Dutch millipede Nick Lapien offers a view of one of his intriguing projects, this time as Metropolis. This alter-ego, inspired by the 1927’ cultfilm, gives his idea of how the city would look like if it was created out of musical waves. Neo-electronic, mechanical, raw and as dark as a film noir. Limited copies on the nice Other Heights label!

Metropolis - No Reason (Cyspe Remix)
Artefakt's De Stijl imprint presents a new EP by Metropolis. Metropolis, an alias of Nick Lapien--half of Artefakt--had a short strain of releases via labels such as Pinkman, Other Heights, BLIQ and Photic Fields starting 10 years ago. With his No Reason EP he reboots this guise and presents an unpolished and rough take of his wide techno repertoire. The A-Side includes two smokey warehouse-proof acidic techno jams, where title track No Reason on the B-Side leans more towards an off-beat EBM affair with vocals by Thuraya Shi. To round it off, Artefakt production partner Robin Koek delivers an immersive remix as Cyspe.

Nick Lapien's debut release as Metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. A skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. That initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. This, his second release as Metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. The titular track on the A side is a deep, psychedelic groover. Melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by Lapien with optimum restraint. Equally pensive and gorgeous, The Flood serves as a Machine's beat-less foil on the reverse. Made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of Jean Michel Jarre's more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. Expect to hear more from Lapien here at Sequencias. He has many more dark corners left unexplored.

Justin Berkovi normally should not need an introduction, being involved in multiple techno-projects in the past, and still standing strong nowadays. His track ‘Old Timer’ reflects his musical personality and history and is being reinterpreted by another techno-historian, Aubrey. On the b-side newcomers Jack Dixon and Henning Baer make their introduction on Other Heights with two total different interpretations which are to become oldtimers themselves.

Other Heights brings the debut EP from Ghostek, one of the young pioneers in the postdubstep-era. Next to his own ’Cryon‘, it features an intense collaboration with Roof Light as Ghostlight and a remix of his favorite track from TH. Eerie, deepness and a little blend of darkness straight out of the Russian forests marks this first exciting release.
