Archetypal Detroit electro techno taken to the next level by Mr Bernardi on Burek sub label Barba. Barba shows its nasty side after the first and very nice and sweet LD Nero release. Bernardi delivers a double album worth of ideas, spread among 2 releases. The first half of the release is very much in the robots-having-an-argument rather than the peaceful-cosmic-journey vein. The tracks feature abrupt changes, stabbing asymmetrical rhythms, multiple layers of sound and a darker moodier feel. Opening track "Picture painters" is the brightest and liveliest of the three, driven by a classic undulating electro bassline with lots of room to groove within it. Bernardi gradually adds on more and more frenetic elements that push the track (and the right crowd) to ever higher levels of jerky intensity. "Sweet little cheeky" has a similar underpinning but is developed into a much more 4/4 rhythmwith dramatic changes in mood and emphasis to keep it interesting. Finally "Porcelain Candy" offers something rather different with a harsher, less fluid sound as Bernardi's machines are pushed to their rhythmic and sonic limits. Frantic techno for the freaks! More

Marco Bernardi has enjoyed a long an illustrious career, but it's probably in these last couple of years that the Glaswegian producer has found his sound. Previous releases on Frustrated Funk, Clone, Royal Oak, Crème Organisation, Futureboogie and Rawax have built a solid reputation, and key releases last year on Carl Craig's Planet E and MOS/Delsin have sealed his rep as a unique player in the industry. So it's with welcome arms that Hypercolour release the 'Music For Short Attentions' EP, choc full of energizing sounds. Lead cut 'No One Seems To Care' could just be a bona-fide cross over for our man (not that it is the intention), but the surging Resse-esque bassline, blazing synth stabs and rock solid beats provide a real 'call to the dancefloor' moment, the discordant vocal adding to the mood. ‘Meteor' has Bernardi playing his toys to maximum effect, dark and raw Motor City vibes, shades of early Claude Young and Anthony Shakir abound here. 'In Between Fire' is a groovy as hell house cut, all deft organ riffs and twisted modulation whilst vinyl closer 'The Final Triangle' sounds old skool to the max, but a sound and atmosphere that one will never tire of; melancholic riffs and hypnotizing drum machines, all the trademarks of this classic sound we know as techno (in all its forms and tempos). Great stuff from Marco, and an artist we hope to hear much more of in 2014. More

The second offering on HCS from the mighty Rotterdam based duo. Again Duplex drop bombs with their signature state of the art inner city techno. Clearly playing with their love for the motorcity but always pushing the boundaries of what we like to call harbour city soul. 3 tracks ranging from beautiful deep electro to floor killing techno tracks. Highly recommended!!

Razor sharp futuristic textures from the Bristol based producer, dropping one of his deadliest EPs to date. Stratagalastico is an absolute bomb of machine-made dynamite, dark and deadly for those who like to lurk in the shadows. Creepy shenanigans are most certainly the order of the day, but with that said, Marco ends the EP with a deep, melodic piece titled “Bugs In The Virus”, a transcendent composition that enriches the Stratagalastico experience and completes the package. Killer.

On his first release for Berceuse Heroique, Rotterdam's finest DJ Overdose meets one of the strongest producers of Detroit, Mr. OB Ignitt. Overdose creates the best soundtrack for a "march of the robots" scene with Dead City. The mighty bounce of early Dr. Dre productions meets some nasty electro carnage. On Sorry To Disappoint you can hear the classic West Coast electro sound of some of his older releases mixed with some funky sci fi synth lines. Then, OB Ignitt takes this monster of a tune and creates one of the gnarliest house tunes of this year with a proper G Funk bassline that will properly test your sound system on a good night.

Morah's first release came from Helena Hauff's Return To Disorder label and this time the Athenian producer takes the same techno and electro sound and goes completely berserk for Berceuse Heroique. Morah creates some huge waves of feedback on Anarchy, which sounds like a techno version of Metal Machine Music, then he takes the old school Viewlexx sound and makes it even more confrontational, on You Said No and Impasse. Looking Back is a beautiful, melancholic - but still very dysfunctional - version of the death of a rave. One of the strongest points of this new producer is that his music sounds like the city of Athens right now: Raw energy mixed with manic depression and pessimism. More

Koehler returns to Berceuse Heroique with his third release for the label. Contra Blood invokes the spirit of early No U Turn records, infusing some techno dynamics, creating a very interesting anthem for people who don't care about boundaries in dance music. Flammarion Breach combines his classic 'ardcore techno sound with a repetitive arpeggio that recalls the tension of some of the best film scores by John Carpenter. With Rotating Rupees, Koehler delivers another beautiful ambient tune and this time its his ode to Zelda. More

Florian Meyer back on BH, with ten minutes of gamelan psychedelia, subtly and tensely minimalist as Terrence Dixon at his best. On the flip, Dresvn takes more of a beeline to Detroit, fuelled by submerged classics like UR’s Coinochime — cosmic, but deadly and unsettling. (‘Gammel’ means ‘junk’, in German. Maybe Magellan the explorer permeates that title, too, going round in circles in the East Indies, giddy and gammy below decks, amidst his trophy exotica.) Warmly recommended.
