On the cusp of their 30th year with Warp, now is the time to reflect on the important presence of Plaid, aka Ed Handley and Andy Turner. An institution since the late 80s, they’re monumental cornerstones for any self-respecting electronic music fan; mainly as Plaid, but also under aliases including The Black Dog and Balil - not to mention their work with Bjork.
Playful and wondrous, their 11th album ‘Feorm Falorx’ is generally gentler than the dark angularity its predecessor ‘Polymer’, but it’s no less deep, and maintains the melodicism for which they’re loved. It’s still highly rhythmic too - traversing ‘Set If Off’ hi-hats, digitised harpsichords, mangled mandolin, cascading strings, rude basslines, mercurial grooves and even a touch of goth guitar.
Speaking about the first single, Plaid explain: “Skeletal ballad, C.A., arriving from the Feorm at Falorx, propels us into a misty, 4am ghost-dance. Its miniature micro pulses have electric support from Mason Bee and a Falorxian plasma choir, guiding us to the dawn.”
Keen advocates of technology, on ‘Feorm Falorx’ they manage to sound cutting edge, but also warm, human and nostalgic - purveying a sort of high-tech-retro-futurism. As usual they’re ever evolving, but there’s also line traceable right back within their own music. From their maverick early releases until now, they’ve embraced new methods of synthesis and explored diverse musical styles, maintaining a thread that spins through the early hip hop of their youth and beyond - to the sounds of the 60s and 70s that inspired it. Although not immediately obvious, on closer listen you can discern the influence of wigged-out grooves like Prince’s ‘Soft and Wet’, Bob James’ ‘Westchester Lady’ and Jethro Tull’s ‘Bourée’.
The creatively emancipated, light-hearted nature of the sounds is reflected in the album’s concept, which finds the duo recreating a recent performance at the Feorm Festival, an intergalactic shindig held on the planet Falorx. In order to survive the Falorxian atmosphere they were converted into light so the traditional recording devices they’d taken on their spacecraft ‘The Campbell’ were not functional. Fortunately, having consulted Earth’s Space Agency, it was deemed safe to recreate the performance back in their London studio. Extensive testing of the resulting recordings have established a level of thought contamination deemed, “perfectly acceptable.”
The album artwork and press photos were created using a myriad of AI technology, Image Synthesis and OpenAI's DALL·E, which can be seen in action here. Expanding on the same theme using AI/AR mechanisms, these will be followed by videos and a graphic novel, building into a whole Falorxian planet.
Plaid have toured extensively and collaborated widely over the years, writing for and performing with sonic researchers, percussion groups, solo artists and orchestras - most recently for the BBC Concert Orchestra. They have written for computer games and scored several feature films, one of which, ‘Tekkon Kinkreet’, was awarded the Japan Academy Prize for Animation of the Year.

Following 2014's Reachy Prints, Plaid can now announce the forthcoming release of their new album The Digging Remedy, out on 10th June. Uncover the lead track 'CLOCK' on thediggingremedy.com, a growing collaborative project with digital artist Cabbibo (cabbi.bo). Plaid sit right at the very heart of global electronica. In fact there's a very real sense in which Ed Handley and Andy Turner are the perfect encapsulation of what the electronic music of their generation was all about, they brought new rhythmic variation, emotive melody and sensual textures to electronic music, creating a warm and welcoming counterpart to the white heat of the rave explosion. On new album The Digging Remedy all the elements that first inspired Ed and Andy are there - like the ecstatic Detroit chords in 'CLOCK' - but everything is bigger and broader in scope, more luxuriant, more gleaming with detail. There are fascinating new additions, including contributions on flute and guitar from multi-instrumentalist Benet Walsh, adding even more to Plaid's ever increasing intricate sound palate. But though the production values are the very highest, none of this is slickness or high drama simply for its own sake, and never do Plaid engage in the crowd-pleasing vainglorious stadium bombast that is all too common in electronic music now. Of course they don't - as they say: "in our opinion it should be the artists leading the audiences, not the other way round". That's something that could stand as Plaid's motto, and the thing that's kept them so very fresh over all these years, even as their aims and values remain just what they were at the start.

London braingaze experimenters Seefeel return with Sol.Hz, their first full-length album in 15 years and a carrying-on of the hazy IDM that saw to their becoming one of Warp Records' most distinctive early signings. Famously among the first acts on the label to fold guitars into an electronic framework, the group again dissolve the adumbrations of shoegaze, dub and ambient techno, a now much-exploited sonic terrain by sound revivalists today. Tracks like 'Ever No Way' and 'Humidity Switch' drift through thick clouds of delay and bass pressure, where Mark Clifford's intricate hand permits fragments of lick and rhythm pulse below Sarah Peacock's processed, hyper-thin vocals. Squarepusher is back on Warp with Kammerkonzert - Tom Jenkinson's 16th studio album and a harmony-driven electronic "chamber concerto" structured across 14 movements, from 'K1 Advance' to 'K14 Welbeck'. Following 2024's Dostrotime - a sound-thesis on the crystallisation of time in the COVID era, frozenness expressed in breakbeats - and arriving after Warp's recent reissue of his early 'Stereotype' EP makings from 1994, here Jenkinson foregrounds the orchestra, as baroque-tinged harmonies, chamber-like arrangements and intricate interplays discourse through his trademark electronic toolkit, patience be damned despite the real instrumentation. Early previews such as 'K2 Central' suggest a more reflective Squarepusher, folding IDM complexity into the architecture of a modern concerto while extending the classical-meets-machine tension running through his work since Hard Normal Daddy and Ultravisitor.

This is Nala Sinephro's debut original film score, for Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine, which was premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival (to a 15min standing ovation!!) ahead of its official release on October 3rd. The Smashing Machine explores the story of legendary mixed martial arts & UFC fighter Mark Kerr, and it stars Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt. The score was composed, produced, arranged, mixed and mastered by Nala Sinephro, and it features performances by longstanding collaborators James Mollison, Nubya Garcia, Lyle Barton, Dwayne ‘Wonky Logic’ Kilvington, Morgan Simpson, Natcyet Wakili, Mark Mollison and Sheila Maurice-Grey. As well as the London orchestra Orchestrate, who previously provided strings for Sinephro’s 2024 critically acclaimed album, Endlessness.

Originally released in 1993, Surfing On Sine Waves is the second album released under the Warp Artificial Intelligence series (the series also includes the two titular compilations, as well as contributions by Autechre, The Black Dog, F.U.S.E. and more).
Surfing On Sine Waves is also the sole album released under Richard D. James’ (aka Aphex Twin’s) Polygon Window alias. The name “Polygon Window” originally appeared as a track name under Richard D. James’ other pseudonym The Dice Man, as the track title for his submission on Artificial Intelligence. Surfing On Sine Waves was chosen as a title by Rob Mitchell based on a quote by Richard D. James. The album debuted at #2 on the UK dance charts. The album was followed the same year with a companion EP titled Quoth. The EP’s title track originally appeared on the album, accompanied by additional songs who first appeared on this release.
Fast forward 32 years to 2025, Surfing On Sine Waves (Expanded Edition) sees the pair of companion releases as a single entity, out on vinyl and CD.
