Words like soulful techno, real techno and true techno are easily thrown around these days but what really is a 'true techno' record? Arguably we could put Nu Era's debut 1994 "Beyond Gravity" album in that bracket.
"EVOLVE" follows in that footpath and in some ways goes back to an earlier techno sound, pretty hard to do that while still sounding futurist. EVOLVE does just that, its Nu Era still evolving without loosing formation. From the opening track "Metal Butterfly" the 909 drum machine powers through classic Marc Mac (4hero) chords and melodies, that 909 kick drum and baseline work in combination to deliver a more edgy techno belter on "Flying Colours". The 4x4 kick is broken up on tracks and electrified on "Theme From Joe Smoke" the yin and yang forces provide a haunting but uplifting electro master class. "Closer To Mars" creeps into a fusion style tech workout, with jazzy, soulful keys and melodies intertwining, EVOLVE is complexed but simply soulful with big influence from Detroit and has all the hallmarks of a classic in waiting.

Marc Mac - Yasuke Soul
Marc Mac back with another high grade Bruk, Electro Boogie monster. This is the fourth and final piece of the series. From Africa to Jamaica, Brazil and now Japan Marc Mac has explored the international fusion and cultures that has been an influence on his style of Broken Beat. The four track EP is under-pinned with Jazz/Funkiness and a hint of Jungle in the subs can be felt on "Kambei". 'Yasuke Soul" and "Tokyo Nightlife" feel like a head nod to Ryuichi and Akiko, so buckle up and get ready for a Journey eastbound. Brilliant cover art is supplied by Mitchy Bwoy.

Marc Mac - Music of Life
Following on from the 2 heavyweight EPs, Ah-Free-Ka & Ja-Maye-Ka, Marc Mac continues to fuse worldly music influences into broken beat. This time the sounds of Brazil are featured and blended into that London nu-boogie, broken beat vibe. The strings, piano and bass at times are reminiscent of Marc's 4hero productions as he is joined by musicians Luke Parkhouse on percussion, Nathan Haines on Sax and Canada's Octavio Santos & Mookie Williams on horns. It's a 4 track journey just right for the sun and ready for your summer eclectic musical adventures. The cover art by Mitchy Bwoy is a fantastic compliment to the music and makes up a cool art package in full

JJ Can - I Don’t Know Why (The dub mix)
Plastik People Collections dropped this one back in 2019, and it became an instant classic that soon sold out. It has since rocketed in price on the second-hand markets, so thankfully, the label is reissuing it this summer. Cultured Pearls's 'Mother Earth' is effortlessly cool garage-house with bumpy drums and expressive piano jams perfect for outdoor dancing. Night Society's 'You Turn Me On' has an authentic US edge and hot and humid groove with passionate vocal cries, then JJ Can's 'I Don't Know Why' is a dubby and low-slung deep garage sound with chopped vocals and a timeless appeal. Three vital cuts that will be huge all over again this year.

Ramon Morris - People Make The World Go Round
Next up in Mr Bongo's Groove Merchant Records reissue series, we present the only solo album saxophonist Ramon Morris recorded as a bandleader. Having cut his teeth playing with the iconic band Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers and working with other jazz greats, including Reuben Wilson, Shirley Scott, Rashied Ali Quintet, and Woody Shaw, 1973 saw Ramon take the step into solo territory. The resulting album Sweet Sister Funk became a certified classic and a landmark showcase of the cherished ‘70s jazz-funk sound, later sampled by the likes of DJ Premier, The Alchemist and DJ Shadow.
Originally released on Sonny Lester's iconic Groove Merchant record label and produced by Lester himself, Sweet Sister Funk is a jazz-funk masterclass. It features a slick line-up including Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Mickey Roker on drums, and Albert Dailey on electric piano. Rich and beautiful, the seven songs ebb and flow in energy, fusing jazz funk and soul jazz with style and swagger. There are bags of groove with Ramon and Cecil trading off on sax and trumpet in an effortless conversation throughout the LP, supplemented by brilliant solos from the rest of the players.
A gold mine of sampling material, the album includes a sublime cover version of The Stylistics' much-loved 'People Make The World Go Round', which was sampled by DJ Shadow on Blackalicious's 'Swan Lake' in 1994. Elsewhere, the percussion and bass intro of the opening track 'First Come, First Serve' is a sampler's delight - a deep, heavy groove with a fine saxophone workout by Ramon. Head to 'Don't Ask Me' and you’ll find the swinging horn intro that formed the basis of 'You Came Up' by Big Pun featuring Noreaga from 1998, whilst 'Wijinia' has echoes of ‘70s indie jazz by labels such as Strata East & Black Jazz.
Here at Mr Bongo, we are proud to be delving into the vaults of Groove Merchant Records once again, reissuing this iconic LP from Ramon Morris.
Housed in a tip-on sleeve.

