The third release to come from fresh new imprint Future Massive, is the 'Unknown Structure' EP from prolific electro producer Emile Facey, better known as Plant43. 'Unknown Structure' is five slices of sublime electronics, kicking off with the incredibly emotive 'Hearts Beat In Silence' which evokes a melancholic memory of those halcyon days of Summer. 'Flickering Neon' and the title track 'Unknown Structure' deliver a one-two knockout of stone-cold classic electro, before 'Slowburn Storms' ups the tempo to offer a new take on a deep-step sound. Final track 'Cloud Monolith' closes out the EP in style with a blissful excursion across a pulsating, arpeggiated soundscape.

Recorded in a string of sessions between Curve Pusher’s former Darnley Road location in London and new facility in UK seaside town Hastings, ?Old Tight Selektah? sees Radioactive Man and Ben Pest (OverworX) riff off their shared passions for studio hardware and live set jams, maintaining the funk at all times.

Lead track ?Old Tight? works in ?recorded licks from the Pest band’s horn section - Off-Key He-Man. Bar Tab smooths out into a glimmering and acid licked electro number. ?You Bring It, We’ll Wing It? enjoys more of the Pest brass service, slowing the pace to a dubby, broken beat tempo. Finishing up the EP ?Bracetings? is a jumpy, up tempo finish to the release showing off both producer’s flair for high precision beat programming.

Ben Pest is a hardware-made-techno specialist based in Bristol. He runs his own label OverworX and has also released his heady raucous sound on ?Varvet, Don’t and I Love Acid.

After a vigorous start from the freshly formed Alzaya label, next up is the Chilean rising talent Paula Tape who has teamed up with Volantis for the new brand release ‘Octava Dimension’, including the remixes curated by the prince of Netherlands, Elias Mazian and the Australian icon Tornado Wallace, masters like few others.

Paula Tape has developed a signature style in front of listeners eyes and ears with her drum patterns and her voice samples. After ‘Agua Congas EP’ on SOBO was welcomed warmly around the world and opened the door for club-oriented releases on Rhythm Section and Permanent Vacation. The original track channels electro and dreamy vibes carefully crafted by Volantis with Paula Tape’s hypnotic voice, all blending together for a single summer heater.

Remix by Elias Mazian, that recently pleased us with a sophisticated electronic pop release, kicks things off with a beautiful, melodic, overwhelming tune.

Tornado Wallace revisited the original version with his spacious sense of deep house groove and an unique, relentless drum programming.

wiederveröffentlichen zu dürfen. Den Anfang machen das Debüt
"Colours And Soul" von 1983, eine einstündige Odyssee durch
die Randgebiete der Poplandschaft, wie eine kaleidoskopische
Reise zwischen Coast-Funk, Trommelkreisen und New Wave,
sowie das zweite Werk "In The Night", das ein Jahr später
veröffentlicht wurde. Mit ihrer rotierenden Besetzung
entwickelte sich auch der Sound von Dunkelziffer rasch weiter.
Obwohl die spielerischen Elemente ihres Debüts erhalten
blieben, enthielt das zweite Album auch die bislang dichtesten,
intensivsten und ernstesten Tracks des Ensembles. Das
Kernseptett von Zerlett, Linke, Krachten, Von Senger, Keul,
Gelba und Schubert sowie der neuen Bassistin Rike Gratt kehrte
auf dieser 7-Track-LP in ihrem eigenen Flow-Zustand zurück. Die
Wiederveröffentlichung des 1989er Albums "Songs For
Everyone" folgt im Oktober!

Today, the Berlin-based artist, DJ and producer BOYS NOIZE (Alex Ridha) announces the release of two new songs on July 16th via his imprint BNR. A synapse-flooding contrasting climax of soaring euphoria, (+)side “Nude” combines lighters-in-the-air, peak rave-era pads (think Orbital or Underworld) with Cash's seductive hook, before the track drops into thundering tribal percussion, the vast shape of the song’s aural space echolocated by atonal samples and screeches. First working together on TOMMY CASH’s album ¥€$, the two iconoclasts´ shared appreciation of ex-Soviet rave culture is expressed through “Nude’s” aggressively liberatory, retro-future-shocked sound. The accompanying official music video is directed by Ridha´s frequent collaborator SUS BOY (Lil Peep, WEDIDIT).

