For more than fifteen years now, the Paris-based DJ, composer, party promoter and label head Alexandre Paounov aka Popof is an indispensable institution of France's Techno and House scene. He is not only providing a constant flow of high-quality electronic dance music but is also responsible for some of the most exciting dance events in Southern Europe, being a member of the party collective Heretik System. Especially in the last five years, Popof's releases were synonymous for the really exceptional moments during a night at the clubs, thanks to their intentionally open-minded variety between a minimalistic rocker attitude ("Alcoolic" on the British label Cr2), hypnotic guitar riffs ("Do you want me" on his own Form imprint) or siren-noise-affine percussive disco ("Roxy" on Cocoon Compilation J). The success also got him numerous remix jobs for the likes of Depeche Mode, Tiga or John Starlight ("Road Rage"), among others. With his maxi debut on Cocoon, an uncompromising dance floor attack, Popof proves to to have a sound grasp of contemporary developments: in "Blue Dream", a penetrating alarm clock provides magic moments of recognition within all the flickering rhythms while "Dancing Moon" makes the bass membrane vibrate and finally "Hockner" transforms his sparingly accentuated Chicago Acid into a collective ecstasy. This is how electronic energy sounds in 2012.
Additionally, the digital version contains a remix by Maetrik: as Popof has already remixed the track "Push Me" on Maetrik's latest release - also included in the digital version only - and gained a big success, Maetrik didn't want to be left behind, unceremoniously remixed "Blue Dream" in a new groove and arrangement and thus brought the tune to new heights.

Already their debut maxi "Soopertrack" on Border Community from 2006, which can still be found in many DJ cases, but also the "Titelheld EP" (2006) and the album "Schöne Neue Extrawelt" from the year 2008, which belong to the best-selling releases on Cocoon recordings, have also ultimately rocketed the two Hamburg residents Arne Schaffhausen and Wayan Raabe - famous for their excessive live performances - to the Mount Olympus of the most style-forming Techno protagonists within the last ten years. "We don't want cowardly Zeitgeist Techno. We want to be courageous and dare new sounds and melodies. Sunrise scenarios, energy, revolution and 'Kaputtheit' - these are all parts of the Extrawelt", the two musicians once said, and this artistic credo applies for the long-awaited second Extrawelt album, too. "We took our time and have collected tracks that have particularly touched us, no matter whether they are club-compatible or not. Besides that, we didn't want to repeat ourselves but create a unique second album that's stands for itself." Without doubt, the two have succeeded in this!
Writing about the single tracks here would not make much sense. Just a few words: Every single track is unique! And still, there is definitely inside what the label promises: Extrawelt. The variety and, at the same time, the unity of the most different sounds, the caring arrangement and the fascination for details can only be described as a great sonic performance! This is again that valiant and brave reaching into the well-filled sonic lucky bag of modern electronic music that makes "In Aufruhr" so much more than just dancefloor entertainment. The spectrum of musical influences has again extended and the most different styles of electronic music are connecting seamlessly with the Extrawelt spirit. Here, the sonic Zeitgeist is not the determining variable for the music - what really counts is the creation of nothing more and nothing less than a new world, by the means of a never-exhausting power of acoustic imagination which shows new facets, even after the thousandth time of listening pleasure. One should be careful with the use of superlatives, but this is exactly how masterpieces are sounding!

For the first time on this planet Dial owner LAWRENCE shows up on an excursion to his beloved PAMPA imprint. The double feature "Kurama" presents two deepy enchanting anthems, a timeless vision of love. After touring around the globe with his new label mate DJ KOZE since ages, having the most successful release in Dial history with Kosi's Efdemin remix, sharing music with each other like crackbrained, it is not a big surprise for LAWRENCE to occur with two of his best pieces on PAMPA Records.

Well known for his releases on Mule Electronic, Ghostly International, Styrax and his own imprints Smallville, Dial and Laid, it was his first Mix CD on Cocoon Recordings "Timeless" which made Lawrence put some cats among the pigeons. Ruede Hagelstein wants it all, and not just that jazz. The Berlin producer, known for his productions that straddle the boundary between house on techno, released on labels like Souvenir and Upon You Records, will release his debut album 'Soft Pack' together with his band, The Noblettes on November 18, 2011.
A Priori is the first track on the indie-electronic LP, and cannot claim itself free from jazz influences. With piano, a horn section, and brushed snares, the track swings with the best of them. Since Ruede's vocals also require something a little more dancefloor-friendly, this digital appetizer will be served up with a remix from the man himself. The vinyl will follow with remixes from Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, Noir and Tiefschwarz.

