With the EP Mental Scapes, ALVA shows a first short format resolutely house. Every track is an evolution, a progress. Downtown - with its rhythmic part supported by the disco and deep atmospheres - is reminiscent of the influence of the 90s French house on the duo's tracks. The Shore is a very deep production with a groovy and a minimal bass, with these incisive hi hats and rides, and this sensual vocal. Lighthouse uses several musical registers between techno, soul and NY house. The outro, Playground, recorded in one shot, is a short downtempo track to enclose in a groovy way this first EP from the Parisian duo.

Catherine Ringer (from Rita Mitsouko) sings Müller & Makaroff (from Gotan Project) This is the story of two worlds sizing each other up, meeting and getting to know each other. On one side, the Argentinean Eduardo Makaroff and the Swiss Christoph H. Müller, the two pillars of Gotan Project, looking for extracurricular activities: to establish a bridge between tango and pop music, with original themes. To help them do this in style, a few female singers agreed to step out of their usual repertoire (rock? jazz? flamenco?). So they started to write for these singers and established a list of singular and prestigious vocalists outside of the world of tango. On the other side, Catherine, who in the recent years managed to impose the name Ringer, one of France.s great voices, who very serenely succeeded in building a career for herself after the Rita Mitsouko: after 30 years in a band that marked French rock forever with its peculiar style, she has bravely established herself as a solo artist. And then. A phone call was enough. Müller, a die-hard fan of the Rita, suggested Catherine Ringer. Makaroff tried his luck. Immediately, Catherine said: .Who does this gorgeous Argentinean accent belong to?. Makaroff mumbled: .Well, I have a project that.s not typical, or nostalgic, or Gotan, or Rita Mitsouko.. .Why don.t you tell me what your project is about?., was her answer. Edouardo took it as an encouragement. The Gotan pair brought her the lyrics and arrangements for two songs. She recorded the vocals. They were amazed by her ease. Christoph Müller called it .organically natural.. Catherine loved the project. She has a penchant for all things Latin: remember .Marcia Baila., one of Rita Mitsouko.s most emblematic songs, a tribute to Marcia Moretto, an Argeninean dancer based in Paris with whom Catherine had worked before starting Rita. She also sang in a musical by Argentinean director Alfredo Arias. And it.s clear that .La Ringer. loves to perform and change styles. .Tango also belongs to me because it.s universal. I always loved singing old sad, nostalgic French songs., she says, .and I find it similar to tango.. It.s true, that repertoire suits her grain of voice. And with a soupcon of French accent, it.s absolutely perfect! They asked her to sing - in Argentinean Spanish, of course . on the entire record. They called it Plaza Francia. According to Gustavo Beytelmann, the legendary Paris-based Argentinean tango arranger, who worked on Plaza Francia: .She has a tango personality, which is rare.. This untraditional tango reaches out to pop music with a rhythm close to Catherine.s musical past, and with climatic effects in the orchestration. This is all ensconced in Beytelmann.s silky setting of piano, bandoneon and strings. It.s more than tango, it.s France meets Argentina, Piazzolla meets Santana. The lyrics, signed Makaroff (Eduardo and his brother Sergio), speak the language of tango: heartbreak, drama, exile. and love. This is no small event, for with this record, Catherine Ringer opens the doors to the Americas, opened one century before by another French lady. Edith Piaf. From Buenos Aires to Nueva York, she has a good number of ears to seduce. She.s about to surprise the world, for once again, .La Ringer. demonstrates that she has more than one string to her musical bow!

Disco Music is probably one of Toy Tonics’s catchiest tracks. Played by DJs like Palms Trax, A-Trak, Louie Vega, Folamour and tons of other big names, this track could become a anthem for the new wave of disco that is invading the clubs 2024. After techno and trance revivals of the last year not just the italo disco movement has become massive among the younger generation but all kinds of afro, latin, new wave and indie disco are invading the dancefloors.

Fimiani who made this track, inspired by a rare old song from the 1970ies played all instruments himeself with a group of friends (no samples).

The Crystal Hum is the debut vinyl release by Taiwan-based artist Yuching Huang and her first release for Night School.
A beguiling dreamscape of crackles, spluttering, love-struck Casios presided over by the the spectral vocal and guitar
work of Huang, Yuching sings love songs at the end of this world and the beginning of the next. Recorded during a
hiatus from her group Aemong (a duo with artist Henrique Uba) in Berlin, these songs elevate Huang’s unique vocal
style and grasp of atmospherics. The Crystal Hum deconstructs balladry, Garage, guitar music and reforms it into a
unified ghostly otherworld version of these languages.

The Crystal Hum thrums with buried desire, trails of nocturnal reverb seeping out of apartment windows, diaristic vocal
performances and deeply emotive, evocative Western-style strings. Formulated by Yuching Huang after periods of frustration
and experimentation, the album is an exercise in minimalism and paring back, with some tracks like JohnJohn featuring little
else than an elastic bass, spring reverb trails, an interjecting vocal and swelling, dislocated synths. The effect is spellbinding,
the soundtrack to getting lost in the labyrinthine, closed streets of Venice, Taipei, Hong Kong, or mirror versions of them in the
imagination.

On opener Fly! Little Black Thing, a subterranean funk bassline roots Huang’s singing, a rudimentary, unreliable beat
floundering in whimsy underneath. Demure, dream Dance music, Huang references classic lo fi experimenters Suicide and
Arthur Russell as well as Night School label mates The Space Lady and Ela Orleans. In fact, after the release of Aemong’s
third album Crimson, Huang credits the direction of The Crystal Hum to being enchanted by The Space Lady’s Greatest Hits,
the landmark lo-fi recording made by Susan Dietrich Schneider in 1990. The new, minimalist approach to her sound world
reveals and shrouds in equal measure. On the heart-melter Love, a sultry mid-tempo Casio + bass backing drops into the ether
with Huang’s vocal swimming in preternatural void before emerging anew, in awe at the world. Every chord change heralds new
perspectives, every guitar flurry swells and drips emotion, nothing is wasted and space billows out from between the grooves.
Huang never reveals more than necessary, making this an in-between love album: the right amount of mystery and darkened
mirror shines wanely on The Crystal Hum while remaining fragile and vulnerable in the sweet spots. Turning over in pillowing
smoke and night in the dark corners, Huang sings in both Mandarin and English. The songs speak of earthly matters seemingly
at the edge of dissipating into nothing. Distorted, beguiling Sambas warble like sweating dancehalls in an imagined Lynchian
60s, as on Thoughts. Closer You, An Illusion warps a classic 60s Girlgroup bassline beloved of the likes of Les Rallizes

Denudes into a slight ballad on the edge of the void, held back by the teary-eyed, wistful and enveloping vocal cooed by
Huang. Each song feels like a love song dedicated to the bits between worlds, between beats, the negative space between
people where desires, feelings and loss hangs in the air, resolute and unresolved.
