Doris Duke’s version of Marlena Shaw’s seminal, powerful “Woman Of The Ghetto” originally appeared on her third album ‘Woman’ in 1975. It’s a searing version, Duke’s full-bodied and fierce voice adding even more urgency to the searing social commentary embedded in the lyrics. On the flip is another SAM Records classic. “Free” by Rhyze is a disco-monster. A sure-fire staple for some of the biggest DJs and diggers out there. The Demon Singles Club has been digging deep again and this time they have unearthed a trio of delights from Travis Biggs. Biggs played the keys with Isaac Hayes towards the end of the 70s when Hayes was playing with disco sound. During that same era, Biggs went it alone on a pair synth laced and spaced out albums 1976's Challenge, on TB&C, and 1979's Solar Funk, on MCA subsidiary Source. The trio of cuts on this 12" come from the latter of those two - one of them will be particularly recognisable to J Dilla fans for the famous beatmaker sampled it quite famously.

Leroy Burgess had already left a huge mark on Black American music by the time the 80s rolled around thanks to his part in Black Ivory alongside Patrick Adams, but he was about to hit on a purple patch of productivity scattered with one-shot gems like Convertion. The project was a family affair featuring the likes of his adopted brother James Calloway on bass, his cousin Sonny T. Davenport on drums and his sisters Renee J.J. Burgess and Dorothy Terrell on backing vocals. The lead track they recorded, 'Let's Do It', is a prime slice from 1981, in the years of transition from disco to boogies and it sounds as great as it did back then. The original B-side of the split release, a mellow ballad by Four Flights entitled 'All I Want Is You', is present and correct on this reissue from Demon Singles Club too

The Demon Singles Club series continues to offer-up classic disco and boogie cuts on 7" singles. For the series' latest release, they've once again mined the vaults of the iconic SAM Records imprint, emerging with the 1980 debut single from Glen Adams Affair. A-side 'Just A Groove' is a genuine boogie-era disco classic - a Clavinet heavy, B-boy and B-girl friendly workout rich in rubbery disco bass, sustained piano motifs, crunchy drums and a typically celebratory lead vocal, whose lyrics extol the joys of a 'groove to make you move'. Over on the flip side you'll find original B-side 'We've Got To Make It', a pleasingly up-tempo, flash-fried disco-funk floor filler that makes great use of heady slap bass and spacey synths.

Featured on the groups only album I Saw The Future, U Sure Do would go on to peak at no 4 in the UK charts and number one in the UK Dance Singles Charts. Beginning her career in 1985 recording and performing with The Curtis Ohlson Band, Rosie Gaines came to notoriety when she became a member of Prince & The New Power Generation. After the released her fifth album, Closer than Close in 1995 she was dropped from Motown Records yet two years later, a remix of the title track from the album was released as a single by Big Bang Records, after it had appeared on bootlegs. Newly remastered, this single features mixes from the creator of house music himself Frankie Knuckles and legendary house & garage producer Tuff Jam.

Drawn from years of early-hour sets and the quiet intimacy of the booth before the room fills, Gimme The Sun marks the debut EP of Al-Veez (real name Alvise Marino). A seasoned guitarist raised in Italy with musical roots in funk, boogie, and blues, Marino’s release is a sonic travelogue of his formative years as a selector in a city, NYC, that quietly became home. The prominent guitar captures both the ache of departure and the bright, restless hope of return.

With a wistful blend of beachy, meandering textures, lush synth layers, and a hypnotic pulse, the EP lands in time for another steamy summer in the city—sure to strike a chord with longtime NYC house heads, whether they be behind the booth or lost in the crowd. Arranged in close collaboration with TSoNYC label boss Danilo Braca (also on mixing and mastering duties), theshimmering title track reads like a Dear John letter to New York. Tender, honest, and full of gratitude, it’s the kind of farewell only a true love could inspire—one that dances forward even as it looks back.

As the record warms up, “F Train Boogie” evokes snapshots of bright midsummer mornings gazing out a scratch-blurred train car window at the glistening city, while the track that follows, “Sneaky”, sizzles with cosmic allure—an intoxicating blend of luminous synths, tightly interlaced rhythms, and a commanding kick drum that locks the listener into an entrancing groove from the very first bar. “Underwater”, the fourth and final track, shares some of the same allure and mystery, but features a playful optimism, encouraging the listener to lean into curiosity of what the next chapter, night, or DJ set will hold.

