Featuring all-new material and recorded in the band's isolated studio on the edge of the Essex marshes, the album ebbs and flows in mood like the nearby Blackwater estuary. Working with a palette of vintage drum machines, analogue synths, textural samples, acoustic recordings, electric bass & heavily treated guitar, the songs were born out of captured live studio performances. Cooper & Hammond then rewired their initial sketches through a series of hands-on, lo-fi effects chains, blurring the edges between acoustic & electronic elements. The result is an organic, playful feel; leaving the music room to breathe and carrying distinct echoes of the band's previous work.
BIOGRAPHY
Ultramarine are the London/Essex-based duo of Ian Cooper & Paul Hammond. Formed in 1989, the band's early records were released by the seminal Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule. Ultramarine released five albums during the 1990s including the highly-acclaimed ambient techno/house classic Every Man And Woman Is A Star (Rough Trade, 1992); United Kingdoms (Blanco Y Negro, 1993), featuring writing collaborations with Robert Wyatt; and Bel Air (Blanco Y Negro, 1995). After a prolific decade, including full American and European tours with Björk and Orbital, Ultramarine went on a long sabbatical following the release of their fifth album A User's Guide (New Electronica, 1998). After a 13-year absence they resurfaced with two new singles in late 2011 on Real Soon and WNCL Recordings, fully rested and ready for action.

Info
WRWTFWW Records is honored to reissue revered UK electronic duo Ultramarine’s best kept secret from their discography, the superb A User’s Guide album, available as a limited double LP housed in a beautiful heavyweight sleeve with inside out printing.
On the rare occasions that Ultramarine’s story is told, the duo’s fifth album, 1998’s A User’s Guide, tends to get omitted from the narrative. Radically different to anything the duo released before or since, it has remained a slept-on, timeless and inherently futurist classic ever since.
Unavailable on vinyl since the year it was released – in part because the label it originally came out on, New Electronica, folded shortly afterwards – A User’s Guide was the result of a conscious decision by Ultramarine members Paul Hammond and Ian Cooper to change their working methods and the “sound palette” that underpinned their work.
Out went the partially improvised hybrid electronic/acoustic sounds and the collaborations with guest musicians they’d become famous for. They were replaced by painstakingly created electronic sounds and textures, metallic motifs, spaced-out chords, rhythms rooted in contemporary techno and drum & bass culture, and nods aplenty to pioneering music of the period, from the post-rock atmospherics of Tortoise, and the hazy dub techno of Basic Channel, to the tech-jazz of Detroit, the minimalism of Berlin, and the musically expansive warmth of Chicago deep house.
It may have taken a year to create – part of which was spent developing this head-spinning new sound – but the results were undeniably unearthly and effortlessly forward-thinking. Over a quarter of a century may have passed since it first appeared in record stores, but A User’s Guide still sounds fresh and modern – a remarkable achievement given the relatively sparse and basic equipment used in the making of the album.
As this first vinyl reissue conclusively proves, the material showcased on A User’s Guide has lost none of its sparkle in the 26 years that have passed since its release. For proof, check the head-nodding IDM bubbliness of opener ‘All of a Sudden’, the queasy, lopsided tech-jazz of ‘Sucker For You’, the locked-in beats and mind-mangling motifs of ‘Zombie’, the ghostly, out-there electro of ‘Ambush’, the Autechre-esque ‘Ghost Routine’ and the triumphant closing cut ‘What Machines Want’, a classic of minimalistic, jazz-flecked techno futurism.
Fully remastered from the original DATs by Jason G at Transition Studios, the 2024 vinyl edition of A User’s Guide thrusts Ultramarine’s most overlooked album back into the spotlight. This WRWTFWW edition also features brand new contextualizing sleeve notes, complete with new quotes on the production process from Ultramarine, by dance music historian Matt Anniss (author of Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music, and founder of online electronic music platform Jointhefuture.net).
Points of interests
For fans of electronic, leftfield, postrock, tech-jazz, IDM, minimalism, futurist electronica, dub techno, house, experimental, Autechre, Tortoise, Basic Channel, forgotten gems from superb discographies, very good music, and very very very very good music.
Official vinyl reissue of legendary UK electronic’s duo Ultramarine’s timeless and radical album A User’s Guide.

