It’s been 3 years since the last Basic Soul Unit EP on Lab.our and the label co-head is back to top form! Loose, melodic and funky, the Toronto producer stretches his legs across 4 tracks in this kaleidoscopic gem of an EP.
On A1 is ‘Behavoural Issue’, a frenetic, crunchy and off-kilter number that will have you contorted in distortion with all arms and legs on the dancefloor.
‘Rising Over The East’ marches in next, a deep jacking head trip to the Orient opium den with its endless arpeggiators. On the B-side, the heavy broken club banger ‘Propulses’ harkens back to the glory rave days without mimicry. A Basic Soul Unit interpretation with his undeniable footprint in the mix.
‘My Heart Skips’ turns the dial down several notches into deeper house terrain. The soulful ride begins as an easy cruise before deftly lurching into an odd rhythmic fractal workout that the producer has become known for.
Sealing an untouchable reputation in the world of broken soulful lo-fi techno, Basic Soul Unit casts an even wider net to captivate audiences with this must-have EP.

Basic Soul Unit returns with another deadly EP on Dolly, further investigating the thin dividing line between techno and broken beats. A-side "Wallow" is a menacing big room stormer with a delicate pad breakdown, with Voiski providing an alternate more driving techno version of it with a splendid melodic twist midway through the track. "Radiate" and "Joyride" on the B both have BSU's signature rhythmic ideas and fresh energy with "Radiate" even going full-on Broken Rave! "Joyride" is that upbeat funky techno nugget that's going to sit in your DJ bag forever.

Stuart Li, better known as Basic Soul Unit, has been dropping quality records via a litany of highly respected imprints like Ostgut Ton, Crème Organization, Mule Electronic and Versatile over the past decade. Hypnotic and deep, but always funky, Li now brings his rugged house to the Dekmantel imprint for the very first time, serving up this finely crafted follow-up to his 2012 debut album. Delivering ten Detroit and Chicago-inspired house tracks of the finest calibre, Li's offset and grubby bruk drums are a constant nod to the dance floor, while his melodies lean towards an unparalleled industrial edged emotion. From the LFO-like synth-line and crunchy jack of 'Fate In Hand', to the Levon Vincent-esque techno shuffle 'n mutter of 'Landlocked' and the Morphosis-gone-wild style of 'Unwavered', on the to the dark subbass welt of 'The Rift Between' and the relentless floor destroyer 'Temptress': 'Under The Same Sky' sets the bar fly high for raw yet extremely original house music.

New Kanada is proud to present the new EP by Basic Soul Unit. With past releases on seminal house label Versatile, acid crazy Mathematics, deep and dark Philpot, Japan’s Mule Electronic and his own imprint, Left Of The Dial, Stuart Li (aka Basic Soul Unit) has crafted a very specific sound for himself. Part old school house, part new school jack, and sprinkled with a serious dose of Chicago acid. Future soul from the memories of warehouse parties, reggae nights and Caribbean acid. Stuart can evoke clear memories of Larry Heard or Joe Smooth, while at the same time taking cues from the acidic grooves of early Adonis. Combine this with a serious mechanical groove, and we have lift-off. “Hope.Unity.Vision” is one of those cuts that, when heard on a loud soundsystem, can completely take over the room. Sensuous, deep and hypnotic - until the killer kick drops and then things start to dissolve. “Basic Necessity” is the mixing tool to rock the house down. Off-kilter acid express, straight to the depths of real techno. Black moments, lights flashes, and the swing to jack your body. We end with the aggressive “Rhythm No. 1”, which takes cues from early Industrial EBM It intermingles so deep into the soul and spirit of early Chicago, that we get lost in the raw rhythm. A gem in the rough, only for the headstrong

Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit is no unknown in the game, but he´s new to our camp. After following his output for some time now, we finally could sign two tracks of his raw and edgy Techno for Philpot.
"Dank" is a growing piece of pure Space Funk! Resonating basslines and banging drums collide with twisted arpeggios, fall apart and rise again…caused mayhem when tested out! "The Stand" starts with some oldschool flavoured breaks to shuffle it´s way into bleepy heavens of acid-infected wildpitch craze! People, we must rise up from our graves!
