The fouth and final limited edition Delicacies 12" this year is, in an slightly counter-intuitive twist, not taken from the forthcoming SMD album, "Welcome To Sideways". It didn't quite fit in with the flow of the track selection on the album, but we felt it really warranted it's own separate release particularly because of the ace Matrixxman remix. Both versions are driving, minimal techno, scattered through with melodic bursts but Matrixxman's LSD rework pushes the BPMs and frenetic energy to new levels.

"Far Away From A Distance" features hypnotic synth washes that glide slowly in and out of time with the track's rhythmic bed, stumbling over each other in a 5am haze. "Flying Or Falling" pushes into classic SMD melodies, mournful Detroit indebted warmth spilling over the groove.
Guest remixer this time is the ever excellent Lena Willikens, delivering massive club fire in the form of her own much more minimal take on “Far Away From A Distance", stripping it back and only allowing the melody to intrude in the last third. Over a couple of months in Jas Shaw's newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy Kent, which saw SMD once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months.
First up is the double header of “Staring at all this handle” and “Sky on the floor” – a hefty statement of intent, harking back to their more austere earlier Delicacies work. In the same vein, remix duties come from ear-battering mainstays Perc and Volte-Face, both delivering uncompromising “take no prisoners” approaches to the originals. SMD have thrown in their own dub mix of “Sky on the floor” for good measure. Quite literally kicking mad new flavour in your ear, SMD are back with the 4th course in their recent series of Delicacies. After collaborations with Bicep and Cosmin TRG, and their own solo Tong Zi Dan EP, this new smorgasbord features two original tracks and a remix from techno man of the moment, Trevino. Kicking things off is Snake Bile Wine – a tipple enjoyed in both China and Vietnam, where the venom and bile from the gall bladder is believed to improve male virility, amongst other benefits – consuming the poison makes you a man, it seems.... Snakes are either steeped whole in wine, or the bile is squeezed directly into a glass. The track’s muscular and sinuous rhythm pulses, exactly like the still beating fresh snake heart served in a shot of saki as an appetizer in the classier snake restaurants. Snake Bile Wine comes complete with a side order of a remix from Trevino, the techno alter ego of Marcus Intalex. Remix 1 strips it back, dubs out the chords and bass and tops it off with a skittering hi hat pattern. Snake Bile Wine is out on 12” full platter on the 20th January 2014

Simian Mobile disco are back with more of the world's only techno tasting menu, serving up a a brand new platter for your delectation: Tong Zi Dan are the Chinese delicacy usually translated as "virgin boy eggs". Like the tea stained eggs you?ll find in your ramen, these are eggs cracked part way through the boiling process, to let the flavours of the liquid seep through. All though in the case of Tong Zi Dan, the liquid is the urine of prepubescent boys. Very much like that urine, the burbling pads and uric submerged melodies permeate the cracked surface of the smooth ovoid outer casing of rhythm. On the flip side, Mike Denhert delivers his own take on the virgin boy egg phenomena

This EP collects four tracks from the same recording session as SMD's recent critically acclaimed album, "Unpatterns", that for one reason or another, didn't quite fit with the flow of the album order. Again we hear the band plowing the furrow of manipulating subtle modifications to machine generated patterns, allowing parts to drift and shift, and new forms to be teased out.

In early 2018, Jas Shaw, one half of electronic duo Simian Mobile Disco was diagnosed with a rare, health condition – AL amyloidosis – a disorder of bone marrow cells. Having just completed SMD’s 7th studio album, Murmurations, and with a special show at the Barbican with the Deep Throat Choir scheduled for April and the album due out in May, things were thrown into confusion. At the time, no one, including Shaw, knew how the treatment and prognosis would pan out. Jas had to start chemotherapy treatment almost immediately, which meant cancelling SMD’s live touring. The duo decided to go ahead with the Barbican show in spite of Shaw’s illness, which was especially poignant as all involved knew it could potentially be SMD’s last ever live performance – in the end it turned out to be a tour-de-force. If this was SMD’s swansong, so be it. In the year that followed, Jas spent the months receiving weekly chemotherapy treatment, learning to live with his condition, and when he felt well enough, spending hours in his studio making music. The result of this was twofold, firstly a collaborative album with Derwin Dicker (Gold Panda), released as Selling – On Reflection, on City Slang records in Nov 2018. Secondly, a steadily growing archive of solo work, which are being released steadily since April. Entitled “The Exquisite Cops”, this 20+ track growing body of work is seeing the light of day via SMD’s own Delicacies label – with a 2-track single released every fortnight and a limited edition double LP now scheduled for September 27. The double LP "Exquisite Cops" features Jas' selection of 8 tracks from the whole series, presented in a lush gatefold sleeve, showcasing the "dymo" text based photos taken by Jas that have featured as artwork on each release.

The second of this year’s SMD singles on their own Delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “Remember In Reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. The second track, “Soft Attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “Soft Attack (Drum Version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal DJ tool. Also included here is a remix of ‘Remember in Reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, DJ Hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. He extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. As one half of Simian Mobile Disco, Jas Shaw has been co-creator of a remarkable string of varied albums, from their debut, Attack Decay Sustain Release, through their vocal lead more pop leanings on Temporary Pleasure, uncompromising techno on Delicacies, and prog synth wig outs on Whorl. Now, given a bit of free time while his musical other half, James Ford, has been off producing for other bands, Jas has been busy crafting a whole slew of new material, the first fruits of which see the light of day on this brand new release on the duo’s own Delicacies label. Stylistically closest to SMD’s Unpattern’s era, the EP kicks of with the title track “Love Doubled”. Full of skittering percussion clamped to propulsive backbone of a kick, the shimmering and clanking melodies and booming bass has nods to likes of Pantha Du Prince and Roman Fluegel. On the B side, “It’s Not The Clock That Tells The Time” nervous little patterns of stabs ease their way into the listeners consciousness before being joined at the halfway point by another low end bass riff. “To Mock A Killing Bird” takes a slightly more sedate route, more suited to early morning comedowns than dancefloors, with a shimmering ambient opening, reminiscent of the deeper Whorl cuts, before crunchy drum loops emerge to build structure.

Simian Mobile Disco are back with the second in a series of collaborations, following on from "Sacrifice", their joint effort with Bicep. This time they've joined forces with Cosmin TRG fresh from his highly acclaimed album 'Gordian' on 50 Weapons. The fruits of this hard graft in the electronic kitchen of SMD's studio (to push the food metaphor to its limits) kick off with Surströmming. This northern Swedish delicacy of tinned, fermented sour herring has the dubious claim to fame of being the most putrid smelling food substance in the world. The burbling, queasy synth tones reflect the effects of this scent on all but the true connoisseurs. With slightly less seasoning, Sannakji, is a Korean cuisine that consists of chopping off the tentacles of an octopus and serving them, live and squirming on your plate. The real challenge for the dedicated gourmand is to swallow them before the suckers tear chunks from your throat and mouth. Try not to think about the minimal melodic tendrils of the music forcing your gullet open as they attempt to climb out... Delicacies will be back in 2014 with yet more delights of the world's only techno tasting menu. Surströmming and Sannakji will be available on 12" full platter and digital small plate on 9th December 2013, and Cosmin TRG will be special guest at SMD's Delicatessen night, at XOYO in London on the 7th December.
