A demo tape, sent to Capitol Records by The Trash Company in the early 90's, garnered this curt response from then President of the R&B Division, Joy Bailey: "Some music was never meant to be heard." Thug Records returns with one of the most intriguing releases to grace the catalogue so far. Not restricted by any one scene, Max Monroe of The Trash Company produces a hypnotic medley of original hard edge rhythm & blues, soul dance and classic psychedelic punk wave textures. Armed with a condition known as Synesthesia [meaning he perceives sounds, words and letters in terms of color] and a 4 track cassette recorder, The Trash Company has spent the last 30 years as a bedroom recording genius.
It wasn’t until recently that the magnitude and quality of his unreleased collection of tape recordings were discovered. Unearthed by The Scorpio Brothers - Troy Hurt and Marty Key, 2 record collectors from Richmond VA. They discovered a copy of "Come to Me Softy"; a 45 by The Trash Company recorded and released in 1979 at the former Broad Street recording studio [Alpha Audio]. The record was discovered in a second hand singles box at a tiny record store called Carrington’s Music in Petersburg VA. Inspired by this weird record, Troy Hurt hunted Max down using various crate digger methods and eventually found he had local contact details. After getting in touch, Max sent across a number of tracks that had been collecting dust in his closet for the last couple of decades. The Scorpio Brothers were blown away... this led to the release of the Trash Company’s now critically acclaimed 2nd album, “The Earle Hotel Tapes 1979 – 1993”, which is a collection of music written in Room 111 of The Earle from that period. Presented here on Modern Love and in vinyl format on Thug Records are 6 new unreleased gems. The Trash Company’s recordings are starkly honest, deeply personal and ahead of their time. Future Techno.

Dwight Sykes - In The Life Zone
Back in print and just in time for summer relaxation. It's hard to believe this album came out over 10 years ago. Back then we thought it was too rough for consumption, were we wrong! Today, “Songs” can be heard on hundreds of playlists around the world and still attracts listeners with its unique sonic grit. It became a template for LOFI producers and has even been featured in multiple Thrasher skate videos. Its appeal continues to cross genres and remains entirely random, but unmistakably Dwight. If you missed out on this album the first time, it's your chance to get that first PPU restoration of Dwight's solo songs from the 80s. This is the restoration that took over 2 years and included; phones held up to speakers, cassette to 1/4 reel transfers, Tascam manipulations, scotch tape, and a pair of scissors.
Dwight Sykes aka Sporty Cat, was born February 27, 1956 in Nettleton, Mississippi. At the age of two Dwight and family moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan where he would remain for most of his younger years. At the age of nine Dwight started his musical career singing background vocals with a spiritual group, Airs of Harmony, Jr., now known as the Michigan Nightingales. After three years of signing, Dwight started playing guitar. He joined his first r&B band, The Kenyatahs, at age thirteen and then played for five years with the group. Following the break up of the group and the death of his mother, Dwight enlisted in the U.S. Army. During that time he played guitar and drums for the band 100% Pure Poison. They played throughout Germany for 18 months. After being honorably discharged, and back in the states, Dwight started playing in numerous local Michigan bands including Domain, and Chaos. Eager to write his own material, Dwight created the group Jahari. They toured for a couple of years in the Michigan area until another break-up. Still under the Jahari alias, Dwight wrote "Situations" which received respectable air-play on Michigan local radio stations, WKMI, WQXC, WRDR, WKZO and WKDS. Dwight now resides near Atlanta, Georgia. He continues to write and produce songs on his Tascam 464 four track console. Although he uses other avenues to provide for the upkeep of himself and son, his love of music keep the hope alive that he will one day get that big break in the music business. Dwight Sykes - Songs Volume One is a collection of material written, produced and recorded by Dwight Sykes on 4-Track Cassette, in his home studio L.U.S.T. Productions. More

PPU split 7" single showcasing the nouveau funk nite people of New Orleans, Louisiana.
Sexxy Dexx burst onto the scene in December 2014, igniting stages across New Orleans with their electrifying live performances. Their music is a thrilling fusion of post-disco, boogie, and electro, enriched by bold experimentation with synth, sampling, and effects. Mess/age - Otiteru
Mess/age is the music of Kyoto-based friends Khan Brown and Ohhki.? Formed in 2021, their unique sound was developed by chance with a circuit bent karaoke machine. Now combine that with logic beats, familiar breaks, Casio tones and their signature echo poetry, and you have songs that will be stuck in your head for a lifetime.
Limited to 200 copies, stickered white label with print insert.

