max loderbauer & jacek sienkiewicz - B Himalaya
Berlin Atonal Recordings is happy to announce two forthcoming releases, both featuring live cuts from two of the most talked about performances at the 2015 edition of the festival. Synthesiser genius Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric, Vilod, Moritz von Oswald Trio) and techno experimentalist Jacek Sienkiewicz (Recognition) combined for a stunning live show on the opening night of festival 2015. Blending harmonic drones and almost unrecognizably distended vocal samples with adroitly weighted melodic passages, this collaboration was a masterclass in expertly crafted ambient music from two of the genres' leading exponents. Two passages from this set have been mastered and cut to vinyl in a special 12" with artwork by Pedro Maia based on his visuals for the show.

CD Version (Still available is also the west ridge/east ridge maxi 12" version from earlier on as R-EP035)
Tracklist:
1. est , 2. tib, 3. hak, 4. sir, 5. tuk, 6. gnd, 7. noe, 8. wet, 9. hut
+ CD bonus tracks 10. west ridge , 11. east ridge taken from R-EP035
Kosmos of sound phenomena is devoid of a distinct beginning and end, fluid and polymorphous. Stream of sound is continuous, no matter whether and which volatile events are registered, and which ones are omitted. It
is a complex state which transgresses borders defined by source, signal and mechanism of perception. Pastoral/tropical soundscapes and post-brutalist compositions by Max Loderbauer and Jacek Sienkiewicz from their "End" CD seem to evoke those situations where can actually hear objects, shapes and time flow itself, a sort of synaesthesia which erases and obliterates beginnings and ends of events, processes and phenomena. Apocalyptic and contemplative spaces generated by this pair of seasoned sound creators explode genre bastions of ambient and IDM, leading into the spectral areas once explored by such pioneers and Popol Vuh or Ilhan Mimaroglu. Above all, etheric and extra-sensitive "End" marks the meeting of two incurable individualists, who use various tools of their trade to come up with a surprisingly atemporal effect, an insistent pulse of detail on an ever-morphing background. Without vivid commentary and recognizable soundbites of the present, "End" is simultaneously an interesting projection of hopes and anxieties of the New Age. Core of tracks included on the record has been produced on the occasion of Max and Jacek appearing as a live duo during 2015's Berlin Atonal festival, which resulted in well received “Alpine-Tatra-Himalaian" EP "Ridges". Remaining compositions are natural conclusion of their friendship, conversations, meetings, trips and recording sessions that operate according to the rule of free improvisation with a reduced instrumental setup.

Tracklist :
A: West Ridge B: East Ridge
Info:
Valleys, ravines, crags, inaccessible mountain peaks, abyss. Since times immemorial, stark mountain landscape has always been humankind's inspiration and a constant reference point for many generations of exploratory artists. "Ridges" is a result of a creative encounter between veteran of improvised avant-electronics Max Loderbauer (among others, co-creator of Sun Electric, member of Moritz von Oswald Trio, and frequent collaborator of Ricardo Villalobos) and spiritus movens of Warsaw-based label Recognition Jacek Sienkiewicz. Meeting takes place not only on the level of investigating pure sound and building complex structures, but also on the level of fascination with mountainside aura and mystique that is common to both artists: Alps (Loderbauer) and Tatra (Sienkiewicz), as well as with the vocal cultures of communities inhabiting theese areas. Deeply introspective and individualistic confrontation
between two peer sensibilities and imaginative worlds gave birth to two separate compositions in the vein of contemplative electronic music at it purest.
Both timeless and futuristic, soundscapes imagined by Loderbauer and Sienkiewicz could serve as a perfect antidote to turbo-speed contemporaneity with its tweets, social networks, neuroses and unavoidable anxieties. This music is created without paying attention to current trends and tendencies, although it simultaneously takes its due place among the works of noble pioneers, from Popol Vuh's Transilvanian hymns in Herzog's "Nosferatu" and Lionel Marchetti's concrete report from the glacier, to Simon Fisher Turner's Himalayan soundtracks. More than 20 minutes of material contained in "Ridges" is a document of research passions of both musicians, while for the listeners it could serve as an invitation for imaginative sound journeys, but also for a bit of research that could - and should! - be undertaken on one's own. Berlin Atonal is pleased to announce the release of Mika Vainio's live performance at the 2016 edition of the festival. Accompanied by the artwork from Vainio's personal archives, its soft lack of focus is reminiscent of the natural looseness in his sound programming, lending itself to jazz as much as any form of electronic music. Right at the tips of his fingers, sparks fly unhindered by background noise, left to saturate in his universe of swollen intent. This pared-down, sensitive, and serious music has no parallel.
Deep, throbbing analogue laments emanate from the outset reaching far into the furthest fissures of Kraftwerk's main hall, a chasmic exercise in arching minimalism. Between crisp, upfront sonic assault and backset rhythmic work, it morphs about the cavernous hall exploring to the core the relationship between sound and architecture. Unrelenting and icily atmospheric, the haptic saturation arouses a body of nerves.
As ever the scope of Vainio's poignant work is vast, with limited tools at his disposal. Motifs are revisited and
reiterated, calmly rendering confrontational and extreme mechanisms. Feedback blasts buzz over and destroy passages, punctuated by sparse rhythm. As the performance draws towards a close, percussive sounds come to the fore. Rhythmic patterns hint but never falling into predictable repetition, always manipulated, Vainio etching away with his machines. A long-form performance, of ebbing passages, it grows in quasi-orchestral style as mountainous sounds vie for daylight in a thick sound horizon.

