Motor city royalty Floorplan, aka Detroit techno pioneer and creator of minimal techno Robert Hood and his DJ/producer daughter Lyric Hood, announce their forthcoming inclusion in the deeply respected ‘fabric presents’ mix series with the release of their new single ‘You’re A Shining Star’, out now. The full mix drops on digital/vinyl/CD via fabric records on 28th November. Robert has been a long-standing fabric favourite since the institution's earliest years, clocking up over 20 sets in Room 2, including a live session on New Year's Eve, 2012. In 2008, he'd turn in Fabric 39 which is among the most revered contributions to the fabric mix canon. Now, with the forthcoming ‘fabric presents Floorplan’ mix, the story comes full circle - marking both the duo’s debut on the iconic mix series and a monumental moment for the family project. About Floorplan: Emerging from a musically rich Detroit upbringing steeped in Motown and vinyl culture, Robert Hood became an early member of the seminal ’90s collective Underground Resistance, helping to spearhead the rise of techno. Going solo, Hood created minimal techno with his Minimal Nation LP. Groundbreaking productions, acclaimed performances, and his own M-plant label followed, until in ’96 he formed Floorplan - an alter ego to expand beyond minimal techno into gospel, soul and house-infused techno. Immersed in music from an early age, Lyric eventually caught the same electronic spark that’s driven her father for decades. In 2014, after the release of Hood’s debut Floorplan album Paradise, the project evolved as the then-16-year-old Lyric joined him to perform as Floorplan, including a supreme closing set at Dekmantel’s Boiler Room stage. Two years later, Lyric officially became a full member of Floorplan, cementing their father–daughter collaboration, and they’d release their co-produced album Victorious on M-Plant that same year.

Laurent Garnier is joining the ‘fabric presents’ mix series, and details are now out on this bespoke milestone release. The trailblazing DJ and producer is doing not one but four mixes as he embraces an opportunity to go even bigger for the London institution in its 25th groundbreaking year. A full-spectrum and multi-genre release, there’s a UK-focus, house, techno and downtempo mix. In his words, “diversity makes it richer, makes it better.” Eager to pay homage to the vitality of club culture, his vision is to take us through a rapturous weekend at fabric from Friday through to the afters. Making it even more unique, he’s also dropping an original four-track EP - one track per genre. Garnier: “Clubs have been my second home since the start of my career. Once you’ve witnessed that unique connection you can create in a club with a crowd, once you’ve experienced it from behind the decks, you just know you are where you’re meant to be. This special journey with fabric is of course a tribute to the legendary London club - a place that’s been a home to so many clubbers, DJs and music-lovers for so many years - but most of all, a tribute to all the dancefloors and all the clubs around the world.” Ploughing through hundreds of records a day, it’s no surprise to hear Garnier describe the track selection process as being “complicated”. His enriching trip through fabric spans over five hours with each mix coming in at 1 hour 20 minutes. Across all four, it’s clear that he’s immersed in the present and future-focussed with a majority of the chosen records dropping only in the last three years. The House Odyssey mix kicks off with afro house via South African producer Mr. Blasé, and the vibrancy continues through cuts from Cape Verde to Chicago as newer faces Culoe De Song, Neinzer and Tal Fussman meet linchpins DJ Spen, DJ Lady D and Mike Dunn. In techno, his Rhythmic Resonance mix is searing with high impact moments from Red Axes, John Tejada, Electric Rescue, Works of Intent, and himself as three of his own epic productions feature. A UK-focus underpins Garnier’s nod to fabric’s fervent bass devotees with the Into The Low-End session featuring Skrillex, MC GQ, Sami Virji and Martin Badder. On The Way Home sidles up to clubbers for a downtempo dust down with stunning explorations from Daudi Matsiko, Adriano Koch, Richie Culver and Melody Gardot, among others. His EP further showcases his mastery of genres. Luminous house cut ‘Odyssée Maison’ is in for spirited dancefloor grabs with Dan Diamond on vocals, while ‘Resonances From The D’ is for techno heads, glued together with tumbling rhythms, soaring synths and scattering hi-hats. ‘Playing With The Low-End’ is the bass-doused maze that looms large before ‘On The Way Home’ brings a shower of orbiting synths. Brazil 45, number 83.