Dazzle - Explain
2
Dazzle - In The Disco
3
Dazzle - Play It
Dazzle rolled deep. Very deep. In the 1980s, it wasn't unusual for the Milwaukee-based group to show up at various Midwest night clubs in a caravan of 30-40 cars and vans. Their live following was hard won over a career that spanned 20+ years, many line up changes, and a handful of project names. Friends, family, and fans made the journey with them weekend after weekend, a testimony to both the musical prowess of the group and the tight-knit community that they emerged from.
Donald Smith, band leader, was there the whole time - joined by many of his siblings and friends - first as founder of the Ghetto Players, a early 70's nine-piece which also included siblings Michael, Ronald, and Charles. They played hard funk in the style of early Kool and the Gang, and although they sadly left no recordings, the strength of their live act managed to catch the eye of local Milwaukee R&B music entrepreneur Cobie Joe Payne. Cobie had made a couple of records locally in the early/mid 70s as a singer, including the impossibly weird and amazing rare afro-blues-funk 45 "Sweet Thing", but had never enjoyed national success. When the Ghetto Players disbanded in the early-mid 70s, Donald soon put together a new group, C on the Funk (the 'C' referring to lead vocalist and sibling Charles), under Payne's tutelage. Sister Lorrie Smith came in as the drummer, the line-up being fleshed out by brothers David and Melvin Johnson, and friend Robert Mitchell. After a few years as a strictly live attraction, they drove to Chicago and produced a single, "In the Disco" / "A Place" for Payne's small record label Sweet Thang Records in 1980. Lacking the financial backing needed to supply the local R&B disk jockey's "promotional fees" , this single sadly languished in obscurity, gathering dust inside the local tavern jukeboxes and manilla promo envelopes that comprised Payne's DIY distribution network.
C on the Funk were traveling the Mid West extensively at this point, and making some important friends on the road. Ike Wiley Jr. of the Dazz Band/Kinsman Dazz took particular interest and the band was re-christened Dazzle, partially as a tie-in with Dazz, partially to embrace the new sounds that would distinguish the 70s disco scene from what record collectors and DJs would now refer to as the "Boogie" era. There no doubt was a stigma attached to the word "Disco" as the eighties began, and as we see in this collection C On the Funk's "In the Disco" is remixed and transformed into the psychedelic synth instrumental of Dazzle's "Disco's Out", a title which embodies both the next-step approach Smith and company were pushing for, and humorously comments on the state of black dance music in the early 1980s. The Dazzle recording, done in Chicago in 1982, updated the sound and featured an expanded line up, most notably a second synth player (Charles Washington), and a percussionist/second lead vocalist (Greg McDonald). The added synth textures and deep percussive grooves give the Dazzle recordings an elegant late night vibe that resonate just as well in a good pair of headphones as they do on the dance floor. The trance inducing cough syrup-warble of "Explain" may best exemplify this here. Sadly, a pressing flaw in the 12" halted production and promotion, and the EP and the songs within were lost to the ages. The group, having done a much better line in the live music business, followed that path instead all the way to the early 90s. --bio provided by andy noble More

Loni Gamble Band feat. Lisa Warrington - Like The Way Yo Do It (Tom Noble Edit)
Repress!
Loni Gamble stepped into the international spotlight with his 1983 debut synth funk album on Canadian imprint Tracey/Unidisc. The record received local radio support, and some regional record shop distribution, but never really made it out of the area. More
