Berlin Atonal Recordings is happy to announce two forthcoming releases, both featuring live cuts from two of the most talked about performances at the 2015 edition of the festival. Synthesiser genius Max Loderbauer (NSI, Sun Electric, Vilod, Moritz von Oswald Trio) and techno experimentalist Jacek Sienkiewicz (Recognition) combined for a stunning live show on the opening night of festival 2015. Blending harmonic drones and almost unrecognizably distended vocal samples with adroitly weighted melodic passages, this collaboration was a masterclass in expertly crafted ambient music from two of the genres' leading exponents. Two passages from this set have been mastered and cut to vinyl in a special 12" with artwork by Pedro Maia based on his visuals for the show.

Long Island's Air only made one album. As solitary statements go, it’s exceptional. Divinely elevated by Googie Coppola’s beautiful voice, this transcendent masterpiece of soulful jazz-rock fusion has become increasingly tricky to track down. 45 years on from its initial release, Be With Records finally make it available again on vinyl.

The highlights are many and memorable. From the irresistible groove of “Mr. Man” to the heavenly piano vocal of “Jail Cell”; from the funk-fuelled brass breaks in “Man Is Free” to the haunting, unforgettable “Sister Bessie”, it is easy to understand why this record has been long revered amongst aficionados.

An exquisite slice of psychedelic jazz-funk, Funk Factory was criminally overlooked upon release but became a crate-diggers classic over time. Yes, the LP is most famous for containing the peerless dusty groove of "Rien Ne Va Plus", heavily lifted by the Beastie Boys for their Paul's Boutique standout "Car Thief". Yes, you'd be correct to assume said gem is worthy of the price of admission alone. Yet, to those in the know, Funk Factory represents so much more than a Dust Brothers sample-source. Indeed, the entire album represents a space-aged opus, featuring tripped-out keys, tight drums and baked synths; all laced by Urszula Dudziak's ethereal vocals drifting around the exceptional instrumentation. Funk Factory were boldly led by brilliant Polish violinist and saxophonist Michal Urbaniak and vocalist Dudziak. Two additional, accomplished Polish musicians were involved: virtuoso keyboardist Wlodek Gulgowski and singer Bernard Kafka, founder and leader of great Polish vocal group Novi Singers. To augment this solid foundation, a sensational American rhythm section was assembled, with bassists Anthony Jackson and Tony Levin, drummers Steve Gadd and Gerald Brown and guitarists Barry Finnerty and John Abercrombie. Legend has it that Urbaniak created this seminal record in response to his American colleagues' claims that Eastern European musicians were not "funky". Funk Factory demonstrates that Urbaniak and his cohorts could play funk as well as any American musician. As sophisticated and multi-layered as the best of the genre, it deserves to be as canonical as the greatest works of Herbie Hancock and George Duke. Accomplished and utterly unique, this intoxicating blend of crack musicians created an irresistibly heady dose of transportive funk that sounds every bit as vital today as it would have in 1975. Original copies are prohibitively expensive so this officially licensed 180g version enables a wider audience to now discover its genius. Dovetailing neatly with the recent interest in forgotten Eastern European grooves, this timely release of a true lost treasure is sure to be one of the year's essential vinyl reissues.

