Garrett David returns to Distant Hawaii with ‘Ebb Vibe’ a five track EP of beach bronzed cinematic house, delivered in his trademark unhurried style.
We kick off with the EP’s soaring, blissful and chirping title track, quickly setting the scene in an almost Lynchian manner. A smoke filled hotel lobby bustling with ghosts of the past and soundtracked by a wistful, swaying piano. ‘Vermillion’ and ‘Down Around’ quickly pick up the mood, shifting the mood into a for flavoursome gear as the sonics twist inside out. Bumpin’ house sounds that spiral into the afternoon sky, tightly knit together by deft drum programming and deep-seated percussion. The B-side lulls to a start with ‘Stewing’, a chugging ambient number with more than a nod to the streets of Chicago and Detroit and the raw house sounds that echo through them. Glimpses of light appear through heavy smoke, a lone street wanderer calls aloud. Closing out the release is ‘Simple In Spring’, an ever evolving and flamboyant house affair that plunges the mind and body directly into 6am territory. A spectrum of steady drum flecks and patters, a kaleidoscopic synth smattering and a splash of the good stuff.

Titonton Duvante’s Residual imprint has long been considered one of the most respected house-leaning labels in the game. Over the course of the past two decades, the Ohio-based label has housed works from some of the scene’s foremost players, with the likes of Boo Williams, John Tejada, Demarkus Lewis and Volcov among those who’ve repped the tight-knit label with distinction. The label’s latest is another high point for all concerned. A V/A featuring the works of Duvante & Andreas Saag as well as Garrett David, Todd Sines (under his .xtrak alias) and Fym, it’s a wonderfully varied and exciting release that speaks volumes of the label’s ability to consistently churn out top drawer house music.

john tejada - Repurposed
Hot on the heels of Refraction Vol. 2, Residual welcomes the return of long time friend John Tejada. The prolific programming master serves up salacious selections that are searing to say the least. The lead track Jaco is a Pepe Bradock influenced piece the twists and turns with breaky beat work. The numbers on the B side are firmly focused on filing the dance floor. Round the Outside shows Tejada in top form. Upfront drums and basslines perfectly paired with flittering melodies. Repurposed is more minimal in form but no less effective. Quirky tweeks along cascading riffs.

Titonton Duvante's Residual imprint operated out of Columbus, Ohio from the late eighties to the mid-nineties as mainly a vehicle for his own works, but also other legends of the US such as John Tejada, Boo Williams and Todd Sines. He's kickstarted the label again and he's doing it in style with a new track on the A side "Concupiscent": a darkly emotive serving of broken beat high tech soul. Hamburg's Smallville affiliated pursuer of modern deepness Christopher Rau gives us the sublime minimal groove of "Russian Cartoons" too. On the flip, another legend of US techno; Seattle's Jeff Samuel makes a comeback, on the uplifting and funky feelgood groove "WT Fader". Finally Chicago's Garrett David, resident at Smart Bar and buyer at Gramaphone Records gives us the Jeff Mill's tribute "Stasis"
