. Some of these concise tracks can swiftly transport the listener to iconic harmonies of other musical contexts as they seamlessly relink the piano avant-gardism of Erik Satie with echoes of modern psychedelia and futuristic soundtracks. As a whole, however, the minimal instrumentalism of NSI is as much about the notes and emotions that punctuate the electronic soundscapes generated by Tobias' unerring use of studio as it is about the space created between them. This method brings to mind the Japanese concept of Ma which emphasizes the fundamental meaning of interval or space for any structure. It is the in-between that matters. The non-being. The non-standard.

Short Info:
Recent Arts is a duo formed by Chilean visual artist Valentina Berthelon and German musician
Tobias Freund. Together they present live audio-visual shows ranging from experimental improvisations to works that are more aligned with the global electronic music club scene.
Recent Arts manipulate sound and image in real time during their stage shows. The music is created and performed by means of an application based on Max/MSP. This application has been developed by Max Loderbauer and Tom Thiel, and finalized based on ideas by Tobias Freund. It is a "Loop Based Computer Controlled Engine" that repeats and processes sounds in a free and natural way - which feels like listening to the flowing water of a creek, or to the sound of the wind. Repetitions are constantly being modulated, no patterns are the same. In addition, the musical structure is combined with a full range of analog synthesis to achieve a wide spectrum of frequencies.

max loderbauer & jacek sienkiewicz - B Himalaya
Berlin Atonal Recordings is happy to announce two forthcoming releases, both featuring live cuts from two of the most talked about performances at the 2015 edition of the festival. Synthesiser genius Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric, Vilod, Moritz von Oswald Trio) and techno experimentalist Jacek Sienkiewicz (Recognition) combined for a stunning live show on the opening night of festival 2015. Blending harmonic drones and almost unrecognizably distended vocal samples with adroitly weighted melodic passages, this collaboration was a masterclass in expertly crafted ambient music from two of the genres' leading exponents. Two passages from this set have been mastered and cut to vinyl in a special 12" with artwork by Pedro Maia based on his visuals for the show.

Bill Withers & Studio Rio - Lovely Day (Studio Rio Instrumental Version)
Repress soon!
As mood changers go, this track is up there with the best. Last year whilst DJing with miche at Shapes festival in the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland, a breathtaking yet ominous Alpine sky suddenly became a picture postcard moment. The clouds parted and a double rainbow formed, as miche dropped Studio Rio's bossa nova remake of Bill Withers’ all-time classic 'Lovely Day'. From there, the dancefloor shifted gears and morphed into full-swing feel-good vibes, in a beautiful, spontaneous moment nobody could have planned for.
Mr Bongo now proudly presents a reissue of this brilliant, bossa-channelling Bill Withers reinterpretation from Studio Rio’s 2014 release ‘The Brazil Connection’. Masterminded by the German, Grammy award-winning Berman Brothers, the project was born out of their deep love of Brazilian music. “Our goal was to bring the Brazilian joie de vivre to iconic performances by well-known artists. What would these classic songs sound like had they been recorded in the studios of Rio de Janeiro in the first place, with the best Brazilian musicians and arrangers?” the brothers reflect.
Capturing the life force of Brazil, the beating heart that is its music, they set out to find the musicians who would fit best with their concept. Landing in Rio in 2013 a series of coincidences led to them being introduced to their idols Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal, who both agreed to come on board. The Berman Brothers also wanted to find some of the musicians who recorded with one of Brazil’s most influential composers Tom Jobim. “Fifty years after Jobim made the music that really defines bossa nova, we found that many of his sidemen were still active, including Paulo Braga of Jobim’s famed rhythm section. It was magic; everything just fell into place.”
There's no question that the original of ‘Lovely Day’ is up there as one of the most feel-good, spirit-lifting anthems of all time. Here the brothers, with the help of a whole host of Brazil’s finest musicians, rework Bill’s soul-fuelled groove into a bossa nova slice of sunshine. With the blessing of Bill and Sony, they were given access to the original multitracks so they could incorporate Bill’s vocals perfectly into the new arrangement.
Joy-injected horns and bouncing double bass blend with the smile-inducing samba flavour of Pretinho da Serrinha’s cavaquinho playing. Tying it all together Torcuato Marinao who worked with the likes of Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, completes the line-up as arranger of the songs.
The perfect end-of-the-night track, mood lifter or soul warmer, remakes don’t get much better than this. More

