Last time we heard from Giuliano Lomonte, back in June 2020, he was working in cahoots with like-minded pal and fellow Berlin resident Alexis Carbrera. Here he makes his first appearance on Half Baked Records, in the process delivering his first solo single since 2019. The standout is arguably A-side 'Activator', a tactile, tech-tinged dancefloor roller in which spoken word snippets and fluttering electronic motifs cluster around a typically chunky and shuffling groove. The Italian producer opts for a deeper and more hypnotic vibe on the deep house/tech-house fusion of 'Control Center', before reaching for starry electronics, bubbly synth-bass and loose-limbed late '90s style tech-house beats on 'Secret House'.

Giuliano Lomonte hails from Andria in the south of Italy, though a healthy passion for music has long coaxed him out its gorgeous Mediterranean climes. As a clubber around Europe, he nurtured a love of dance music—particularly deep, techy, hypnotic, extended cuts pressed to vinyl. It's the sound he mines as a DJ, and you can regularly hear him teasing out the groove at Berlin clubs like Club der Visionaere and Hoppetosse. Now, via Sammy Dee's Ultrastretch, you can hear Lomonte's musical vision in its purest form. His first 12-inch features a pair of originals sure to fit perfectly in his bag—and we think they'll make a worthy addition to yours as well. "Break It Down" marries buoyant live drumming to a deep bass pulse and expertly sculpted electronic flourishes. In its minimalism and form, it's unmistakably techno, though its light touch and organic feel make it a sure bet for early-morning house sets as well. "Love Me High" has a similar drive but with the added effervescence of subtle, bubbling melody. Fumiya Tanaka, a master of abstract house and a regular at Sammy and Zip's Get Perlonized sessions, strips "Love Me High" down to its essence: rhythms tangle, voices mutter, vibes emanate. It caps an auspicious debut from an artist who lives and breathes the stuff, on a label where he couldn't be more at home.

Fresh off the back of his superb new album, Voigtmann is back with an equally juicy new 12" on Half Baked, a party crew with which he has a long association. His intricate minimal style is laid bare here from the off with 'Aesthetic Solutions' offering up a colourful mix of trippy sound designs and sci-fi moods over slick tech drum programming. 'California Cruise Control' gets deeper, with a more prominent squelchy bassline taking centre stage. 'Underexposure' then ups the ante with a more cosmic and driving techno sound and last of all is 'Areola 51', another one built from silky loops and futuristic synths over crisp tech house beats.

The always tasteful Half Baked crew looks to one of their own for this fresh slice of delicious minimal. Sam Bangura was a new young resident for the party back in 2018 and since then has really honed his own sound. It's laid bare here across four fine cuts, with opener 'Range Finder' serving up bristling drum machine grooves and cheeky basslines overlaid with cosmic chords. 'Axel's Limp' is a brilliantly vibrant melodic overload with scintillating drums and plenty of neon colours. 'Bugbear' gets more gritty with a standout bassline powering forwards rugged tech house and 'How Are U Feeling?' then gets spaced out and slick.

Margaret Dygas may be based in Berlin but her unique sound can't be tied down to any one city or scene, as she proves on her latest 12" across three tracks for the consistently exciting Half Baked label. Not that there's anything half done here, of course, with A-side tune 'Butterfly Effect' a prime slice of groovy. resonant techno that's understated and restrained enough to gain comparisons to Jaydee's 'Plastic Dreams' classic. 'CC Is 33' is warmer, with nicely slidy, jazzy organ chords and itchy technofunk rhythms, with the most minimal of the three tracks, the static-infused, atmospheric 'Subliminal 20A7', coming last but by no means least. A great showcase for a great, original talent.

Since launching a few years back, Half Baked Records has consistently served up high quality fare from a mixture of underground heroes and rising stars. We'd put Luca Piermattei in the latter category, even though he's been releasing music for a few years and recently featured on Rawax. Memories of a Wonderful City is genuinely excellent, with the Italian doing a good job in combining vintage synth and drum machine sounds in a fresh and ear-pleasing way. Choose between the pleasingly bouncy, sci-fi-fired deep house dreaminess of 'Galaxy', the sleazy late-night brilliance of 'Vintage Style' (which incidentally features a frankly filthy acid bassline), the bustling sweatiness of extra-percussive opener 'Busy Life' and the undulating, analogue-heavy jazz-funk-goes-house hustle of '80's Sound'.

Robin infuses power to his tracks via a no compromise formula on drums; tight old school rhythms that are then cleverly fused with expert sound design and minimalist aesthetic, showing a lot of maturity in his productions skills. The A1, Five Majors, is a perfect example of this balance, a dramatic club twister that has all the ingredients to rock a dancefloor, while preserving a touch of elegance. Having been part of the deep house movement since its earliest age, djing since 1987 and having released on labels such as UMM or Traxx Underground among many others, we can consider Enrico as one of the European founders of the deep house movement. His signature sound is raw, punchy and deep; a pure analog wave that immediately floods the dancefloor with good energy and euphoria. HB004 is no different. A three tracker sporting the Italian’s recipe for House: gangsta basses, rolling kicks, playful vocals and jazzy synth stabs. HB004 marks a detachment from the micro-house aesthetics of the first three releases, drifting towards an old school sound, while preserving the standard of quality associated with the Half Baked name.