"Xpress Yourself" on the (-)side stretches across time in its production, sound, and origins to deliver a techno tool of dark perfection. Boys Noize refined the track over the span of years, shifting and re-shifting elements before testing and re-testing the results live, allowing the club's response to sharpen its edge. The release also includes "Xpress Yourself Pt. 2”, a more EBM-informed iteration of the track's evolution with an ARP-2600 driven arpeggio.

For the second Re-Issue Series release we team up with London duo Euphonic for a deep dive into their back catalogue set across two releases featuring a number of artists who they collaborated with after the projects inception in 1997.

The group, consisting of lead producer Rob Henry and former Graffiti artist turned DJ Nick Trimm, fuse intricate programming and bass lines with traditional jazz/blues instrumentation and vocals to produce a diverse and varied selection of aural pleasures.

A chance encounter at the Blue Note club in Hoxton lead the pair to travel to New York to record with friends from the Brooklyn Hip Hop underground, including dr. Israel, Soothsayer, and Kirsty Rock, where both versions of "Jah Science" and "Revolution-Solution" were recorded.

These tracks were originally released on the Different Drummer label in 1998 and have long been unavailable...until now! Here's a taster of what's to come. Eyes peeled for part two.

Bouquet Records features Olive T. for their sixth EP release on vinyl to infuse their 2021 roster with the desired verve and energy that dormant club kids are thirsting for.

Releasing in early summer, the energetic dance tracks herald a return to the dance floor, uplifted by soul-stirring synthesiser orchestral strings.
The native New Yorker and scene fixture was influenced by 90's house, inspired by Raze, Deee-lite, Green Velvet, and smooth disco flows.
The ascension sensation of 'Goin' Up' builds on familiar house grooves with digital synths and a thoughtful utilisation of today's technology.

Known to play a range spanning hip hop to club, jazz to funk, disco to garage, and more, Olive T has DJ'd countless venues and over international airwaves.
An early exposure to house and techno, combined with a wide span of diverse musical taste, shaped her unique style. In 2020 she started her own 2 hour radio show on The Lot Radio.

Olive T worked with Tiro! due to her admiration of his use of traditional sounds of the 90's era, sensing he also listened prolifically to 90's house and techno. Tiro!'s remix of 'This Is A Bop' adds organic flare to the original.
A long-time fan of Matt Karmil, she invited him to remix 'Opaque' - He flips the track upside down to reveal a different, but still vibrant interpretation, with his technical approach to remixing.

Olive T has released singles and remixes on Nervous records, 2MR, and on her own. The four track record 'Goin' Up' marks Olive T's first label-released EP, and first release on San Diego-based Bouquet Records.

For number 89 in the Brazil45 series, we present a no-nonsense Brazilian funk / samba rock double-sider courtesy of the mighty Golden Boys and Silvio César.

The Golden Boys were a quartet formed in 1958 by the Correa brothers; Renato, Roberto, Ronaldo, and their cousin Valdir Anunciação. They enjoyed a stellar recording career, from the 50s through to the 90s, with members of the group still involved in music to this day. For this selection we headed to their self-titled 1975 album released on Odeon, and cherry-picked one of the group’s funkiest moments, 'Segura Na Cintura Dela (O Gavião)'. By now performing as a trio, they enlisted Paulo Debétio of Lemos E Debétio ?fame as executive producer, and on the controls, producer Milton Miranda. Miranda was a silent figure behind so many of the much-loved classic Odeon / EMI releases of the 60s and 70s.

'Beco Sem Saída’ is another Odeon release, and another classic produced by Milton Miranda. Taken from Silvio César's self-titled 1971 album, here the prolific singer and composer delivers a swinging samba rock / groove. With fantastic arrangements by Geraldo Vespar, this addictive swing was reconstructed in the 2000s when Drumagick sampled it for their track 'Sambarock'.

So here we have two slices of Brazilian dancefloor pressure just waiting to take centre stage again.

First up we head to the north of Brazil with a funky Forró / boogie hybrid monster, 'Vendedor De Mangaios' by Josan. Originally released in 1981 on the album 'Rio De Renovações’ on Copacabana Records. This addictive dancefloor gem is still relatively under the radar, but it has become a firm favourite at Bristol's Worm Disco Club parties and amongst the DJ's and collectors of Brazil's underground dance music scene.

Taken from the illustrious singer Bartô Galeno's self-titled 1977 album on Tapecar Records, 'Vou Tirar Você Daqui' is an unusual one. Not easily pigeon-holed, the song sits somewhere between MPB / funk and rock, yet isn't really any of them. Backed with a big orchestrated sound and tripped-out synths, the track has a truly unique feel.