Electrica Salsa - Revisited
30 years later - remixes by Roman Flügel and Henrik Schwarz
France, Italy, Austria, Germany - quite precisely thirty years ago, one electronic track turned the European music charts upside down: "Electrica Salsa" by the Frankfurt project OFF - a collective producing their tracks at Master Music Studio. The founders of "Organisation For Fun" were no underdogs: Michael Münzing and Luca Anzilotti would go on as duo SNAP! And write global hits like "The Power" or "Rhythm Is A Dancer", writing pop history. And the third member of OFF was then 21-year-old Sven Väth, today one the most notorious international DJs. "Michael and Luca were the masters of equipment, responsible for the mixing desk and the recording tape we used to make the master tapes. I was the one providing song ideas, grooves and bringing a good mood to the studio."
In the summer of 1986, House Music was mainly a thing at black Clubs in Chicago. Detroit Techno (and the Berlin scene) was still in the making. "Electrica Salsa" prompted a new feel in pop culture, adopting modern techniques like the use of sound samples driven by a unique beat, creating what would be called Balearic-Fusion. It included everything from digital Underground up to the Love Parade. Frankfurt and the Rhein-Main area experienced an era of departure and pioneering spirit. "There were really great sound systems at clubs and the Dorian Gray at Frankfurt Airport was one of the best in the country. They didn't have closing hours; people would party on until midday. They came from all over Germany. The area produced a great number of projects: Moskwa TV, Bigod 21,16 Bit, Off, Moses P, Abfahrt, Dance to Trance, Snap, PCP, Earth Nation - to name just a few."
"Around the turn of the year 1985/86 we were quite productive getting the maximum out of our new studio. All three of us were working as DJs on a regular basis and we got together to elaborate our ideas for new stuff", Sven Väth remembers. "The predecessor project had been named 16 Bit, it was Michael's and Luca's baby. OFF happened quite naturally as we were trying out some things at the studio. We had a concrete 4/4 bass drum playing and the other two were experimenting on the bass. So I went over to the microphone and tried out some word and syllable sounds. Somehow my lips formed "Electrica Salsa" and then "Ba Ba Ba". It got everything started; ideas just flowed after that. So we added Trumpets and Timbales that I recorded live. I didn't really know anything about percussion but I loved playing around with rhythms. So I got myself a high-end professional percussion set. The thick "boom" sound on the other hand is a sample from a Mercedes S 500 door being slammed!"
The spontaneous session produced a powerfully anarchic song mastered on a 24-track tape that got all three musicians euphoric. "I was most happy about the great success we had with 'Electrica Salsa' in Ibiza and Italy, where we actually made number one," Väth recollects. "Ibiza was the greatest source of inspiration. We flew down there every year in the eighties; the Island really had a strong influence on us with its eclectic sounds at the times. The Balearic Sound was a mix of Italo Disco, Wave, Funk and African Percussion. We wanted to become part of it - and I still am today! Thirty years on that fire is still glowing and that's the reason why we released new mixes: They are a gift to my fans that have been accompanying me for such a long time."
The track "Electrica Salsa" is a cornerstone of Techno history, receiving a 2016 makeover so its successor generation gets something of its own to dance on. "Roman Flügel is a friend and estimated colleague of mine and he created a really smart version of the track. I'm convinced that many people will be surprised by his remix. Henrik Schwarz on the other hand actually invited a brass combo to the studio and recorded them with strings and latin bass which makes a great modern version;" as Väth describes the 2016 studio productions.

Väth concludes: "I can only add that I am extremely happy to have been part of this project. It's a classic, after all!"

Following up on his exceptional 12" debut Numb (Figure 73) earlier this year, Seatoc Mass delivers another EP of finely tuned and highly diversified techno deep space explorations.
Starting on an atmospheric note, Cipher's intricate melody winchingly twists its way under your skin while airy breakbeats faintly hint at the producer's UK roots. In contrasting fashion the bleep- driven Lost Lakes sticks to its metronomic stomp, making for a simple yet utterly effective tool. Choral howls and detuned synths merge on Transform for a gentle yet trance-inducing introduction to the flipside. Emotive highlight Rain then sees the Manchester producer sonically recreate a thundering storm, complete with flashing strokes of lightning and a downpour of celestial scale. The breakbeat returns on closer Flying Buttress, albeit now at much faster tempo, exploring the common ground between futuristic grime and techno.
Blending all these different styles and their distinctive tropes in a coherent statement is a feat not easily accomplished. Yet here Seatoc Mass pulls it off again, developing further the confines of both his personal and the label's sound.

Whether you’re floating free to antipodean ambience or toasting the sunset with a Baltic beauty,
you can always count on Growing Bin to take you someplace new for a while. Swapping bucolic
Poland for the buzz of the Big Apple, the Hamburg imprint reaches a magnificent seven in the
company of synth-pop dreamer Shy Layers (JD Walsh to his mum) and his sublime self titled
debut. Over the course of ten emotional pop serenades, the New York musician recalls lost days
sofa surfing to the lounge electronica of Air, Mellow and early Phoenix or the swooning lo-fi
psychedelia of a pre-MD Simian.
Shy Layers welcomes us aboard with the shimmering pads and soothing soft synths of ‘Black &
White’, a drifting soundtrack to a John Hughes-directed episode of ‘In The Night Garden’. From
there we swerve into the wistful synth-pop of ‘Famous Faces’, locking into the rattling Tears For
Fears groove while the West Coast guitar licks and vocoder vocals float off into the distance.
‘You Won’t Find Me’ shuffles through afro-tronic keyboard lines, Beta Band breakbeats and loose
funk guitar before the sweltering ‘Stabilized Waves’ dips a toe in the Med, swaying gently to the
fluid bass, acoustic strumming and cascading electric guitar. Swapping continents to close the
A-side, ‘Too Far Out’ finds Walsh working highlife guitars and fuzzy sanza sequences into a piece of perfect off-kilter pop. The B-side begins in glitchy fashion with the flying hats and seesaw
synths of ‘Holding It Back’, before ‘Playing The Game’ offers sprinklers over summer lawns, dub
fx, jangling guitars and cooing vocals. The afrobeat influence shines through once again on the
rhythmic ‘Bees & Bamboo’ before ‘SEG’ sees Shy Layers don Mario’s Red Wing cap for a chip-set
safari through the bright blue sky. Playing us out with the same cinematic splendour with which
we began, Walsh conjures a woozy, sun-dappled mood for the sumptuous ‘1977’.
Fusing French pop, glistening Americana, 80s AOR and afrobeat into a hazy vision of balmy mornings, long evenings and lazy days, Shy Layers has served up the soundtrack to your summer.