Nothing truly predestined Frédéric Inthavisay, aka 2Fresh, for the musical career he has today. No musician parents, no academic training—his entry into music came through the collective. He picked up the guitar with his first punk band, formed during middle school, viewing it as a tool for political expression. It was the 1980s in Ivry-sur-Seine, a stronghold of social activism at the time.
This social commitment connected him with other Ivry-based artists like Merlot, who composed the track *Hallelujha* on this album. Ivry is a melting pot of cultures that offered suburban kids the richness of exchange—and what better way to learn sharing than through music?
This album is a musical family snapshot from the '80s–'90s, blending all styles (hip hop, reggae, funk…), all backgrounds, and all religions. A time that may feel far away today, but one we still enjoy listening to.

It all began in this southern suburb, where 2Fresh built his musical family—his friends, his “brothers and sisters,” as Sydney, the iconic host of the show *H.I.P. H.O.P.*, would say. Sydney lends his groove to the tracks *2Fresh Familly* and *Walkin’ in the Night*.

Malka Familly, KGB, and singer-bassist Guillaume Farley also crossed paths with 2Fresh and joined him on the tracks *Ta dose de Malka*, *Ghetto Youth*, and *La surface*.

2Fresh’s musical journey coincides with the birth of hip hop and the digital revolution of the '80s–'90s. Musicians were gradually replaced by early samplers, and DJ-producers began to rise. 2Fresh became a DJ alongside Dee Nasty, who features on the track *Ghetto Youth*, dedicated to the label created by his mentor Rud Lion.

With EJM, Abuz, Doc Shadow, and Little P, we get the chance to reconnect with pioneers of French hip hop on tracks like *94 Une couleur, un chiffre* and *Dans mon salon*.

2Fresh played in iconic French music groups of the '80s/'90s, such as Mad In Paris and Tonton David. This journey is told with emotion by Driss and Kiro on the track *Toujours présents*, and with high energy by Mad In Paris on *Gogo*.

The album 2Fresh Familly is a true gem, a collector’s item for the old school heads and the young timers alike.

First Word Records are proud to present the debut single from Above The Clouds (aka kidkanevil & Magic Manfred) with their instrumental take on an MF DOOM classic, 'Arrow Root'. One of the original First Word roster, UK Producer/DJ and all-round laptop music geek kidkanevil has developed a distinctive and progressive sound over the years, gleefully exploring the beats and bleeps of the electronic music universe to international recognition. Leeds born, sound system bred and raised on a (un)healthy diet of video games and anime, his solo work inhabits the curious space between bass frequencies and otaku culture. But as a devoted teenage backpack rap nerd, somewhere in the back of kid's mind was a lingering desire to reconnect with his first love, hip hop. Not long after moving to Berlin he joined a studio space in graffiti plastered Kreuzberg, where he met multi instrumentalist wizard Magic Manfred; a disciple of all things boogie, disco, funk and soul. Born and raised in Berlin, and currently a touring musician for many an act, Manfred's musical map joins the dots from piano lessons at four, to starting a band with his teenage friends, leading him to his true calling - the bass - via the club vibrations of his hometown, which introduced him to the world of DJing and production, and a stint studying in the explosive London jazz scene to finalise his Jedi training. Bonding over their mutual love of '90s hip hop, a friendship and musical kinship developed, coupled with a desire to honour past eras but push things forward, Above The Clouds was born; named after their joint favourite DJ Premier beat, with a touch of irony regarding their basement based studio of a windowless variety.This one is backed up on the flip side with 'Tram Delay Beat'; a low slung neck-snapper teasing more of what's to come.

Born in 1952 in Dabola, Guinea, Ousmane was heir to the tradition of the Griots, the storytellers, poets and musicians who had served for centuries as the guardians of West African cultural heritage. He picked up the guitar and balafon in his early years and formed a youth band in his teens, but it was while studying agriculture at Kankan University that he decided to devote his life to music.



He moved to Bamako where he soon fell in with Mory Kanté and Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako, who were busy forging a modern Mandingue sound. He performed occasionally with the band and, when they finally broke up in 1977, he was asked to join guitarist Kanté Manfila and singer Salif Keita in a new venture. The newly-formed Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux relocated to Abidjan, where they came to the attention of legendary Beninese producer Badmos. Their electrifying first album, released in 1978, made them stars throughout West Africa.



After a few years of touring, Ousmane decided to focus on his own compositions and went to the esteemed JBZ Recording Studio in Abidjan. Accompanied by his fellow musicians from Les Ambassadeurs, Ousmane recorded “Kefimba” – named after the all-black bull from his childhood with whom he had shared his Manioc meals – and “N’Ny”; both were released initially on cassette before making their way to vinyl in 1982 and 1983.



Ousmane left Les Ambassadeurs shortly before their split in the mid-1980s, but he continued to work with Salif Keita, serving as his guitarist for more than three decades. After bringing their music to audiences throughout the world, the two friends eventually settled in France – for Ousmane it was the fulfilment of a lifelong aspiration.