We hope you dig these finds. Another testament to the diversity and depth of Brazil's rich musical heritage.

This is certainly both a mysterious one and an elusive one! Who were Grupo Natureza ?(Nature Group), and why is this release such a rarity?

'Pode Acreditar' was pressed on Som Livre Records in 1981 and it is believed very few copies were released into the commercial market. Those familiar with the productions of Lincoln Olivetti and Robson Jorge will no doubt recognise their hallmark sound here and that this single is 'probably' the work of the pair or one member at least. They were a regular in-house production team at Som Livre at the time, and there is a definite resemblance to Adriana's song 'Sei la Amor' from 1978 which Lincoln Olivetti was involved in.

Very little information is available about this release. A tantalising comment by Brazilian collector ‘bargainvinyl1’ on the original release’s Discogs page suggests 'Pode Acreditar' was a reaction to the Baby Consuelo and Pepeu Gomes pro-marijuana song 'O Mal é o Que Sai da Boca do Homem’, which caused controversy with Brazil's governing military dictatorship at the time. Though condemning marijuana's use, the word "baseado" (joint) is mentioned in the song, and this could be the reason behind the release being pulled by the heads of Som Livre and consequently it becoming one of the rarest releases on the label.

Whilst its back-story is not crystal clear, it is an undeniable sun-drenched, laid-back boogie groove with AOR touches by the clandestine group. Pure 80s Rio-vibes, super-catchy and an ear-worm that sticks with you throughout the day.

Deep Inspiration Show Records proudly presents Family Things Vol. 2, the second instalment of the various artist 12” series focusing on the inner circle of our global family. Assembled as always with love, the release features welcome contributions from friends and collaborators from Germany, Croatia, South Africa, USA and Scotland. A1. Our friend Jan Kincl, the Zagreb-based producer, opens the record with Daylight (You Are My), a beautiful slow-burning track that doesn’t hide a serious nod to the original ‘hi tech soul’ blueprint. In line with his previous work, the track touches on the space where techno, house and jazz collide. A2. Detroit’s Alton Miller steps up with an ear-catching remix of Daylight. Aside from being there at the dawning of house music, Alton’s subsequent work has secured his status as one of the Motor City’s finest artists. Masterful work on the keys and an infectious groove cast Daylight in a completely new context. B1. The flipside starts with Wolford Heifer, aka Ntshabeng Donald Motseo aka Gary Hattenberger, the Limpopo-born producer now based in Johannesburg. The talent behind the Dirty Analog Records label delivers the curiously-named Odd Socks, a warm and organic deep house track featuring Inner Shift Music’s Brad Peterson on flute and keyboards. B2. Closing the EP are Johannesburg’s Benklawk and Mabutana, also known as Tebogo Skhosana & Buti Messiase. Having released last year on Do It Now Recordings they now step forward here for DISR with Damage Control, a seriously deep and murky house cut that’s perfect for those hazy late-night moments.

Originally released in 2014, Nid & Sancy's fourth album 'The Cut Up Jeans Technique', is a patchwork of interwoven sound design, manic synths, and crazy samples. The couple make heavy use of cut-up vocals that are reinterpreted as synth sounds and vice versa. It's this ambiguity that draws the listener into what can only be described as a visceral spiral of warped electronics for the new age. Clocking in just under 30 minutes, early support came from 2 many Dj's who included single 'Skinny Fit' into their 'Under The Covers' tour and video which traveled the world. In 2019, although out of print, the album was discovered again, partly due to the support of hard techno artist KRTM, who included tracks and samples from the album into his sets and online mixes frequently.