one of the master teachers of the norwegian house and disco Rune Lindbaek - who put Oslo on the house map as part of the Those Norwegians ( Paper Music ) - joins forces with younger disciple Kare Frisvold for a potent, accoustic hallucinogenic called "bozak" brewed with the shared knowledge of mad sounds scientist like Walter Gibbons and Lee Scratch Perry: a constantly building electrical storm of strange psychedelic synth noises pierced by flutters of Rico Rodriguez style trombone solo, liquid guitar scales and Kraftwerk like melodic fragments all held together by a forcefull drum beat. the quirky "spok & spenning" on the flip is another beautifully strange mixture of cinematic melodies, like sweated out by a drunken Ennio Morricone, over an easy skanking beat and comes additionally in a stripped down bonus beat plus spacey sounds version by PRINS THOMAS. take a trip to your mind!

Reagan Ruler - Trouble Man Dub
NDATL’s sublabel NUTRIA proudly introduces its third release, NUTRIA 003, featuring the dynamic debut of South African artist Reagan Ruler with the "Trouble Man EP"
Carving out a distinct groove at the intersection of deep house, soul, and jazz-funk, Reagan Ruler makes an undeniable statement with this 5-track EP.
Opening the release is “Hypnotize,” a smooth, spellbinding groove that lives up to its name—gliding effortlessly on warm chords, soft vocals and deep, percussive flow.
On the B-side, “Don't Stop,” a vibrant and uplifting cut driven by shuffling drums, radiant horns, and soulful vocals—guaranteed to move dancefloors from Joburg to Detroit.
Then Reagan delivers a fresh and respectful reinterpretation of Marvin Gaye’s iconic “Trouble Man,” blending his signature production flair with a nod to the original's emotional weight and cinematic soul.
Also included on the 12" are a Hypnotize (Instrumental) and a Trouble Man (Dub)—tailor-made for DJs ready to take dancers deeper.
The Trouble Man EP marks a promising start for Reagan Ruler and another essential release from NUTRIA camp.

Tracklist:
A1. Peder Mannerfelt Remix
A2. Luca Lozano Gehts Garage Remix
B1. Aasthma Remix
B2. Steve Angello Remix
A noughties classic, an earworming anthem, an eventual schoolyard ringtone favourite; Roman Flügel’s once inescapable ‘Geht’s Noch?’ celebrates turning 21 on Running Back, refreshed and remixed by a scene-spanning set of artists paying keen tribute to its absurdist energy.
Casually released as part of a Cocoon Records compilation in 2004, ‘Geht’s Noch?’ rose from the depths with the support of Sven Väth, becoming an international phenomenon, conquering and uniting the dominant scenes of minimal and electroclash alike. Some have said it laid the foundations for the ‘Dirty Dutch’
house scene, albeit from over the border in Germany.
Well known for injecting much-needed levity into the contemporary club landscape via her Live From Earth parties, DJ Gigola adds additional firepower to ‘Geht’s Noch?’, inducing a planet-shaking kick drum, before sending the track’s signature bleeps into nonsensical Morse code for even greater pleasure. Another rave
culture connoisseur, Luca Lozano, offers two alternate takes; his ‘Technocs’ mix rolls deep with additional cowbells, robotic voice commands and stadium-sized claps. Meanwhile, the ‘Gehts Garage Remix’ draws a savvy connection with the original’s as-yet-untapped UK funky potential.
Peder Mannerfelt, who straddles the line between innovation, functionality, humor and seriousness quite like its original author, takes ‘Geht’s Noch?’ to truly wuthering heights. His remix builds unexpected drama and catharsis around the enduring riff, before a collaboration with studio partner Par Grindvik as Aasthma
spins the club out with a glossy, anime-tinted take, full of whimsy and colour.
And while the digital release of Geht’s Noch? also spans interpretations from Audion, Domnik Eulberg & Moguai, this vinyl release presses Steve Angello vs Who’s Who remix to wax, that which helped take ‘Geht’s Noch?’ out of the underground and into the stratosphere. Twenty years on, and Flügel’s offbeat hit is always ascending. Love it or hate it, ‘Geht’s Noch?' will still get you good.
