Jori Hulkkonen - 7 Strange, 7 Faith (Live Version)
Limited edition remastered, originally released on F Communications 2004. A beautiful release for the French label here provided by a man that very rarely puts a foot wrong. - RA review (4.5/5)
The brilliant Jori Hulkkonen returns to the French based F Communications to help the label celebrate 10 years in this volatile industry by gracing them with 2 original productions of his own in his A Letter From Cardassia EP. Expect trademark quality house that Jori has become famously known for in his years of producing.
First up on the EP is Fermi Paradox. Retro at its finest, the track features some very nice crisp drum patterns and a bouncy baseline to get very excited about. As the track builds, the baseline forms into a bouncing retro synths, accompanies by fantastically produced drums and percussion. Funky house with a electro and techy edge, it really must be heard to understand the appeal!
On the flip is the Live Version of 7 Strange, 7 Faith. The beats are quirky, and the baselines bouncy in this production that is just as impressive as the tasty a-side. A brilliant groove is created by the low end sounds, and also by the beautiful string patterns that ride the track for the majority of the record. A quirky vocal line doesn’t harm its allure in a track that increases in emotion as it progresses.
A beautiful release for the French label here provided by a man that very rarely puts a foot wrong.

Jori Hulkkonen, - Man From Earth feat. Jerry Valuri
Jori Hulkkonen loves his vintage synths - indeed he's a conductor of the world's first Acid Symphony Orchestra, comprised of 11 mad/brilliant Scandinavians armed with dinner suits and Roland TB-303s. It therefore comes as little surprise that "Man From Earth", the Finnish producer's tenth studio album, has its fair share of acid house stylings. It's at once moody and melodic, with Hulkkonen deftly using his machines to produce ethereal beats one minute and storming dance floor fodder the next. Some of these tracks have been lurking in the recesses of Jori's collection of nearly 20 years, some are more recent productions. And despite - or because - of this the album maintains an incredibly cohesive, mature feel. The slow
burning growl in "Dancerous" is one of the album's highlights, as are Jerry Valuri's vocals on "I am Dead" and "Man From Earth". Elsewhere Turbo boss Tiga chips in witha a vocal cameo on "Undercover" under his alias as the Dove. The vocals on that track - "undercover as a music man, I bide my time and plan, I have a greater calling" - could be quite easily an ode to Jori Hulkkonen, who often boasts about a stellar career in which he "has never become popular", thus allowing him to work unencumbered by the strains of stardom. The quality of this album suggests he'll be lucky if he remains "undercover" for much longer. (Juno) From this unsung Finnish virtuoso with nearly two decades of electronic production experience comes a gorgeous, dark, exhilarating 10th artist LP, replete with masterfully nuanced, soulful sounds coaxed from soulless vintage analog synths, thundering 808 beats, gripping vocal accompaniments from Jerry Valuri and Villa Nah, and a cameo by Tiga to boot. This is easily among the best electronic releases of the year (Montreal Mirror) Jori Hulkkonen‘s "Man From Earth" opens with a lowcutoff synth rambling anxiously over a filtered-out rhythm section. Striving towards resolution, the low melody finds harmony as the the backbeat emerges. The song, ‚I Am Dead‘, is a haunting slow banger driven by the tension in Jerry Valuri‘s positively morose vocals. The interaction that these emotions create - that of the aggressive overcoming the melancholic - is one that plays out throughout much of the album. Thus the more aggressive tracks, like ‚Dancerous‘, give way to the more ecstatic tracks, such as ‚The Other Side of Time‘, which in turn resolve again in to the morose tracks, such as ‚Re: Last Year‘. Ultimately the cycle is broken on the selfreflective, yet upbeat, ‚Man From Earth‘, which emotes a fleeting dream-like state. (Bangers & Trash)

giorgio luceri - "Love Is A Storm" (Jenifa Mayanja remix)
Fly By Night Music welcomes Giorgio Luceri back to it ranks for a cool dose of insightful analog house trax, this time deploying Bu-Mako Recordings' boss Jenifa Mayanja to share her dreamy vision of Luceri's 'Love Is A Storm'. 'Moonlife Theatre' starts out feeling like it's headed into new age territory before it picks up its moody soul and heads deep. Rolling tribal percussion teamed with an intense low end drive the rhythm section relentlessly, whilst an array of enlightened pads and keys fulfil the path deep into psychedelia... On 'AMSR' Giorgio hopes to gets the hairs standing on the back of your neck as a big resonant bassline jacks your body beneath the classic machine snare crack and shifting four to the floor grooves. Luceri signs things off again with some proto digital synthesis and paints his mark on your soul. With 'Love Is A Storm' Luceri cools down the pace a touch, dusting off his Korg M1, he's preparing you for a reflective trip through his shared conciousness. He provides us with a rich journey deep in lush pads, piano keys and fitted out with authentic storm FX to truly fix the vibe. A real dancefloor hypnotiser! Jenifa Mayanja's fantastic Piano mix takes 'Love Is A Storm' into full on dream house territory, channelling the sounds of Don Carlos and Italo-House. Bringing forth the keys to the melodic standpoint she crafts a lighter gem perfect for the present sunnier climes!

cole medina - "Big Pimpin'"
Cole Medina turns up the disco heat in this latest release from FBNM, kicking things off with Tropical Funk, a pumped up instrumental disco odyssey ala Mike Theodore's Cosmic Wind. Fused with a sequenced bass groove and littered with funky percussive rhythms, brass flutters and stabs, he successfully paints a modern portrait of some classic moon boogie! Bristolian newcomer Admin nudges up the pitch fader on his Tropical Funk remix edging the track further into house territory. He extends the bass and percussive rhythm sections retaining it's disco roots and perfects his version with a chunky acidic bassline breakdown that will really work your woofers. Heading up the B side is Make Your Body Move, an up tempo electro boogie track reminiscent of the best Midnight Star, Complete with a vocoded chorus and male/female vocal trades! With early support from some of the edit scenes biggest players already, this plodding beast will not fail to do as intended! Finally Cole brings us the soundtrack to the baddest bank heist that ever went down, the big one, the Grand Union Depository! Taking his samples from some rather obscure late 70s cosmic disco (clues to the track have already been mentioned), he works some real magic transforming them into Big Pimpin', a heavy hitting slow mo funk groove ready to make you feel just like the meanest son of a gun that you really are...

Continuing to go about their considered house business, Fly By Night Music turns once again to established underground head Andy Ash for its next EP. The Liverpool man, previously associated with labels like Black Key and Scenery as well as having released on this label in 2012, serves up three tracks of well-rooted, beautifully analogue sounding house that's rich with both musicality and physicality. Three more killer tracks from Andy Ash, then, that whilst paying heed to house music's long heritage also look to the future in their serene synth patterns and proud production techniques.
