Marrying modern boogie and classic R&B, with cosmic leanings and Balearic touches, Payfone manage to keep all the essence of the early days whilst bringing a contemporary swagger to the floor.
Each element in ‘I Was In New York’ gets the space it deserves. Palm muted guitars and sashaying synth echoes flutter over the top of a strutting slap bass courtesy of Giulio Granchelli. A simplicity that sings – simultaneously giving your mind the space it needs to drift off into a daydream of sunsets over cityscapes. Introspective, meditative and innocent, Dayna Talley’s spoken word vocals lull listeners into memories of tranquil times. Set to be one of 2019’s standout songs, its refreshingly original and sure to cut through the noise.

Gravitating around a metallic, pulsating synth, modulated to bounce at points and brood at others, mystic flurries drift in the distance, as pads wash across the horizon. Len Xiang’s melancholic tale reverberates throughout, with those sweet sax sounds from Billy Brooks Paul and a spring reverbed guitar riffing off into the ocean - elevating this into pure paradise.

Late night dweller Todd Modes can be found deejaying around Detroit playing anything from offbeat ambient grooves to spaced out Disco jams. He released the Todd Modes / Bobby Dolo EP on the cult underground label M1 Sessions, and as Cosmic Handshakes with Dial 81 they put out an EP called 'The Delicate Details'. Now he teams up with Golf Channel's own wild man Mike Severson from the psychedelic Disco rock outfit Heroes of the Galleon Trade. After a session one night, the two step out for a cold one and bump into burly biker bar bandit Randy Winter and the singer song writer sex visionary Emily Infinity. After a few drinks they invited them back to the studio and the vocals were set. Put on your jean jacket slip on your leather boots and ready yourself for a night thrill ride. From a basement studio in Hackney, East London comes PAYFONE's 2nd release on GOLF CHANNEL - QUARANTINE b/w PADRE, PRAY FOR US. Following on from 2014's extremely well received PARADISE heater, PAYFONE continue down a similar path for the A side QUARANTINE. Featuring once again 24 year old vocal powerhouse Louis Howard Jones, QUARANTINE is a semi auto biographical take on the hardships of a an underprivileged youth, set against a tough Phil Passera production that sounds more New York City 1984 than New Port County 2004 (Jones was born and raised in Cardiff). Cruising at 120 BPM, the dark funk guitar intro gives way to some heavy slap bass and deep synth that touches Michael Jackson's THRILLER before the direct and brutal vocals of Jones hit you right between the eyes. PADRE, PRAY FOR US is a bizarre Afro-Cuban inspired homage to Passera's Italian father Sergio ( who's telephone call can be heard on the songs intro). Featuring the lethal trumpet of former Cuban military private Eikel Venegas Hernandez, this instrumental takes you to the Pinata Party via downtown Lagos. Golf Channel every time !

Recorded in 1973, these two gems were originally album tracks on Marvin's "You're The Man" LP. Now these two and only gems curated by the Mizell Brothers are back to back for the first time on a 7" single. While on Expansion, the label art pays homage to Tamla. Marvin was never on Motown. There is a later, alternative remix of "Where Are We Going", but this 7" is the 1973 original.

Two years on from the seductive disco deviance of his previous full length, Mystic Jungle returns to his home base Periodic Records with a two track 12” single titled “Words of Love.” Masculine and feminine vocals interplay amidst textures of dreamy dub delirium, their tones smooth, yearning and androgynous as they plead over and over... repeating “Say You Love Me” like some spell of desperate romantic magic. Splatters of tropical island percussion move through starbound synth hooks, and sparkles of stellar vapor sooth the soul as moonlit organ chords ride equatorial riddims and chunky funky FM-bass riffs while all around, saxophonics blow like a humid mediterranean breeze. And on the flip, the extended version gives plenty of space over to club-minded dubwise drum intros, freely floating vocal layers, and seriously sun-scorched guitar solos that send waves of fire ripping through the air. As is now a well-established tradition, when 7 appears in the catalogue number it is the turn of handyman Asymmetrical. The title takes its inspiration from a tag that appeared in the bathroom of the historical Knick Knack Yoda after one of the (in)usual nights, and is a leap in time, a project born from the layering of different sessions that took place between 2018 and 2020 and only sees the light of day today. 7 is also the number of inches of PVC on which this double is engraved, hosting on one side the track that gives the album its name, on whose rhythms the sound of Luigi Gargano’s saxophone echoes. On the other Estetica Della Notte, is a journey into the phenomenology of tumultuous nights in the shadow of Rome’s Dome. The covers of the 170 numbered records are embellished by Ester Reset’s photographic project, available for extended fruition in the editorial project accompanying the 30 limited edition copies.
