Berlin’s cult techno duo Exercise One release their newest 12” featuring 3 tracks. One track reminiscent of
the past, one track gazing at the future and a time defying remix by Locked Groove.
‘timetrap' has always been the dark horse of Exercise One's back catalog, so they decided to go back to the
original idea of the track and see where they could take it. A few sessions later their ears were happy and
‘timetrap 2016’ was born. The staccato groove and eerie hook of the original now live in a much more
powerful and demanding surrounding. Exactly what they where looking for.
To take the idea one step further they asked prolific producer Locked Groove, a fan of the original on Wagon
Repair, to rework the track and they received a gem in return. His lush, trippy remix takes a totally different
path, meandering around a perfect balance of melody and seductive rhythmics that have made him such a
sought-after producer.
'502 last sequence' is the newest creation of Exercise One and nicely rounds out the release. Slightly
rougher and darker, the track perfectly displays where the duo’s heart is at currently. A track built on genuine
machine love, the Handwerk Audio studio has again left its mark on their output…not surprisingly. More

To mark a decade of their live techno outfit, Exercise One release a new album and series of vinyl remix EPs by friends and fellow travellers from along the road. Choosing 10 remixes for their 10 years of performing live and 9 tracks on the album for 9 years of releasing records.The close duo of Marco Freivogel and Ingo Gansera have spent the past decade recording and performing live as Exercise One, collaborating, remixing and running two independent labels all their own way. Already seasoned live performers when they met, Marco's early years were spent absorbed in goth culture & industrial music while Ingo leads a double life as the drummer of a Berlin punk band. These influences fuel their old school Kreuzberg DIY vibe as well as injecting their brand of techno with a warmth and vibrancy that bursts from every exuberant record and infectious performance. Their energy mixed with an abundance of creativity has helped to seal their musical world view, that music production and performance should have a symbiotic relationship.Early on, Exercise One created their own label Lan Muzic, where they put out the first techno releases of Peter Van Hoesen and Philip Sherburne, as well as Donato Dozzy and Jacopo Carreras. Their debut album was released on Anja Schneider’s Mobilee Records, with 12”s over the years on Dumb Unit, Cocoon and Wagon Repair as well as remixes for a host of others too numerous to name. Most recently they have recorded almost exclusively for their former bootleg label Exone alongside collaborators like Mathew Jonson, Matilda, Mike Shannon and Deadbeat. In the last two years Exercise One completely overhauled their live PA, throwing out the computer and returning to the root of techno armed with an arsenal of blustering analog machines. It’s a testament to their belief that music and techno should be alive, with their music always guided by the spirit and flow of improvisation, driven forward by the tension of their real time on stage interaction and ability to go “off script” that make their performances more exciting and dynamic than the norm. ‘Same Story’ sets the scene for the album, with the duos musicality illustrated in the sea of gauzy pads that unfurl over an increasingly skewed rhythm. After succumbing to a cacophony of resonant percussion the focus is shifted to the floor, with the unyielding 4x4 thump and haunting motifs of ‘Verlooka’ ushering in tracks that capture the vitality of the pairs much lauded live act. ‘Gatium’ finds them at their most arresting, exercising the kind of restraint that renders every spluttering synth-line utterly captivating before ‘Electric Glare’ revs into action with a dank riff locking itself on top of a feverish bassline. After the cinematic ‘Stay’ serves as a blissful palette cleanser we’re back on the pulse with the jacking sensibilities of ’33 To Pay The Rent’ and the abrasive thuds of ‘The Raven’,
perhaps their most stark work to date. Penultimate track ‘Outshine’ masterfully reintroduces ethereal hints of melancholia over an undulating groove. Finally ‘Look At The Harlequins’ serves as an album closer like none other, a perfect distillation of a sound that unfolds like a dystopian nightmare; but one that’s sure to play a part in the most hedonistic moments of dancefloor abandon. Wagon Repair is pleased to welcome Exercise One to our roster, with their newest EP - Several Things at Once. This four track EP, with a bonus digital only track, is sure to please.
Title track, Several Things at Once, is the result of Marco and Ingo playing around with some new gear purchased to enhance their live act. In fact, this track was explicitly meant to be an addition to their live shows as it was produced using their exact on-stage setup. By laying out a groovy foundation and letting the machines do their thing, this intentionally rough and dirty sound is able to be accessible and seducing at the same time. The A2 track, Breeze, was inspired by windchimes on Marco's balcony, which were recorded with a mic and mixed with melodies and reverbed kicks coming from the back ground, resulting in an almost early era Aphex Twins ambient feel. Although the second tracks on both sides were originally planned to be really loud and noisy, both tracks came out on the opposite side of the spectrum as inspiration took hold. B1, Colony, is a subtle track that seems to accumulate power by winding itself into the mind and body of the listener. Whenever this one is played in front of a crowd it always has a great impact as its psychedelic and focused elements mix to great effect. As with the digital only bonus track, Twin, a trippy feeling lurks around with a kind of 'submarine' atmosphere. Both Twin and Colony have been a part of Exercise One's live-set for some time now as they are one form of techno that the boys just love to play as it gives them the variety that they have always craved. The closer on the EP, Prowl, is more of an tensioned atmosphere than a track. Prowl is mainly based on sound-shifiting and old samples that are intended to transmit the mood of a predator in search of its prey.The digital only track, Twin, has a chunky, upfront bassline for a foundation, which drags you into the track like a strong under current. Little sets of percussions and delayed chords fly through the track to keep the mind focused while the body is already hooked to the groove. Pretty in your face and trancey, but just so much fun to play!

Exercise One's newest EP is the result of happy jam sessions in the studio with a couple of their dear Canadian buddies. Exercise One have been concentrating on their new all hardware, no computer live show over the past half year - with performances at Panorama Bar, Cabaret and Le Showcase - and releases on Cocoon and their own Exone label. Mathew Jonson is responsible for some of the best techno records of the early 21st century, on his own, with his brother Nathan as Midnight Operator and with his constant conspirators The Mole, Tyger Dulha and Danuel Tate as Cobblestone Jazz, as well as running the Wagon Repair label. Leonard Flohen is fond of BBQ, moose and music - in no particular order. He's a distant cousin of that old rogue Hugh Betcha and if you ever were to meet them you'd see that they share a certain twinkle in their eye. In 'Lost forever in a happy crowd' Exercise One team up with Mathew Jonson, for a release that illuminates the key elements of both the producers sound. Both artists are at home pressing record at the start of a long relaxed daytime jam, then editing and tweaking the live take for a final flowing mix. It's deep, it's melodic, it's a little twisted in parts and it makes us want to wiggle it - just like the guys themselves. 'Blind Trapeze' is a classic Exercise One techno journey with a boisterous rocky bassline and an extra shake of darkness with Leonard's vocals looming over the mix.