Real Sool brings together a trio of heavyweight practitioners in the fine art of House Music to remix tracks from ULTRAMARINE's critically acclaimed album of late 2013, THIS TIME LAST YEAR. Atlanta's KAI ALCE and Amsterdam's JUJU & JORDASH are Real Soon veterans with five releases between them on the label. We're also delighted to welcome on board long-term Ultramarine admirer ANDY BUTLER of HERCULES & LOVE AFFAIR who teams up here with Viennese producers HA-ZE FACTORY. The Kai Alcé and Hercules & Love Affair mixes share a similar approach; raw, jacking and dancefloor friendly. Kai gives EYE CONTACT a Chicago-flavoured jazz twist with a bassline reminiscent of Glenn Underground and fleeting high-register piano. On PASSWORDS, Hercules & Ha-Ze layer rhythm and vocal samples from the original track and punch a hole in them with brutal sawtooth basses and bouncing syndrums. On the flip, Juju & Jordash reduce the downtempo DECOY POINT to a warm, pulsing mantra. Throbbing organ and accordion drones, synth pads washing up in waves, a heartbeat kick-drum, ambient sounds from the room next door; all heard as though waking from a heavy, troubled sleep.

Real Soon are proud to present the first new material in 13 years by London-based electronic veterans ULTRAMARINE.
FIND A WAY rolls out dreamy, chopped & layered vocals over a wash of soft, treated guitar, deep synths stabs and swinging 808 percussion. The B-side VERSION kicks off with a monotonous metallic-sounding Moog synth loop and builds into a full live 808 workout punctuated by arpeggiated electric bass, vocal snippets and dub effects.

Ultramarine & Anna Domino meet again for a reworking of their collaborative track '$10 Heel'.
The song originally appeared on the Ultramarine album Signals Into Space (Les Disques du Crépuscule, 2019). $10 Rework replaces the urgent, jittery rhythm of the original with a straighter House backbone and then proceeds to disassemble the structure with a pair of freestyle, hands-on-the-desk, on-the-fly dub mixes.
Anna Domino's stream-of-consciousness lyrics tell the impressionistic tale of post-club after-hours chaos in Times Square, NYC circa 1979. Anna raps off studio equipment brand names like passing neon signs glimpsed in a blur through a taxi cab window.
Iain Ballamy wields his saxophone like a graffiti artist with a spray can; scrawling and skronking across the canvas. Ric Elsworth lurks in a side alley, unraveling a trash can monologue of wild flamming bongos.
Ultramarine is the UK duo of Ian Cooper & Paul Hammond. Formed in 1989, their albums include Every Man and Woman is a Star (Rough Trade, 1991), United Kingdoms (w/ Robert Wyatt) (Blanco Y Negro, 1993) and Signals Into Space (w/ Anna Domino) (Les Disques du Crépuscule, 2019).
Anna Domino is an American musician based in LA and NY, best known for her classic run of releases on Belgian label Les Disques du Crépuscule in the 1980s and '90s.
Iain Ballamy is a composer and saxophonist; a member of the Loose Tubes collective in the 1980s and more recently with several albums to his name on ECM.
Ric Elsworth is UK-based percussionist and vibraphone player.

SUN DANCE is the debut full release by Berlin's RISING SUN, aka Steffen Laschinski. The EP features Rising Sun originals 'Sun Dance' and 'Candy In My Pocket' - two blissful tracks of old-style House-influenced minimalism infused with the heady atmosphere of early-90s innocence and joy - distant memories of simpler times - beach parties, bonfires, the sun rising over the sea at dawn… On the B-side, SVEN WEISEMANN (Mojuba, liebe*detail, a.r.t.less, Styrax Leaves) remixes 'Sun Dance', stretching it out into a beautiful shape-shifting epic. All tracks are mastered by masked Techno maverick REDSHAPE (Delsin, Present, Music Man, Styrax Leaves) and a limited quantity will be available on orange vinyl. Steffen Laschinski is currently best known as the label boss of influential labels Styrax Records, Styrax Leaves and Millions of Moments. Rising Sun have previously featured on split artist releases on the Workshop and Ruin labels.

MINEFIELD E.P. is the second Real Soon release by Dublin-based Italian producer Leopoldo Rosa (aka LEROSA). On this 4-track EP Leo brings us more of his warm, loose-limbed, US-influenced, abstract House experiments and, on the snappy title track MINEFIELD, refers back to his earlier Electro sound. Whatever the style, Leo has a distinctive touch and a refreshingly simple, unpretentious production style - letting the machines do their business with the minimum of fuss. Leo has started to build a strong reputation over the past two years with a series of excellent releases on Real Soon, Enclave Recordings, A Touch of Class, Uzuri and Millions of Moments and has recently entered the live arena - look out for him in a club near you!