In a year which made impossible the now highly anticipated annual unveiling of new projects and collaborations that usually accompanies Berlin Atonal, the festival has compiled a major selection of new works by a range of artists from across the advanced musical landscape. Entitled More Light the compilation traverses the vast spectrum of musical
experience.
French producer Aho Ssan - who made his debut at Berlin Atonal's 2019 edition - has smelted the vocals of Exzald S into a multi-layered track that gestures towards a future language for computer-produced music. New York's Hiro Kone pairs with group A's Tot Onyx to debut their collaboration with an outstanding showpiece of groaning power-surge electronics, while legendary futurist Gerald Donald XOR Gate alias.
Speculative widescreen-electronics protagonists Roly Porter and Paul Jebanasam unveil the first recorded track of their collaborative Altar project, conjuring up an entire ecology composed of both positively and negatively charged emotional-electronic particles. Enchanted Belgian magicians Pablo's Eye offer a new track that grows out of the melancholic ambient-pop that the collective has been making since the 90s, while Nkisi hones in on a section of her premiere Atonal '19 set ''Initiation" and reworks it into a brawling, bleak, hard-edged trampler.
These tracks sit beside a transformational collab between Abdullah Miniawy and Carl Gari, evocative synthesised works from Caterina Barbieri and Laurel Halo, unclassifiable post-ambient from exael and Kazakh-British violinist Galya Bisengalieva and much much more. The festival's legendary revived imprint which has previously hosted contributions from Cabaret Voltaire, Psychic TV, Marshstepper and others now has a monumental new chapter.

Berlin Atonal Recordings is happy to announce two forthcoming releases, both featuring live cuts from two of the most talked about performances at the 2015 edition of the festival. Peder Mannerfelt supplies four jams fashioned out of his own exceptional live show at the festival. Raw, unsoftened, brutely analog sound from an EMS Synthi AKS punctures space in an oddly futuristic rhythmic experiment, gesturing at a brand new way of thinking about electronic music. The cuts are also packaged in a special 12" featuring artwork based on his own breathtaking live audio- visual show.

Berlin Atonal is proud to pick up on a tradition begun in 1984 with the publication of two volumes of live recordings from the 1983 edition of the festival. Those records bore witness to the most inventive, adventurous sounds of the festival, and therefore of their time, containing live bits from Psychic TV, La Loora and Z'EV. Berlin Atonal Vol. 3 carries this custom forward three decades with selections from four of the standout performances of Berlin Atonal 2014. Of course Cabaret Voltaire's lauded and historical ?rst show in over 20 years is featured, Richard H Kirk's no-nostalgia and machinery driven set ?rmly putting the Cabaret Voltaire project in a future-facing direction. Miles Whittaker's surprising and muscular live performance also contributes a cut, as does festival favourite Fis with his characteristically lumpy, textural soundscapes. Finally, two selections from Abdulla Rashim's memorable session gesture toward a possible future for synthesised music. TRACKLIST: A. Cabaret Voltaire - Microscopic Flesh Fragment B. Cabaret Voltaire - Universal Energy (Live Version) C. Miles Whittaker - Vagabond Nº7 D. Fis - Dist CL (Atonal Version) E. Abdulla Rashim F. Abdulla Rashim