Emerging from the Toronto warehouse scene, Tush is a rising electronic music act powered by Kamilah Apong and Jamie Kidd. Taking inspiration from electro funk, early disco, post-punk and '90s house; their debut album 'Fantast' embodies the rawness, vulnerability, and intimacy of the dancefloor. 'Fantast' kicks off with the slow burning 'Wavy Baby', an invitation to get close, get intimate and submit to the groove: "Vulnerability is the key to us getting to that next step of intimacy". Up next is lead single 'Chrysalis', a high octane ride through a technicolour fantasy world of heady synths and driving rhythms that propel Kamilah's voice into an erotic stratosphere. 'Don't Be Afraid' is about having the courage to love defiantly, urgently, and with intention. Driven by Jamie's infectious bass lines and FX blasts, it smoothly transforms into an uplifting gospel-infused track. Two high points of the album, 'Jessica F***' and 'Marathons', highlight Tush doing what they do best. These tracks are the sound of the warehouse scene that birthed the project in the first place and the late night jam sessions that were full of possibility pre-pandemic. Here, Tush really stretch their improvisational muscles - the interplay of raw soulful vocals, hypnotic basslines, synth pads, and heavy disco rhythms is at the core of what makes them so invigorating. 'Fantast' closes with the uplifting sunrise energy of 'My Joy', the light at the end of the tunnel. "This song is enchanted by the backing vocals of my friends and chosen family, who are my cornerstones to working through the wonderful mess that I am". Kamilah adds "The track gives me this feeling that - no matter how hard the world tries to beat it out of me - I can and I have had to work hard to cultivate my own happiness in my own sacred spaces - one of those being Tush. Ultimately, this is all I really need".

Favorite Recordings proudly presents Voiciii, the 3rd and new album by Voilaaa, an immersive dip into its Afro-Disco universe spread across 14 tracks. Needless to say you’ll find in this new LP all the ingredients that made him famous: strong dancefloor-friendly festive bangers, irresistible funky arrangements and an undeniable sense of humor and irony.

Bruno “Patchworks” Hovart, behind Voilaaa, is as often surrounded by amazing vocal featurings from previous LP’s regulars (Pat Kalla, Lass) but also new voices you may already have heard on its recent EPs (David Walters, Rama Traore, Ayuune Suule), as well as the saxophonist Boris Pokora. The LP is also an occasion to pay tributes to major artists of the African sound, such as Fela Kuti (on “Water No Get Enemy”), or Manu Dibango (“Manu Écoute Ça” and “Tenor Jam For Manu”).

Hania Rani is a pianist, composer and musician who, was born in Gdansk and splits her life between Warsaw, where she makes her home, and Berlin where she studied and often works. Her debut album 'Esja', a beguiling collection of solo piano pieces on Gondwana Records was released to international acclaim on April 5th 2019 including nominations in 5 categories in the Polish music industries very own Grammys, the Fryderyki, and winning the Discovery of the Year 2019 in the Empik chain's Bestseller Awards and the prestigious Sanki award for the most interesting new face of Polish music chosen by Polish journalists. Rani also composed the music for her first full length movie "I Never Cry" directed by Piotr Domalewski and for the play "Nora" directed by Michal Zdunik. Her song "Eden" was used as a soundtrack of a short movie by Malgorzata Szumowska for Miu Miu's movie cycle "Women's Tales" If the compositions on Esja were born out of a fascination with the piano as an instrument, then her follow-up, the expansive, cinematic, 'Home', finds Rani expanding her palate: adding vocals and subtle electronics to her music as well as being joined on some tracks by bassist Ziemowit Klimek and drummer Wojtek Warmijak. The album reunites her with recording engineers, Piotr Wieczorek and Ignacy Gruszecki (Monochrom Studio) and the tracks were again mixed again by Gijs van Klooster in his studio in Amsterdam and by Piotr Wieczorek in Warsaw ( Ombelico and Come Back Home). Home was mastered by Zino Mikorey in Berlin (known for his work on albums by artists such as Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds). For Rani, 'Home', is very much a continuation of the work she started on 'Esja', "the completion of the sentence" as she puts it. The album offers a metaphorical journey: the story of places that become our home sometimes by chance, sometimes by choice. It is the story of leaving a place that is familiar and the journey that follows it. Home opens with the fragment of the short story "Loneliness" by Bruno Schulz, which can be seen as a parable of a journey that does not necessarily mean going beyond the physical door but can signify going beyond the symbolic limits of our knowledge and imagination

Last time we heard from Giuliano Lomonte, back in June 2020, he was working in cahoots with like-minded pal and fellow Berlin resident Alexis Carbrera. Here he makes his first appearance on Half Baked Records, in the process delivering his first solo single since 2019. The standout is arguably A-side 'Activator', a tactile, tech-tinged dancefloor roller in which spoken word snippets and fluttering electronic motifs cluster around a typically chunky and shuffling groove. The Italian producer opts for a deeper and more hypnotic vibe on the deep house/tech-house fusion of 'Control Center', before reaching for starry electronics, bubbly synth-bass and loose-limbed late '90s style tech-house beats on 'Secret House'.

