New Kanada is proud to present the new EP by Basic Soul Unit. With past releases on seminal house label Versatile, acid crazy Mathematics, deep and dark Philpot, Japan’s Mule Electronic and his own imprint, Left Of The Dial, Stuart Li (aka Basic Soul Unit) has crafted a very specific sound for himself. Part old school house, part new school jack, and sprinkled with a serious dose of Chicago acid. Future soul from the memories of warehouse parties, reggae nights and Caribbean acid. Stuart can evoke clear memories of Larry Heard or Joe Smooth, while at the same time taking cues from the acidic grooves of early Adonis. Combine this with a serious mechanical groove, and we have lift-off. “Hope.Unity.Vision” is one of those cuts that, when heard on a loud soundsystem, can completely take over the room. Sensuous, deep and hypnotic - until the killer kick drops and then things start to dissolve. “Basic Necessity” is the mixing tool to rock the house down. Off-kilter acid express, straight to the depths of real techno. Black moments, lights flashes, and the swing to jack your body. We end with the aggressive “Rhythm No. 1”, which takes cues from early Industrial EBM It intermingles so deep into the soul and spirit of early Chicago, that we get lost in the raw rhythm. A gem in the rough, only for the headstrong More
