It's been 40 years since Michal Turtle released his seminal, ground-breaking album "Music From The Living Room" into the world and promptly disappeared back into the aether.
An extremely obscure cult classic known only to deep diggers and aficionados of the finest order, it wasn't until Music From Memory reissued some of the tracks from it via retrospective compilations of Turtle's unreleased music almost 30 years later that his name become more widely known and a new generation were able to discover the artist's unique and pioneering style of experimental electronic music production, the majority of it very much ahead of its time, and to this day, still timeless.
Invisible Inc contacted Turtle in the summer of 2023 about releasing something else by him and it was during this exchange of emails that ideas were expressed about releasing not simply a straightforward reissue of "Music From The Living Room" to mark its 40th anniversary (the album has never been reissued in full) but rather a re-imagined/re-constructed take on the album bringing contemporary techniques, styles and newly recorded vocal and instrument parts into the mix and breathing new life into these wonderful compositions.
Collaborators old and new were brought into the studio and the songs re-created from the ground up. Familiar songs like "Are You Psychic?" and "Village Voice" get overhauled and echo remnants of their original counterparts but simultaneously sound like completely new tracks. The always mesmerising "Phantoms of Dreamland" is represented through a live recording at Café Oto featuring original album vocalist Lucianne Lasalle and regular collaborator HOVE on electronics. The remaining tracks, however, will be completely new to the ears of most people, never having been reissued or heard in these new forms ever before.
Regardless, whether in some way familiar or not, these hypnotic and repetitive pieces of beautiful sound art, all very different in style from one another, have an entirely new identity that even diehard devotees of the originals will fall in love with.

Born in Croydon, UK in 1960 and working in Switzerland for decades, Michal Turtle has led astoried career as a composer, arranger, technician and producer, consistently aligned with someof the most exciting bands and projects within the realms of pop and experimental music. A figureas masterful in the realm of expansive ambient recordings as advertising jingles, its only in recentyears that Michals solo productions have gained acclaim and a cult following that continues togrow ever wider. Turtle made a long-awaited return earlier in 2020 with the extended On a Canvas Lived a Baby, aone-sided twelve of new material released on Planisphere Editorial. Now, the Basel based labelinvites a diverse and international cross-section of electronic musicians to reinterpret the artistsback-catalogue, each delivering a thoughtful remix driven by the same sense of curiosity,exploration and genre-blurring that Turtle himself helped pioneer. Following their release of the Michael Turtle 12” last year, Music From Memory now publish ‘Phantoms of Dreamland’; a compilation of works by the UK musician recorded between 1983-1985. This double LP features tracks drawn from the recording sessions for Turtle’s album ‘Music From The Living Room’ and also collects material Turtle recorded shortly after that, for an album which would never materialise. With three tracks taken from ‘Music From The Living Room’ and the rest of the compilation entirely made up of unreleased tracks, ‘Phantoms of Dreamland’ draws on an illustrious period for Michael. In 1982, at the age of only 22, Michael Turtle set up a portable four track studio in his family’s South London home, over-running his parents' front room with synthesizers, amps and instruments. Here he would create layered and deeply hypnotic tracks that were often built around live jams with musicians he would invite to his home. Although the music can appear to be sample based, all instruments were played live and any voices or sound effects were recorded directly to tape or from tiny cassette loops. Combining electronics with live percussion throughout, ‘Phantoms Of Dreamland’ reflects a deep sense of musical exploration and creates a uniquely other-worldly musical language of its own.

For the second installment in their 12” series Music From Memory present two deeply forward thinking electronic tracks from British musician Michal Turtle made between 1983-4. The first track ‘Are you Psychic?’ is taken from Turtle’s obscure ‘Music From The Living Room’ album which Michal recorded literally in the living room of his family’s South London house at the young age of 22. Over-running his parents' front room with various synthesizers, amps and instruments, and setting up a portable four track studio the ‘Music From The Living Room’ tracks were built around live jams that took place alone or sometimes with musicians he would invite to play alongside him. Whilst seemingly sample based the instruments were played live and any voices or sound effects were actually recorded directly to tape, or put onto tiny 2.5 second cassette loops. ‘Astral Decoy’ was made in the year following the release of his only solo LP and forms part of a series of unreleased tracks that reflect a growing interest in combining electronics with more analogue elements such as Xylophone and live percussion. At the same time this track draws inspiration from the sound of electro and boogie which Michal had become greatly interested in at the time, and in particular the work of musicians such as Grandmaster Flash. With access to the archives of the many recordings made at his family home, this 12” serves as an introduction to a wider compilation of Michal Turtles works which is to follow on Music From Memory.