Human Sounds are proud to be re-releasing Tahiti 80's 2002 classic album Wallpaper for the Soul expanded with 8 bonus tracks (vinyl version only) ;

After the worldwide success of their first album Puzzle (1999), which sold over 200,000 copies and went gold in Japan, Xavier Boyer (vocals, guitars), Pedro Resende (bass), Médéric Gontier (guitars) & Sylvain Marchand (drums) reunited with producer Andy Chase to record the follow-up, Wallpaper for the Soul, in New York City. Starting in November 2001 at Stratosphere Sound, the prolific sessions gave birth to twenty tracks, twelve of which appeared on the original tracklist. The eight outtakes were compiled on the mini albums A Piece of Sunshine (2003) & Extra Pieces of Sunshine (2004). This new vinyl edition will be the first time all these songs appear together.
Almost 20 years on, WFTS is a tour de force of contemporary songwriting with obvious nods to the past somehow revisited in a timeless fashion. Tahiti 80's second effort can also be seen as an alternative and more sophisticated snapshot of an era often associated with the rebirth of rock (The White Stripes, The Strokes…). This set of songs also established them as stalwarts of the Post French Touch cannon, showcasing both their ability to write catchy songs and their knack for mélanges & experimentation. 1,000 Times or The Train are unique examples of blue-eyed soul augmented with French flair (" Prefab Sprout as produced by Thomas Bangalter " suggested Uncut which listed WFTS in their Top Ten's albums of 2003). Listen to Don't Look Below today, and ask yourself who was mixing Destiny's Child with My Bloody Valentine in 2001? Delicate numbers like Open Book or live favorite Better Days Will Come both demonstrate T80's songwriting skills and their innate sense of melancholia.
Listening back to WFTS today, one cannot help but think of it as an album recorded in a state-of-the-art fashion. All four members would typically perform together in the same room. Basic takes were printed on a 24-track analog tape machine and then bounced onto a computer for editing. A fine example of this method is the title track itself. Originally written on acoustic guitar, Wallpaper … is the result of three eight minutes synthesizer jams pieced together. The Frenchmen were keen to try out multitude of ideas and had developed a taste for experimentation. The sessions also coincide with a rich outburst of creativity from a band on top of their game after several months of touring around the world.
Another typical WFTS characteristic is Richard Hewson's orchestration. Veteran string arranger, famous for arranging The Beatles' The Long And Winding Road or writing RAH Band's '80s classic Clouds Across The Moon Hewson gave the songs a sweeping orchestral touch. Strings, Horns & woodwinds were all performed at the now defunct Olympic Studios in London. Urban Soul Orchestra, a 24-piece ensemble who played on Oasis' or Spice Girls' hits can be heard on five songs: the opening trilogy Wallpaper…, 1,000 Times and The Other Side, then on the Northern Soul revival Soul Deep and lastly on the album's closer Memories Of The Past.
Rouen's most famous four-piece, now relocated in a house on France's North West Coast, in the quiet seaside town of Étretat, added more bells & whistles and resumed production on the songs. With one last transatlantic leap during the summer of 2002, the boys flew to Portland, Oregon to attend the mixing sessions held by sound wizard Tony Lash (Elliott Smith, The Dandy Warhols…). Suggested by Sub Pop's craftsman Eric Matthews, also a guest on trumpet and keyboards, Lash would later become a major collaborator on Tahiti 80's subsequent albums.
In the meantime, Laurent Fétis, the designer behind Puzzle's iconic artwork, had started working with artist Elisabeth Arkhipoff on a set of nostalgic photographs transfigured with a soft air-bush technique. Those visuals, like their predecessors, have since become an inseparable companion to Tahiti 80's music.
Many musical fashions and flavors of the month have come and gone, but twenty years after its release, WFTS still sounds fresh and relevant. And always forward-looking, Tahiti 80 is currently wrapping up the recording of their eighth album, to be released in early 2022.

We have no clue why none of the established re-issue record labels in the world has not re-released it yet. Therefore we gladly step in and take responsibility for a proper reissue. For the B-side we chose "Bubble and Squeak" which makes it unnecessary to further search for the original vinyl record as these are the only two interesting cuts for Rare Groove fans.

It has been a long running gag at KOMPAKT that there is an adversity to our male staff having a mustache. The truth is that there are scarce few in the history of our company who have managed to get away with having a furry friend on their face. But due to the pandemic and lockdown, the staff Zoom meetings were confronted with an unprecedented snot mop overgrowth.

