Nick Lapien's debut release as Metropolis garnered little attention when it materialized last year. A skeptical yet dedicated network of underground heads built up a subterranean buzz that has yet to spread into the daylight. That initial transmission was thick with the raw analogue flavors that have become ever-present in dance floor fare recently—but his is a sound that is dedicated to the emotive, narrative aspects of electronic music rather than simple fetishization or passing curiosity in the days of yore. This, his second release as Metropolis, shows a more focused and patient hand at work. The titular track on the A side is a deep, psychedelic groover. Melodies, textures and sequences undulate and intertwine within a lightless atmosphere guided by Lapien with optimum restraint. Equally pensive and gorgeous, The Flood serves as a Machine's beat-less foil on the reverse. Made up of little more than feedback and two slow, echo laden arpeggiated sequences, this is reminiscent of Jean Michel Jarre's more sinister moments: a brilliant paradox of economy and indulgence. Expect to hear more from Lapien here at Sequencias. He has many more dark corners left unexplored.

Collaborations is a new series curated by Artefakt on their own imprint De Stijl. Inviting friends and likeminded artists for extended studio improvisations crafting an EP based on live sessions. First guest is Claudio PRC, a close friend and familiar face in the deep techno scene. Having released on labels such as Semantica, TGP, his own 012 and most recently Delsin Records, he has a close connection to Artefakt. Both artists reside in Berlin and share a dedicated passion for atmospheric and immersive ambient and techno. Collaborations I features four jams combining the unmistakable strengths of both artists, resulting in a well varied pack of emotive techno with room for experiment. Where 'Gaia' and 'Dwelling' feel like iconic tracks of the pair teaming up, on the flip side 'Sonic Rite' slows down in pace and catches a magnificent groove. The shared love for ambient results in the mesmerizing closer of the EP 'Distant Light'.

The second release on Artefakt's De Stijl expands the sound of the imprint introducing three new names to the catalog. The record ascends into a subterranean rave with Aphelions' 'Temple 7' depicting a ritualistic gathering carved out in distorted analog transients, shimmering melodies and modulated voices moving over deep pounding sub frequencies. Label founders Artefakt sustain the urgency on the A side with 'Agents Of Reality', a high energy uncompromised off-beat structure venturing into eery resonant pads gravitating towards a subdued acid motive. Energy shifts towards subsonic atmospheres takes place on the B side, as Artificial Drm envelops the listener in a layered driven spectacle with his heady piece 'Human With No Name'. From the residual hiss and feedback tones of the B1, Northern Electronics affiliate Korridor emerges with an epic ambient piece titled 'VI'. Lush pads and analog square bass-lines drift off into rhythmical arpeggiations bringing a close to versatile record which transports the listener to another place and feeds the imagination.
