Over the course of four EPs for Numbers and creation of his own label ‘Total Fantasy’, Deadboy has charted his own path far beyond the deep black space of mediocrity with previous records ‘If U Want Me’, ‘Here’ & ‘BLAQUEWERK’. On ‘Return’ Deadboy journeys further into uncharted territories, taking his music to the darkest recesses of disco and extraterrestrial synth-werk. The opening track ‘Return’ finds the London-based producer taking cues from the likes of Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze with a gentle ambient opener that unwraps to reveal a beautiful and moving track. ‘Des Niles’ is a shimmering disco track built around an 80’s boogie bassline, plus those killer Deadboy vocal chop-ups that take us even deeper into the producer’s nighttime world. Samples are worked to within an inch of their life on the floor-ready ‘YHVH’, whilst punchy bass and synth stabs take care of the rest. Things then move swiftly on to ‘Life Code’, with the Deadboy once again notching the tempo down and letting the track’s wistful oriental melodies ride out into the dark. Return has already been praised by Pitchfork, FACT, XLR8R, Pigeons & Planes and Dummy and is accompanied by an ethereal short film inspired by the title track, created and directed by Thomas Traum and viewable here.

London staple Deadboy returns for the first time since 2011’s HERE, releasing new four track EP ‘BLAQUEWERK’ on 25th March. The release is the first of a set of many to shortly be announced, joining festival Pleasure Principle to form part of our 10th anniversary in 2013. The record’s opener ‘On Your Mind’ sees Deadboy swapping out divas and using his own plaintive vocals for the first time, within a 7 minute late night house exploration. Perpetually building analogue snare rolls and tape fuzzed basslines marry with a tense breakdown, reminiscent of his epic ‘Wish U Were Here’ and an 80’s touch that pushes the track into the same realms occupied by Chicago’s own pioneers of dancefloor melancholia, Virgo. ‘Geek’d Up’ pushes raw and direct with a heavy kick and dramatic piano stabs showing just how killer House music can be with only a few simple tools. ‘Black Reign’, previewed on Jackmaster’s Radio 1 show, experiments with the darker side of Garage – claustrophobic and nightmarish, an antidote to the recent charting hybrids. The EP’s closer ‘Nova’ is a play on Deadboy’s formative years in South London – mournful chords, tuned 808 basslines and precision crafted breaks bring to mind the pioneering sounds of early Drum & Bass producers Foul Play, with a deeper and more feminine sound.

The proposition is a simple one. It was a 2009 when Julio Bashmore first remixed ‘Heartbreaker’ from Deadboy’s classic first release - the ‘U Cheated’ EP on Well Rounded. He remoulded the garage template of the original into something more immediate, replacing the swung off-beats of the original with driving forward-rhythms and a clarity of purpose that takes absolutely nothing away from the musical impact of the original. This circulated on MP3 and we smiled and danced. Unexpectedly, in 2010 JB returned to ‘Heartbreaker’ for a different interpretation. This time around a more haunting approach was the order of the day with cross-fading strings creating a soulful, otherworldly atmosphere. The drop this time also swapped sub bass for punchy 808s. A tantalising further alternative that pointed the way to this vinyl release. Back 2 back timeless brilliance for the dancefloor on our favourite format. Get stuck in.

Inspired as much by glam R&B as he is UK garage and dancehall, Deadboy returns to Numbers with HERE - a three track EP that veers ably from his own brand of stylistic, woozy dancefloor heartache to deep gilded disco on the 8 minute plus opener, ‘Wish U Were Here.’ Still chopping vocals and twisting them into his gloriously bittersweet fragmented shapes, this opener finds him playing with his evolutions, suitably adding and subtracting elements, through lush breakdowns, to keep the stomping pace at a constant whilst his bassline bubbles up and down the octaves.
