B FROM E (Frej Garcia Levin) represents a new generation of talented young artists making waves in Copenhagen. Of Mexican-Danish descent, and born and raised in the notorious tower blocks of the south-western suburbs of Copenhagen, the 27-year old is on the up-and- up. In high demand as the founder of boom bap rap group NATKAT, producer of pop outfit Ny Sensei (New Sensei) and head of tape-only label Buddahood, the multi-talent seems to have a hand in everything at the moment. His 2017 debut ‘Porno TR-XXX’ (C.U.P) saw some of the hottest names in the game spinning B FROM E at last year’s Dekmantel festival, resulting in offers from several well-known record labels. His new record on Tartelet Records comes as four cuts exploring different paths of the garage house sound. The opener ‘Dark Energy’ is fueled by filthy breaks and a nostalgic theme that would not be out of place in an early Atari computer game. ‘The People (Dream Mix)’ is a trippy tour through subtle layered melodies, carried by a stripped-back groove. On the B-side you will find ‘Positive Sister (2605 Tool)’: a chunky cut with a serious bassline. Saving the best for last, ‘You Will See’, rounds off the record in style. RB presents: Strada Sound Effects! That's what you all have been waiting for: a record with nothing but sound tools. It pretty much does what it says: sirens, wind, water, ambience, and kids on LSD hysterically laughing. Isn't that great? Speaking of those laughing kids. That's what caught our attention during a warm and cozy Plastic People night with Âme's Kristian. Blessed with an original copy of this record released via Kobe's honorable Strada Records store, an email attempt in purchasing a copy ended up in a re-issue agreement as the initial run of approximately 300 copies was long lost and gone. On top of it, Kristian lost his in one of these nasty "airport baggage clerks DJ robbery" incidents.
You can use it for intros, outros, mixes, tricks and the likes. Plus: Danny "The Dancer" Wang explains in his scientific and lyrical liner notes why YOU have to acquire this record in an 180g heavy plate edition with nice artwork as per usual. In its main mix, Surprise is a classic early nineties house track that heavily nods towards the Big Apple, house music’s disco roots and the power of swinging drum programming, albeit with meticulous production work and engineering. In short, it sounded and sounds as un-German as Germans can. The Holy Bassline Mix on the other hand is already in the shape of things to come. Carried by a Roland TB-303, sprinkled with trance bits and elegiac pads, its in perfect balance.
Others thought so as well. Heavily supported by David Holmes and Andrew Weatherall, it was the manager of the latter who licensed it to Eye-Q Records UK with the addition of the Fake Jazz Mix and ordered remixes by freshmen Isoleé and Losoul who became pillars of Playhouse. In its main mix, Surprise is a classic early nineties house track that heavily nods towards the Big Apple, house music’s disco roots and the power of swinging drum programming, albeit with meticulous production work and engineering. In short, it sounded and sounds as un-German as Germans can. The Holy Bassline Mix on the other hand is already in the shape of things to come. Carried by a Roland TB-303, sprinkled with trance bits and elegiac pads, its in perfect balance.
Others thought so as well. Heavily supported by David Holmes and Andrew Weatherall, it was the manager of the latter who licensed it to Eye-Q Records UK with the addition of the Fake Jazz Mix and ordered remixes by freshmen Isoleé and Losoul who became pillars of Playhouse. Originally released back towards the tail end of 1998, Roots Revisited is Theo in full on percussion mode, perfectly balancing the rhythmic elements with his innate understanding of true soul and how to implement it. Lead track "Dan Ryan" is one of those deeply meditative Theo cuts that feels like it can probably seep into infinity without any danger of losing its charm, whilst the Liberation Mix of "Walking Through The Sky" will provide a bone of contention for the most feverish of Theo followers out there.