It’s a decidedly busy time at INVINC HQ at the moment with the 10-year anniversary looming in May.
The six months preceding this date are peppered with a flurry of releases every couple of months, which started with the Mondo Ritmo EP that came in October, the Gamma Knife LP in December and now this brand new album by Sordid Sound System, which lands early March before a rather promising sounding 2xLP compilation lands in May to mark the occasion. ?
It’s been a good few years since something by Sordid Sound System aka Stuart Evans has been released on the label and it’s a welcome return. In our opinion it's some of Evans’ best work and so it’s a pleasure to have him back on board the good ship Inc. ?
Remarkably, this music is even harder to pigeon-hole than usual...even for Stu, who’s known for his raw, analogue, live takes that veer between dub and post-kraut this is definitely quite "different": part surf acid, part dub, part psych-exotica, part motorik...and that's just the A-side. The B-side leans more towards ambience but of the oddball experimental soundtrack variety...a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

It's a monster psychedelic soul-funk instrumental album. This is less jazzy than the “Third Cup” and “The Next One Hundred Years”, released by Chicago’s Cadet label and more cosmic psych funk across both sides and gets super exploratory and trippy.

It's a monster psychedelic soul-funk instrumental album. This is less jazzy than the “Third Cup” and “The Next One Hundred Years”, released by Chicago’s Cadet label and more cosmic psych funk across both sides and gets super exploratory and trippy.

Yore stays on top of the game during this Pandemic, with another repress of one of the labels most sought-after 12 »ches : Librah’s « My Love is 4ever » brings you that Deep and yet playable Classic New York House Sound, which will sure find it’s way into your Bag. Be quick, as these will sell out in just about 2 minutes and 3 seconds.
Not much information is available about Librah aside from the fact that the outfit hails from Sweden and that they released the critically acclaimed deep house twelve-inch “2BWU” on Parkwest in 2012, that brought the Deep House EP of the year for those true Loft heads and lucky clouds. “Out of step”, “Timeless” music. Librah’s follow up release on Yore Records is a sure sign of quality, however, and, true enough, My Love is 4ever is what every House Set needs. The perfect balance between deepness and punch. The release splits two Deep House tracks across its twelve-inch, transparent-coloured vinyl sides (limited to 200 copies), and supplements them with a digital-only bonus mix of the title cut.
The material’s mood is largely one of joy and uplift. The silky smooth title track quickly locks into its snappy house groove at the outset, and then pulls back the curtains to let the sunlight pour in. A bright theme imbues the skipping pulse with flavour, and the track rolls along for seven quietly jubilant minutes, its carefree spirit bolstered by a dreamlike vocal refrain and luscious synthesizer textures.
Unspooling at a slightly slower BPM, the B-side’s “Gravity” opens with a sampled voiceover of grave character (When you live in a poor neighborhood, you’re living in an area where you have to have poor schools / When you have poor schools, you have poor teachers...) before fixating on the tunes insistently swinging and hypnotic instrumental design.
The digital mix of “My Love is 4ever” packs a punch, too, especially when it pounds a bit harder than the original and sweetens the deal with a funky bass part and a twinkly keyboard riff. Despite being obviously similar to the original, the bonus version offers an irresistibly funky and infectious riff on the original, so much so it’s easy to picture the dancefloor filling up in response to it.

mistafide - Equidity Funk
Not much is known about the crew behind 'Mistafide', their government names are listed online but this is the only record they put out using this name. Suffice to say, this has no impact on the fury and style with which the MC's deliver their raps, backed with the studio nous of impresario Peter Brown. Across 12 minutes 'Equdity Funk' is a slamming Disco-rap monster, interpolating elements of the evergreen B-boy jam 'Theme From SWAT' it sounds like everyone just got into the studio and went for it. In the style of the times this is the real hip-hop flavour, a live band, some MC's and some death defying bars being dropped, proper old school. A truly rare recording, 'Equidity Funk' has been one of those records fans of the Disco-rap era have been fiending for for decades - often commanding prices over the $1000 mark you can now grab this slice of essential NYC street Funk.