Bill Withers & Studio Rio - Lovely Day (Studio Rio Instrumental Version)
Repress soon!
As mood changers go, this track is up there with the best. Last year whilst DJing with miche at Shapes festival in the snow-capped mountains of Switzerland, a breathtaking yet ominous Alpine sky suddenly became a picture postcard moment. The clouds parted and a double rainbow formed, as miche dropped Studio Rio's bossa nova remake of Bill Withers’ all-time classic 'Lovely Day'. From there, the dancefloor shifted gears and morphed into full-swing feel-good vibes, in a beautiful, spontaneous moment nobody could have planned for.
Mr Bongo now proudly presents a reissue of this brilliant, bossa-channelling Bill Withers reinterpretation from Studio Rio’s 2014 release ‘The Brazil Connection’. Masterminded by the German, Grammy award-winning Berman Brothers, the project was born out of their deep love of Brazilian music. “Our goal was to bring the Brazilian joie de vivre to iconic performances by well-known artists. What would these classic songs sound like had they been recorded in the studios of Rio de Janeiro in the first place, with the best Brazilian musicians and arrangers?” the brothers reflect.
Capturing the life force of Brazil, the beating heart that is its music, they set out to find the musicians who would fit best with their concept. Landing in Rio in 2013 a series of coincidences led to them being introduced to their idols Marcos Valle and Roberto Menescal, who both agreed to come on board. The Berman Brothers also wanted to find some of the musicians who recorded with one of Brazil’s most influential composers Tom Jobim. “Fifty years after Jobim made the music that really defines bossa nova, we found that many of his sidemen were still active, including Paulo Braga of Jobim’s famed rhythm section. It was magic; everything just fell into place.”
There's no question that the original of ‘Lovely Day’ is up there as one of the most feel-good, spirit-lifting anthems of all time. Here the brothers, with the help of a whole host of Brazil’s finest musicians, rework Bill’s soul-fuelled groove into a bossa nova slice of sunshine. With the blessing of Bill and Sony, they were given access to the original multitracks so they could incorporate Bill’s vocals perfectly into the new arrangement.
Joy-injected horns and bouncing double bass blend with the smile-inducing samba flavour of Pretinho da Serrinha’s cavaquinho playing. Tying it all together Torcuato Marinao who worked with the likes of Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, completes the line-up as arranger of the songs.
The perfect end-of-the-night track, mood lifter or soul warmer, remakes don’t get much better than this. More
As mood changers go, this track is up there with the best.

S E L E K T ? S E L E K T is the name of the new Bureau B sublabel
S E L E K T is the 12" platform for experiments by musicians on the label or other artists
S E L E K T offers space for collaborations and remixes. No borders
The protagonists:
Automat: Berlin music collective comprising Jochen Arbeit (Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut), Achim Färber (Project Pitchfork, Prag) and Georg Zeitblom (Sovetskoe Foto). Their debut album appeared in April 2014 on Bureau B.
Max Loderbauer: Berlin musician, producer and sonic architect on ambient, IDM and minimal techno terrain. One half of the Sun Electric duo in the 1990s, later a member of the Moritz von Oswald Trio, various collaborations with Ricardo Villalobos.
The outcome: dark, hypnotic, experimental electro dub/IDM
Andreas Reihse (Kreidler) on Automat & Max Loderbauer:
Muffled hammering grows rhythmical. An uncarpeted snare joins in, clicks and clacks, babbling, racing from left to right around your head, out the back and in through the front again, a beat, a beat drives forward, forward through jungle, tunnels, pushing on and on, Tempelhof, down the corridor, knocking, knock knock, doors open, everyone in. Doors close. A cigarette. Menthol. Hangs in the air. Screws the spring into the metal. Sacral. Sharpens. Sharpens. The sound gets dirtier. Breaks off. Breathe. Another cigarette. Menthol. Feedback fills the room and on it goes.
Automat and Max Loderbauer open proceedings on the new SELEKT label quite masterfully with an auspicious 4 track EP - Verstärker / Hall / Kompressor / Echo. How did this come about? Automat, busy recording their second album, came across Max Loderbauer in the neighbouring studio. They got along swimmingly and started working together straight away. "Everything played live, no overdubs" as Automat's bass player Georg Zeitblom confirms - first take, no shake. The studio was stripped down to basics. No computers though: a tape machine, guitar amplifier, analogue EQs, rehearsal space: "Re-rewind, the crowd say Bo Selekter!"

max loderbauer & jacek sienkiewicz - west ridge