For number 83 in the Brazil 45 series, we pulled out a real treat. It features two tracks from Roberto De Melo Santos. Born in 1949 in Recife (Brazil), and despite a small discography, he is considered among the true icons of Brazilian soul music under his artist alias, Di Melo.

His self-titled debut album from 1975 has long been collectible for its irresistible Brazilian-funk sound, pleasing the Brazilian, B-Boy breaks, funk collectors, and sample hunters alike. With original copies for the album now fetching crazy sums, we felt these tracks needed another moment in the sun for all to enjoy.

For this release we selected two of our favourite cuts from this cult album, ‘Kilariô' and ‘Pernalonga'. Coincidentally these two gems were released on Odeon Records in 1975 as a rare promo campacto (a Brazilian 7", which plays at 33rpm). 'Kilariô' is a pure Brazilian-soul classic. All the right elements gel together, whilst Di Melo works his relaxed vocal magic over the top. ‘Pernalonga', with its catchy guitar and horns intro, loose break-beat drum, has the feel-good factor which some may recognize as one of the samples behind N.A.S.A featuring David Byrne, & Chali 2na's 'The People Tree' from 2009.

Di Melo is still recording to this day, releasing an album with Cotonete on Favorite Recordings in 2019 - a true don.

Two Thou’s hybrid jazz act Oraculu debuts with a 12” in the realm of spiritual electronics, carrying the music touch of Berlin’s hottest jazz cats such as Monica Mussungo, Taymour Khajah, Ziggy Zeitgeist, El Congo Allen and Dylan Greene, plus a remix by Toribio, and a spoken blessing by Sonny Daze. Expect to oscillate.

This music was born in Berlin, matured with me through a winter in the rural Sardinia, and ended up on wax through Chicago and New York. With this record, that to me sounds in-between worlds, I want to recall that jazz and electronic music both emerged as inventions, and it seems to me they’re both suggesting us to keep inventing. Defected celebrates the life and legacy of house music pioneer Frankie Knuckles with a limited-edition vinyl offering of his notable ‘House Masters’ release.

Marking ten years since his passing, join Defected in honouring the enduring legacy of house music pioneer. All proceeds of ‘House Masters: Frankie Knuckles’ will be donated to Frankie Knuckles Foundation as it was when the compilation was originally released back in April 2015.

“Frankie Knuckles, whom many consider to be one of the architects of house music is still highly influential to a new generation. Since his untimely passing ten years ago it has been incredible to see the continued outpouring of love and respect that he has received. His legacy is why the Frankie Knuckles Foundation exists. Through our work we honour him by supporting initiatives that he was passionate about: music education, AIDS and diabetes research, prevention and LGBTQIA+ youth homelessness. A special tribute addition of Ellum Audio comes courtesy of Maceo Plex & Jon. Dasilva, who bring back a pair of bygone musical gems with their own modern interpretations. Featuring an astonishing guest appearance by house vocal sensation Joi Cardwell, Ellum delivers a late summer anthem with 'Love Somebody Else'. For the A-side Eric Estornel aka Maceo Plex revives an unreleased Jon DaSilva Remix of Colourblind's cover of 1979 Jones Girls classic 'You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else'. Having loved the remix, lost in the heady days of the early 90s, Eric orchestrated a studio session with legendary hacienda DJ Jon DaSilva to make a new reinterpreted version of the track replaying everything and creating a new melodies and sonsstructure, also managing to track down classic house singer Joi Cardwell to lay down fresh vocals and creating a real floor burner as a result. Irresistibly warm, smooth and groovy, 'Love Somebody Else' is quite simply massive. On the flip, Maceo Plex goes it alone and delivers 'Future Musik' - homage to a favourite Closer Musik track that never did see an official release.