The solution was right under our noses. We had become entranced with a producer from Paris that has successfully managed to take the torch from the golden age of Gigolo fueled electro-pop and merge it with that signature Kompakt sexiness we crave and that we hope you hear in many of our club tracks.

He goes by the name of Captain Mustache. He has brought to Kompakt tolerance and acceptance for those who whistle with a bristle. Fred is anything but a crumb catcher and has an exemplary but short history of releases. Be it with Chicks On Speed, Correspondant, Bordello A Parigi or Helena Hauf’s Return To Disorder. And now we present this fine double header. Play Paul (on vocals) joins for the title track called “Everything” and it is just that. “Pulsions Organiques" brings a somewhat broken beat to his electro flavor saver tendencies. And an instrumental of “Everything” rounds things off for those who like it a little more lower brow.
Es ist ein alter Gag im Hause KOMPAKT, dass es eher ein Nachteil ist, wenn unsere männlichen Mitarbeiter einen Schnurrbart tragen. Die Wahrheit ist, dass es in der Geschichte unseres Unternehmens nur wenige gab, die es geschafft haben, mit so einem pelzigen Freund im Gesicht davonzukommen. Aufgrund der Pandemie und des Lockdowns sahen sich dann aber die Mitarbeiter-Zoom-Meetings mit einer noch nie dagewesenen Anzahl dieser umstrittenenen Oberlippenbehaarung konfrontiert.

Die Lösung lag jedoch, ähm, direkt vor unserer Nase. Wir hatten uns kürzlich in einen Produzenten aus Paris verguckt, der es erfolgreich geschafft hat, die Fackel des goldenen Zeitalters von Gigolo-artigen Elektro-Pop wieder aufzunehmen und das Ganze mit der charakteristischen Sexiness von KOMPAKT zu verschmelzen, nach der wir uns alle sehnen und die man hoffentlich in vielen unserer Club-Tracks hören kann.

Dieser Typ hört auf den Namen Captain Mustache und er hat dafür gesorgt, dass wir nun mehr Toleranz und Akzeptanz für diejenigen aufbringen, die mit einer kleinen Borste im Gesicht herumlaufen. Fred ist aber alles andere als ein Krümelfänger und hat eine vorbildliche, aber dennoch kurze Diskographie vorzuweisen, die von Chicks On Speed, über Correspondant und Bordello A Parigi bis zu Helena Haufs Return To Disorder reicht.

Und nun haben wir die Ehre, diese exquisite 12inch zu präsentieren. Für "Everything" gesellt sich Play Paul (am Gesang) hinzu und hält, was der Titel verspricht. "Pulsions Organiques" steuert einen leicht gebrochenen Beat zu seinen ehrenhaften Ansinnen hinzu, den guten Electro Geschmack zu retten. Ein Instrumental von "Everything" rundet die Sache für diejenigen ab, die es ein wenig ruhiger mögen.

Jochem Peteri comes drifting back into earshot with some new NWAQ tackle in tow. Beyond the plentiful reissues of his timeless earlier works, Peteri is just as productive in the here and now. Now he’s minting a new label with three pieces that embellish the NWAQ soundworld with a fresh slant. ‘Above II’ is a crystal clear beam of light strapped to a kick that trips over itself with grace and poise. It’s forthright and yet wholly untethered, a pre-echo for the anchorless expanse of ‘Above I’, which buries some heavy bass ruminations very far down in the mix. That leaves it to ‘Dume’ to come staggering out all bleary-eyed, caked in last night’s distortion and yet still exuding a cracked beauty that stands up to the first light of dawn. The artwork which adorns this record is by environment sculpting internet artist Jan-Robert Leegte. NWAQ has always stood for a kind of environmental immersion, and this new emission compounds that idea in three distinct, refreshing ways.

Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol 1 is the second release from Sampology’s new imprint. The Middle Name Dance Tracks project reflects standout live & club nights in Brisbane of recent years, where there has seen a steady cross pollination between the club and soul/jazz communities. The blurred line between these two musical worlds has delivered an array of diverse and joyful events for both artists and avid music fans.

