The eclecticism of the laberl knows no boundries, and so it's fitting to end the year with a killer EP from Modini.
A collaborative project between techno visionary, Neil Landstrumm, and fellow Scottish producer, Hostage, Modini plunder the deeper shades of techno and electro music, bringing with them years of musical nouse for labels like Peacefrog, Tresor, Origami Sound and Nightshifters. Previous Modini releases have appeared on the Dixon Avenue Basement Jams imprint.
'The Answer (Version)' touches on the classic side of electro, with the infectious "how do you get to sleep at night" vocal hook rolling over incessant bleeps and chugging 4x4 beats, coming over like a pitched down Relief Records cut for the modern age. Its Original Mix makes fine use of broken beats, twisting and loosening the other version whilst retaining the energy of the original.
The impressively titled 'Impressive Pineapple' ratchets up the tempo, rolling beats and head scrambling bleep-work tussles with a hefty bass line and choppy vocals. Final cut 'Saluting Magpies' features more bass line madness and drilling drums, imaginatively off the wall samples jab in between the spaces and we're shown a masterclass in forward thinking dance music from the Modini team.

At the very coalface of the UK rave/breakbeat/techno/call it what you like scene since the 1990s, Jerome Hill is something of a hidden treasure amongst the plethora of DJs and producers to have dropped both bangers and bloopers over the ensuing three decades. With minimum of fuss and fanfare, Hill has steered record labels like Super Rhythm Trax, Don’t, Fat Hop and Hornsey Hardcore to revered acclaim, as well as firing out a consistent stream of releases for imprints such as Matthew Herbert’s Accidental Jr, Exalt Records, and I Love Acid, to name but a few. Surprisingly, ‘Flow Mechanics’ is Hill’s debut album after a production career that kicked off in 1998 as one half of Groove Asylum. And its collection of unabashed acid and rave bangers is a perfect fit for the Hypercolour label, whose personnel over the last few years has included Luke Vibert, DMX Krew, Shelley Parker and Gary Gritness. Tracks produced directly for club play; the album features 8 cuts destined to fit in cross-genre sets. With pumping electro cuts such as ‘Deafening Lull’ and ‘Knob Jitter’, four to the floor acid stompers like ‘Walk The Plank’, the mutant garage of ‘Brought Up Badly’ and the house groover ‘Stax Had The Funk’, ‘Flow Mechanics’ is a joyous romp through rave’s sound palette, replete with playful samples and skits (featured on the vinyl LP version), and a mischievous demeanour that affords the listener an lively album that doesn’t take itself too seriously. ‘Flow Mechanics’ by Jerome Hill is available from 3rd March 2023 on Hypercolour.

and emotive house music, largely released on the influential Playhouse label, but of late has seen him release
singles for Karat and Tardis Records, as well as his very own Another Picture label.
Fans of Losoul won’t be disappointed, as a diverse yet utterly familiar sound aesthetic pours out over the album’s
seven tracks in his own inimitable style. The jazzy broken beats of “Gold Tooth” shine with their micro-sample
chops, whilst “Mean Time” is a dense and dubby slow stomp, teasing the drums with space echo and injecting
sparse bass work where it matters. Inventive, spongy house grooves are delivered on “Boppin Lower” and
“Square Down Smoother” whilst the album closer, “Lava In You” is a master class in ambient sonics and
shimmering keys over a lo-fi swinging groove.

Zaps drive the rhythm forward while rushing cymbals push the groove and weld everything together to absolute unity. Do you know what time it is? It's debut o'clock. Emitting his first material for Pampa, it's &ME - craftsman of all things deep and sturdy, at the same time connoisseur of emotive touch and virtuoso of sure instincts, one of the scene's central characters for a good amount of years now and one of the main figures of Berlin's Keinemusik-crew. The man has been hitting the bulls eye of public perception several times in the past, meeting everything it takes to get a crowd going with an intent on the detail when it comes to his arrangements and sound. These new two cuts seem nothing less than the essence of his abilities.
There is "In Your Eyes", the name lending A side to this EP, showcasing a rather pensive mood. It's just a few bars for the compound of kickdrum, tuned hi-hat tambourine and shimmering background noise until the first chords of an improvised piano-piece are tenderly laid upon the beat. Add a synth-motive coming back and forth and you'll have the main ingredients to this - in every sense of the word - floor-moving tune. Accordingly, the arrangement won't aim for an all too obvious sensationalism and rather opts for a flowing and intertwining call and response of its elements, ultimately resulting in a staggering impact anyway.
In comparison, "As Above So Below" on the flipside is adding a fair amount of emphasis. It unfolds in a dry and dense sounding beat-architecture that's suspense-packed with shaker sounds and subtextual field recordings. Most certainly, a slip-proof ground for this tune's centre-piece, a scale-riding synthbass sparking an almost anthemic trigger for floor-ecstasy. While details like subtle reverberating tapping and sparkling ambient textures sound like recorded deep down in a dripstone cave, the overall energetic layout pushes relentlessly to the heights of peaktime-grandeur. There you have it: "As Above So Below" - this tune works on every level.

Parallelle join forces with Nicolas Masseyeff once again for ‘Renegade’ on Crosstown Rebels, featuring a remix from Adam Ten & Mita Gami. Collaborating previously on DGTL, having known each other for years, Dutch brother duo Parallelle and France’s Nicolas Masseyeff have created a partnership within the studio that clicks. Parallelle are multi-instrumentalists, composers, producers, and Klassified Records owners with a hybrid sound that mixes up electronica, electro-jazz and underground house, while Masseyeff is equally accomplished and draws on minimalism, jazz, new wave, Detroit and Chicago when crafting his signature sound on the likes of Systematic Recordings and Diversions Music. London trio Vondelpark have received quite some notable accolades for their debut full-length album Seabed, released earlier this year on R&S Records. The BBC compared their dreamy sound to The xx, describing the song "California Analog Dream" as "exemplary electronic pop, tracing dance and RnB patterns but rarely running over them in anything permanent." Now DJ Koze calls upon Robag Wruhme's magic touch to bring the band's hushed tones out of the bedroom and onto the dancefloor for this new Pampa Records 12". With "Moppa Habax NB", our beloved Robag takes certain elements of the original-most notably the bittersweet vocals and gentle guitar strumming-and weaves them around a functional house stomp. The dusky feeling is still there, but with an ultraviolet sheen and those quirky flourishes that have become trademarks of both Mr. Wruhme and the Pampa label. Flipping the record over, we hear Robag shift Vondelpark's pop tune further into dubbed-out DJ tool territory with "Habay Latoff NB", placing it atop a hand-cranked mechanical pulse that's more tech than house. The vocals are reduced to a mere atmospheric aspect, letting Robag's buzzing and clattering do the talking, as the underlying drawn-out melodic phrases breeze past, with plenty of auditory curveballs to make your ears smile.
