Recently appearing on the mighty Crosstown Rebels with a remix of Shaun J. Wright & Alinka ‘Face The Truth’, sought after duo Audiojack are back serving up a solid two-track release in the form of ‘Turya’. 'Turya' is built for serious heads down sessions fusing subtle acid pads with soaring synths and sonorous spoken words. The hypnotic quality of the teacher’s words beguiles and entrances the dance floor, allowing people to lose themselves in them and its evolving groove. ‘Event Horizon’ is a different beast altogether, with a heavy drum and bass vibe, a four-four format, and a classic "amen" break beat style. Richard Burkinshaw and James Rial aka Audiojack have been at the forefront of underground electronic music for nearly a decade now with the duo dropping their first full length EP on 2020Vision in 2006, entitled 'White Noise'. Here the duo return to the label with a fresh single, following recent output which saw them collaborate with LCD Soundsystem's Nancy Whang for a single on Gomma, and a string of material and remixes on their hugely successful Gruuv imprint. Title cut 'Drop The Dime' opens up the single here, seeing the duo embrace the rugged house sound they do so well, the track's laid over six and a half minutes in an ever-intensifying fashion, fuelled by raw rave chords, crunchy drums and gradually building, subtle processing. 'Winding The Box' follows, this time displaying Audiojack's undeniable ability to craft something both unique and charming, as the name would suggest the melodic aspects of the record focus on a dreamy music box sound and hypnotic vocal murmurs, while the heady bass tones and organic percussion adds some grit to the otherwise celestial sound palette. The package is then rounded off with 'Blackout', taking things back into darker realms as the pair fuse shuffling rhythms, a bumpy bass hook, stab sequences and emotive Rhodes lines into a baroquely blossoming dynamic composition. Audiojack's last 2020 single the 'Get Serious' EP was a seriously big release, and it's taken them the best part of year to follow it up with another amazing set of three tracks. This EP is a fine example of the juxtaposition between their tried and tested dancefloor techniques and a more refined, experimental sound. 'No Equal Sides' is classic Audiojack. Supremely produced, rolling deep house that builds up to a old skool breakdown, that always keeps a dubby feel due to that fat baseline that glues the track together. 'Tunnel Vision' may well surprise a few people as it showcases a real soulful side to the Audiojack sound. Norwegian talent Meera makes her Crosstown Rebelsdebut with the atmospheric ‘Stikk’. Riding the success of her debut single ‘Music For Humans’ in 2023, Norway’s Meera was swiftly recruited by Damian Lazarus, joining him at his Hï Ibiza residency before heading to Rebellion for the release of the resonant ‘Teflon’. The sought-after artist has shown no signs of slowing, releasing a series of remixes this year amongst European shows, festival appearances, and Ibiza pit stops. Mathew Jonson has developed one of the most distinctive voices in electronic dance music. His take on house and techno is rich in synth craft and high on captivating emotions, all shaped by his notoriously extensive collection of analogue and hardware gear that he can play, manipulate and use like few others. An electronic mastermind renowned for releasing countless seminal tracks and albums, both solo and as a member of Cobblestone Jazz, he returns to a label that has been a constant throughout his career. With his ‘Tako Tako’ EP, he offers two more superb journeys on Crosstown Rebels. Following on from his impressive debut appearance on the imprint with ‘Il Lupo’ alongside Italian talent Tooker, revealing the first single from his forthcoming album, the Istanbul-based talent is back on Crosstown Rebels with another gem taken from the project as he reunites with singer-songwriter Idil Mese for the excellent ‘Heart Pieces’ - with remixes from Crosstown and Rebellion regular Mustafa Ismaael, and legendary house talent and Warp favourite Nightmares On Wax. Slow-blooming and resonant throughout, guided by Mese’s soulful and emotive vocals, vibrant sax melodies and trippy background samples, ‘Heart Pieces’ is a dazzling slice of laid-back, jazz-infused house music full of subtle elements. Remixing the record, Mustafa Ismaeel leans towards late-night hours with a remix drenched in rolling percussion and sweeping leads, while Nightmares On Wax takes the track in two directions - opting for loose drums, hazy tones and chugging grooves across his first take before laying the focus solely on the musical elements with his ‘Club Dub’. Oceanvs Orientalis teams up with Italian artist Tooker and joins the Crosstown Rebels roster with ‘II Lupo’, including a remix from Acid Pauli. Hailing from Istanbul, Safak Oz Kutle, also known as Oceanvs Orientalis, is a true maestro at crafting hypnotic, evolving sounds while blending a diverse mix of Turkish, Kurdish, Arabic and Armenian influences. Unfolding after a busy year of performances at venues across the globe, including a notable appearance at Crosstown Rebels’ Rebel Rave at Club Space Miami, he now combines his signature downtempo sound with the talents of Italian native Tooker, a partnership two years in the making. Returning to Classic with his first solo original in 20 years, prolific producer and audio engineer Lance DeSardi unveils ‘Higher’, a three-track release featuring vocals from Jesse Rennix. “After releasing my album 'ÖÐRUVÍSI,' which was a very personal and emotionally challenging project, I felt the need to make something weird and energetic for the club. I’m really into tunes that feel both slow and fast simultaneously. The first track on the EP, 'Let’s be Havin u,' was initially hard to place genre-wise, i ended up sending it to Darren, who loved it and wanted to sign it. Releasing on Exit kinda feels like earning a black belt as a producer hah. I never imagined that a decade after buying Exit 12”s in 2014, I’d be releasing my own music on the label. When I started making the EP, I had just begun performing again. I often saw people on the dance floor, too out of it to enjoy the music and often some of them having to be carried by their friends to backstage. This made me wanna make tunes for the dance floor as a bit of a statement on this. I first tested 'Let’s be Havin u' at Prikið in Reykjavik, sounded mad on the little old funktion one. The moment I knew that I was onto something with the EP was when I was Performing in Bristol at Thekla for my friend Boofy. It was wild, the ceiling started leaking during the show. I Love Bristol, feels like home to me. Most of the percussion and hats on the EP are made with an Elektron Model Cycles, and the synths and pads are from a 80s Yamaha hybrid FM/sample synth I found at a thrift store. It doesn’t have MIDI, so I have to record perfect takes for chords and melodies. I often use pedals afterwards or resample the sounds for more tonal control. I enjoy digging for records with unique breaks to sample, as I feel this is lacking nowadays. I usually make all my drums from scratch but when I use breaks I like it to be something I haven’t heard before. The alien percussion sound in the last track is actually me biting my teeth together, resampled repeatedly and ran through pedals and interfaces. I also recorded myself chewing gum for the second track to give it that hand on the hip feel. Most of the EP is made with hardware, outboard gear, or real-life recordings. I’m not concerned about the EP fitting a specific genre or playlist. Too many artists play it safe by focusing on their Spotify stats and abandoning projects that don’t work instantly. I think also Obsessive nostalgia stifles innovation, keeping things stuck in a loop by replicating to the tee, tunes from 2 decades ago. I get it, but there has to be a middle ground sometimes. More