They say all good things comes in threes, and with the marking of Nachtbraker's 3rd release for Heist, we can confirm this universal truth once again. Maurits Verwoerd comes back to Heist with more dancefloor muscle than ever before, and shows us great development of his sound: while keeping his unconventional drum patterns and love for the deeper side of house, he adds some filtered funk flavor along the way.
'Gotta act to react' drives on a saturated bassline, a hypnotizing guitar lick and some seriously loose hi-hats, but really delivers once those hard to place filtered hits come in. 'Pollo con Pollo' is potentially Maurits' most clear attempt at a straightforward groove, with a lovely dreamy guitar loop running throughout the track. Add his loose sense of arrangement and changeovers, and it's still anything but straightforward. The B- side gets nice and weird with 2 versions of Intermezz(l)ow, the one being a lovely textured interlude and the other a rough drum workout built around the same theme.
When we asked Maurits who he wanted to have as a remixer, he suggested he'd do a remix himself. We knew better than to argue with him, and since he is who he is, we're not entirely surprised he came up with a great dubbed out acid-tinged flip of 'Gotta act to react'. This EP really shows Nachtbraker's steady rise and will most likely take him out of the shadows he so enjoys, into headline territory and we're glad to support him in this journey.

Matthew Dear's Audion project stands proudly at the intersection between art and hedonism,
realised over a decade long dedication to powerful and relevant dance music. Growing out of the vibrant DIY Detroit underground, Audion and his contemporaries were free to feed off the energy reverberating from UK and European dancefloors, but singular in their desire to create their own sound and spirit. An Audion release is techno in it's purest sense - whether it's pushing the bombastic limits, spinning the dancefloor out of control or elegantly toying with just a few sonic elements.

'Alpha' is Audion's first artist album in 10 years and comes at the end of a period of fevered activity. The collective body of work standing as a marker in time and a defining moment in the life of the artist. Drowning out the noise of the outside world, 'Alpha' was a puzzle pieced together sonically in the shadows and wildly brought to life in a matter of weeks. The artwork for 'Alpha' has again been realised by Will Calcutt, Dear's long time collaborator, who has a visual plan for the music that matches the sonic vision, completing the final critical piece of the puzzle.

Over the past 20 years, genevan duo SINNER DC has built a solid yet discreet reputation on the international electronic music scene. Their ethereal intergalactic yet catchy melodies, full on emotions and melancholy, became throughout the years the band's trademark.

Co-published by the prestigious Museum of Ethnography of Geneva and swiss renowned Mental Groove Records, this first album entitled MEG/CDG inaugurates a new series of CDs devoted to contemporary compositions sourced from the monumental audio archives of the Museum (read below*).

MEG / CDG's backbone contains music from Romania, Niger and southern United States, from the mid 30's to the early 50's that the genevan duo Sinner selected while browsing the museum database .

MEG / CDG is a kaleidoscopic album and a scenic trip - the title of the album and the songs are of IATA airport codes and explores the limits of the panoramic vision of the duo through hypnotic landscapes and imaginary places.

Sinner DC will next deliver a new album entitled "Maps" co writtent with Pete Kember, legendary founder of the influential late 80's psychedelic band Spacemen 3 and most recently producer for Panda Bear and Mgmt.

The Museum of Ethnography of Geneva and Mental Groove have already planned the follow up with french Julien Perez (Dirty/Barclay) and canadian Jeremy Young (Sontag Shogun)