This project is a collaborative creative effort between Sampology, Megan Christensen and Sam Stosuur. The recording process was live in nature with Megan on piano and keys, Sam Stosuur on bass/bass synth and Sampology on MPC drums and programming. Having live conga & timbale from Brisbane based Latin percussion staple Gus Cereiji glues the groove together. These sonic choices were inspired by listening to NYC early 80s disco labels, especially Prelude 12" releases, which balanced drum machine & synths as well as live studio musicians. Vocals on 'Only Joy' were recorded by Kerry Raywood. Vocals for 'Bless' come from Brisbane jazz vocalist Merinda Dias-Jayasinha. The combination of the Middle Name Dance Tracks trio and the additional Brisbane artists offers a specific music palette that’s live in essence, dancefloor in orientation, and magical in delivery.

Vol. 2 of the series by Brisbane's Middle Name Dance Band. The collaborative trio project between Sampology, Megan Christensen & Sam Stosuur was originally intended as a one off studio project, but the success of the first EP saw both a demand for live shows and a Vol. 2 EP. _

Middle Name Dance Tracks Vol. 2 features the first single 'Weekend Love Chant' which dropped end of 2019. Support from Gilles Peterson on BBC 6, and Middle Name Dance Band have recently performed atLaneway Festival and Melbourne Museum as well as a debut Australian tour. An iconically Brisbane video also accompanied the release, featuring the unmistakeable moves of Megan at beautiful early morning locations around the sunny city. _

This EP sees a progression into both mid tempo and slow jam grooves on the A side with 'Love Bite' & 'Weekend Love Chant' as well as house and Brazilian rhythms on the B side with 'Deeper Than Love' & 'Lovers Carnival'. The writing of the EP happened both in the studio and on stage throughout 2019 as part of the band's Bearded Lady venue residency in which they developed the songs in front of an ever increasing hometown crowd.

Conjunto Papa Upa returns with “Todo Parao” (“Total Shutdown”), another boundary pushing tropical smasher. Bringing you the ultimate (humourous) hymn to the pandemic over an exquisite blend of highly danceable Caribbean rhythms (zouk, cadence, kompás, guaracha) and classic synths. Backed by a deep sea dub on the flip, complete with resplendent cowbell(!), timbales and Wurlitzer solos. Another stepping stone that showcases yet another angle of the unique and radical production style of Alex Figueira. Drop this 45 at your next virtual party and watch everybody leave their computers in a desperate search of a dancing partner.

Conjunto Papa Upa is the Afro Caribbean centered solo project of Figueira, backed live bysome of the best musicians from Amsterdam’s Latin and free jazz scenes. Their debut LP was recently released on legendary American indie label Names You Can Trust. Figueira is also known for his percussive work on tropical psych power trio Fumaça Preta or his regular live incursions with Amsterdam’s turkish psych folk powerhouse, Altin Gun.

Having spent the whole night working on the melodic structure of the song, Figueira took a break to take advantage of the different time zones and check on his dad in Venezuela, and ask how the pandemic was unfolding there. His answer: “Todo Parao” (“Total Shutdown”). The same two words he had used multiple times before, this time pronounced in a hilarious Rum-infused way, giving Alex an unexpected flush of inspiration in the form of an instant infectious chorus. He excused himself and immediately got locked back in the studio. The result is this incredibly catchy tune, displaying the optimistic approach of a boyfriend to the chaos, uncertainty and worrying of his girlfriend about the pandemic, presenting her with his own lascivious lockdown plan for the two, declaring at a certain moment: “while everyone is lamenting, you and I are going to enjoy”.

In the musical side, rhythms from Haiti, Guadaloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico and Cuba are unscrupulously mixed with the most diverse and strikking elements: strident cowbells that evoke the toughest salsa of 70's New York, harmonized guitars evidencing the inconfesable influence of 80’s heavy metal, a delicate Wurlitzer piano reminiscent of Black America’s greatest Soul ballads, Casio keyboards rescued from a child’s toy cabinet and a whole plethora of half-broken classic Synths, to create an equally irresistible and unclassifiable hybrid.

On the flip side, Part 2 opens with a prominent dose of the lead guitar that appeared briefly on the A side, working as a preamble to an instrumentalist frenzy that is not concerned about displaying technique. Its mere intention is to tell you the rest of the story without using words. A few bars into the song, the first gear shifts with a monumental solo given by the least probable of all “soloist” instruments: the cowbell (!). After it, a crispy Timbal crashes the party, making a statement out of its only appearance in the entire recording. Finally, the longed-for turn of the melodious Wurlitzer, who left everybody craving for more on the other side of the record, giving the modest keyboard skills of Figueira an imposing pentatonic virtue.