S E L E K T ? S E L E K T is the name of the new Bureau B sublabel
S E L E K T is the 12" platform for experiments by musicians on the label or other artists
S E L E K T offers space for collaborations and remixes. No borders
The protagonists:
Automat: Berlin music collective comprising Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut), Achim Färber (Project Pitchfork, Prag) and Georg Zeitblom (Sovetskoe Foto). Their debut album appeared in April 2014 on Bureau B.
Max Loderbauer: Berlin musician, producer and sonic architect on ambient, IDM and minimal techno terrain. One half of the Sun Electric duo in the 1990s, later a member of the Moritz von Oswald Trio, various collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos.
The outcome: dark, hypnotic, experimental electro dub/IDM
Andreas Reihse (Kreidler) on Automat & Max Loderbauer:
Muffled hammering grows rhythmical. An uncarpeted snare joins in, clicks and clacks, babbling, racing from left to right around your head, out the back and in through the front again, a beat, a beat drives forward, forward through jungle, tunnels, pushing on and on, Tempelhof, down the corridor, knocking, knock knock, doors open, everyone in. Doors close. A cigarette. Menthol. Hangs in the air. Screws the spring into the metal. Sacral. Sharpens. Sharpens. The sound gets dirtier. Breaks off. Breathe. Another cigarette. Menthol. Feedback fills the room and on it goes.
Automat and Max Loderbauer open proceedings on the new SELEKT label quite masterfully with an auspicious 4 track EP - Verstärker / Hall / Kompressor / Echo. How did this come about? Automat, busy recording their second album, came across Max Loderbauer in the neighbouring studio. They got along swimmingly and started working together straight away. "Everything played live, no overdubs" as Automat's bass player Georg Zeitblom confirms - first take, no shake. The studio was stripped down to basics. No computers though: a tape machine, guitar amplifier, analogue EQs, rehearsal space: "Re-rewind, the crowd say Bo Selekter!"

max loderbauer & jacek sienkiewicz - east ridge
2
max loderbauer & jacek sienkiewicz - west ridge
Tracklist :
A: West Ridge B: East Ridge
Info:
Valleys, ravines, crags, inaccessible mountain peaks, abyss. Since times immemorial, stark mountain landscape has always been humankind's inspiration and a constant reference point for many generations of exploratory artists. "Ridges" is a result of a creative encounter between veteran of improvised avant-electronics Max Loderbauer (among others, co-creator of Sun Electric, member of Moritz von Oswald Trio, and frequent collaborator of Ricardo Villalobos) and spiritus movens of Warsaw-based label Recognition Jacek Sienkiewicz. Meeting takes place not only on the level of investigating pure sound and building complex structures, but also on the level of fascination with mountainside aura and mystique that is common to both artists: Alps (Loderbauer) and Tatra (Sienkiewicz), as well as with the vocal cultures of communities inhabiting theese areas. Deeply introspective and individualistic confrontation
between two peer sensibilities and imaginative worlds gave birth to two separate compositions in the vein of contemplative electronic music at it purest.
Both timeless and futuristic, soundscapes imagined by Loderbauer and Sienkiewicz could serve as a perfect antidote to turbo-speed contemporaneity with its tweets, social networks, neuroses and unavoidable anxieties. This music is created without paying attention to current trends and tendencies, although it simultaneously takes its due place among the works of noble pioneers, from Popol Vuh's Transilvanian hymns in Herzog's "Nosferatu" and Lionel Marchetti's concrete report from the glacier, to Simon Fisher Turner's Himalayan soundtracks. More than 20 minutes of material contained in "Ridges" is a document of research passions of both musicians, while for the listeners it could serve as an invitation for imaginative sound journeys, but also for a bit of research that could - and should! - be undertaken on one's own.