After successful remixes for Oliver Koletzki, Niko Schwind and Animal Trainer, it's Björn Störig's turn to deliver the goods on his first solo EP, 'Humming Top'. And boy, does he deliver: The fresh youngster presents high-calibre musical house, spiced up with funk, disco and jazz aesthetics.
Title track 'Humming Top' doesn't waste much time: Crisp percussive elements are laid over a beefy bass-line from the get-go, while a progressive piano melody mingles with a distinctly vintage synth. Climaxing over a mysterious vocal whisper, this is mellow tech house of the finest sort.
Moving on to 'Jazz Thang', the title says all. Without catering to clichés, the track literally oozes jazz sounds. A big, chugging bass-line lends momentum with the help of a heavy kick and sharp hi-hats, while horns, strings and a beautiful piano arpeggio are left to do their jazz thang. An absolute late-night wonder.
On the flip, the bare bones of 'Frizzante' are similarly techy, yet decisively sexed-up by viscously funky bass slaps and pressing vocal samples. As if things weren't hot enough already, a sax is introduced to drive things forward towards the apex, while an authentic percussive roll perfectly rounds of this highlight. Of course, nothing less is to be expected of an experienced drummer, who has proven his rhythmic abilities with The Koletzkis. Trust us, 'Frizzante' is one of the biggest groovers this side of the moon and a shining homage to boogie.
Last but not least, 'Connected Ways' shifts the mood from peak-time to more relaxed territory, finishing off the proceedings beautifully by fusing previously heard aspects into a deep groover that would be at home in warm-up sets and at Sunday afterhours alike. There isn't much left to say other than 'Congrats, Björn!'.

Following 'Romantic Thrills Part 1', the first EP connected to Niconé & Sascha Braemer's recent LP of the same name, vinyl lovers are now being treated to 'Romantic Thrills Part 2', which dazzles with three distinct remixes by Stil for Talent heavyweights Oliver Koletzki, Florian Meindl and Dan Caster. Again, all tracks are geared towards the dance floor as they appropriate those special moments of the originals, while employing them to a diverse range of new contextual frames.
First off, however, Niconé & Sascha Braemer present 'Love Me', one of the sexiest tech house tracks of their album. With its billowing synth pads and mesmerizing vocal that lead the way for an organic and super-deep bassline kicking in at the very right moment, it simply had to be cut in wax. Next, Oliver Koletzki shows us a different side to his usual output: while definitely being just as musical, his remix of 'Liar' surprises with a discoid edge. The humorous vocal sample that already made the original version so enjoyable eventually introduces funky guitar licks, which are perfectly supported by a dry kick and fat bassline. By working a rather tongue-in-cheek synth hook into the track's bridge, Oliver manages to turn 'Liar' into a wonderfully contemporary sounding nod to the 80s.
On the flip, things quickly turn more dynamic as Florian Meindl's remix of 'Little Love' ups the tempo through techy percussion and energetic stabs. The outcome is a jazzy groove-fest that can hold its own next to Niconé & Sascha's beautiful original. In fact, it feels as if Meindl injects the druggy 'Little Love' with a good dose of steroids as his remix pushes you from one climax to the next thanks to ultra-tight drum programming. Finally, Dan Caster throws down a dark mix of 'Run Away', which builds on the original's melancholic vibes. While Caster restrains from overusing Jan Blomqvist's vocals, he definitely doesn't hold back on the bass as muddy sub frequencies add to the track's emotive feel. Completed by hard-hitting hats and a very well arranged breakdown leading into a heavy kick drum, Dan Caster's mix provides this gem of a remix EP with a perfect round-off.

A mere 9 years old, Watergate has steadfastly become one of the world's most prominent electronic music institutions. This is due in no small part to its heady combination of picturesque location - its dancefloors face directly out onto the river Spree - a wall-to-wall LED light installation and its impeccable music policy, with the cream of the electronic crop passing through its doors on a weekly basis. The mix CD series, now in its 9th incarnation, is a further means for the club to stamp its seal onto the scene, with many of the club’s residents and regular talents having been invited to contribute. Previous artists have included the likes of Ellen Allien, Sascha Funke and Lee Curtiss, amongst others. This time round the mighty Schwarz brothers step up, using it as a means to take stock and look back at their extensive music career. Each previous artist having brought a specific concept to their mix, Ali and Basti decided to approach it as a way of presenting the tracks that began – and continue - their long-running affair with house music. The mix takes them all the way back to their early days throwing parties in Stuttgart, at the Red Dog club which they named in honour of the legendary Chicago venue. These soulful roots which first hooked them and got them producing, stuck with them throughout, an insistence of melody and warmth which has pervaded throughout all their productions regardless of whether it can be labeled deep house, electrohouse or minimal. This mix is just a way of demonstrating the sheer timelessness of classic production techniques and how they so readily still influence so many of today’s releases. Neither is it just a mere greatest hits of Chicago and Detroit, a legendary anthem like Frankie Knuckles’ ‘Baby Wants To Ride’ sitting quite comfortable alongside the tense melodies of John Roberts’ house, which itself wears its Chicago influence proudly on its sleeve. There are some real dancefloor bombs, the cult classic Intellidred remix of DJ Assassin which slides effortlessly into the infectious jack of Kevin Saunderson. The anthemic MK classic Burnin’ comes in a surprising new form, courtesy of Jay Haze, and there’s plenty more vocal action on the mix with Julio Bashmore’s recent smash ‘Father Father’ and a brand new Tiefschwarz production punctuated with the ethereal voice of Mama. One of Tiefschwarz’s first loves were the prolific house legends Masters At Work, a true personal milestone for the brothers when they were asked to remix their heroes’ smash hit ‘To Be In Love’. They’ve included one of their all-time favourites, the MAW remix of the Afro Celt Soundsystem, the world music collective on Peter Gabriel’s influential Real World Records. This then functions to lead out the mix, the brothers deftly tracing a line through a very recent Marc Ashken track on Hot Waves and into Romanthony’s ‘Rumpshaker’ which having been released on their own first label back in 1997, draws a neat circular close to this very personal retrospective.
