Unlike the main Magic Wand label, the imprint's offshoot 'Special Editions' series is a little more fluid about what it releases, with some EPs sporting original productions - many of which are admittedly sample-heavy - as well as re-edits. That's the case for this second missive from Matsoaka (real name Matt Lundgren). So, while the EP begins with a genuinely gorgeous and Balearic original cut (the dreamy and slow-motion folk-rock of 'Butterflies', featuring the emotive and harmonic vocals of Butterflies), much of the rest falls into the "Balearic re-arrangement" category. In this camp you'll find the immersive, trip-hop style dreaminess of 'Faith', the mid-80s Yellow Magic Orchestra-style Fairlight-sporting electro of 'Gin Yuzu', and the dollar bin brilliance of 'Sheriff' (a take on a Japanese city-pop cover of a reggae favourite).

The Nottingham twosome kick things off themselves with 'Carpenter', a dubby and bass-heavy extension of a dreamy, folksy number (all jangling acoustic guitar, stoned male lead vocals and gentle hand percussion), before we're treated to the 'Pointless edit' of 'Six Blade Scalpel' - a languid, bass-heavy revision of a late 70s blues/soft-rock number crafted by Bedmo Disco's Sell By Dave. The Magic Wand label casts another of its sonic spells with an anonymous artist at the helm. It's a knowing blend of many different influences all subtly distilled into a low-key classic. There are elements of yacht rock, Balearic, dub, funk and soul all to be found here. Drawing deeply from a rich palette of genres such as deep house, ambient, dub techno, and jazz, and feeding in inspirations from natural and philosophical spheres, Vakula's musical ethos has allowed him to continuously explore the inner and outer reaches of his universal soundscape. By feeling things out through hardware, he allows his music to grow organically, blending humanistic tendencies with technological outputs that always bring harmonious musical riches to the surface.
'Times' represents another seismic chapter in his story, one which contains a series of genre-defying blends that twist, turn, and enthrall with their ever-evolving beauty. 'Atmos Time' plays out as the EP opens up, and draws the listener close with a textured melodic chime and spaced out groove.
Floating along on a bed of cosmic ambience, the groove and melodic features cascade as one, drifting further through the layers of time and thought. 'Break Time' ups the urgency ever so slightly, with a similar atmosphere unraveling above an energised broken beat.
'Drum Time' brings in side B, and this one shifts perspective once more. The melodic sways up above merge and blend with the poly-rhythmic undertones, with the jungle-lite broken beat creating an enchanting energy. Trelik is an A-grade label for minimal heads and now the founder, Baby Ford, welcomes back fellow micro-house specialist Ion Ludwig for vital two-tracker. 'It Broke With Speed' starts with jittery rhythms and blurts of synth as the rubbery bass rolls on and the percussion is spindled lightly up top. It's a more fulsome sound than you might expect from this producer but the art is in the intricacies of its layers. 'Archa Edel' on the B is quick and deep, speedy but tightly controlled with fluttering snares peeling off the groove and cosmic whimsy existing in the pads. Classy cuts as always.

Inexplicably, yet true, Lexx returns to International Feel with a record that lives exactly where his music feels most at home. In Between State is a gentle navigation between memory and motion, between what has passed and what is still quietly unfolding. It is reflective without nostalgia, uplifting without force. Another Beach opens as a meditation on time and possibility. It looks back with warmth but keeps its gaze fixed on the horizon. A reminder that nothing is fixed, everything moves, and somewhere ahead there is always another sunset waiting on another shore.
Unison follows as a celebration of togetherness. Open-hearted and weightless, it captures the simple magic of shared moments with friends, music traveling across a room, and the quiet certainty that joy multiplies when experienced collectively.
The title track In Between State settles into that suspended hour where day dissolves into night. Inspired by early 90s electronica yet unmistakably Balearic in spirit, it drifts forward with a subtle psychedelic glow, neither arriving nor
departing, just perfectly hovering in place.
Closing the journey, Durchs Hinterland rolls steadily outward into open space. Born from long rides through backwoods and side roads, it moves with hypnotic momentum and the calm rhythm of forward motion. Endorphins rise, thoughts loosen, and the landscape begins to breathe with you.
Four tracks, quietly luminous. Music for transition, companionship, and the spaces in between. Lexx remains exactly where he should be.

Manchester dub techno explorer Andrew Hargreaves has just dropped his new album, Objects, on Lempuyang, and now some choice cuts from it get some tasty rework action. Deadbeat's Nephilim version of 'Notions' kicks things off with underlapping kicks that cuddle and comfort. 'Ruptures' (Federsen remix) taps into the stripped-back and sparse Basic Channel template, while 'Perspectives' (Merv remix) brings more light to the EP with subtle beams piercing the surface and energising as they do so. 'Assertions' gets an Ohm & Octal Industries remix that is more heady with widescreen synth layers constantly in flux.

To celebrate two decades of Metro Area, Environ has partnered with renowned mastering engineer Matt Colton (Metropolis Studios) to remaster and recut the first four Metro Area 12"s: Metro Area, Metro Area 2, Metro Area 3 and Metro Area 4. Unlike the album reissue, these records include the original, extended 12" versions of all songs, including some which have never been re-released. Metro Area 4 is the duo's fourth 12" EP, originally released in 2001.

The gold standard edit masters at Scruniversal have decided to refocus somewhere away from their usual Brazilian sound for this latest 7". It finds the crew heading to Africa and digging deep for new grooves, with Tony Lavrutz, Scruscru & Dwaal coming correct. 'Afrika Bambaataa' kicks the record off with a laid back Afro-tinged broken beats with a sunny disposition and plenty of bright melodies that wouldn't sound out of place in a Nightmares on Wax set. On the flip side joint, 'Zulu Jam" the drums cut more deep with organic percussion scattered up top next to expressive flutes. Perfect summer vibes.
