Adela Mede - Sing with Us
A year and a half has passed since Slovak-Hungarian artist Adela Mede self-released her debut album 'Szabadság'. Its liner notes described it as "a navigation", a search through "the personal, familial, cultural, folkloric and geographic of her past and present." Her second album, 'Ne Lépj a Virágra' no longer searches; here, she puts down roots and delves deeper into the earthy reality of her home, Central Europe. Mede sings in three languages with newfound conviction and grace – this is an album of profound faith and confidence in the potential of this fertile soil. Composed and recorded during the last 18 months in Bratislava, Slovakia – a city where three countries meet, where the East and the West collide – 'Ne Lépj a Virárga' translates to "don't step on the flower". Its themes – budding potential, recognizing the beauty in the ordinary, solidarity, turning despair into hope – emerged through Mede's wholehearted involvement with her community, teaching singing to both children and adults, and various grassroots volunteering initiatives. It features collaborations with local artists, Mede's singing students, as well as fellow Eastern European contemporary artists Martyna Basta and Wojciech Rusin. Adela Mede embellishes carefully crafted songs with minimalist and folklore influences, but also embraces more experimental approaches. The result is a collection of quite varied yet consistent pieces which highlight Mede's proficiency as a singer, arranger, producer and improviser. It is a grounded, confident next step for the Bratislava-based artist. Whether her vocals are naked, heavily processed, warped and reversed, or looped and layered; whether the production is sparse and minimalist or overwhelming and swampy; none of that changes the fact that the gentle tentativeness of her debut is gone. This is "Central European music", at its most striking and meaningful: patient, determined, embracing both complexity and possibility.

“Ostensibly speaking, Szabadság, the debut album from Adela Mede, is an avant-garde/experimental composition
record with a deep interest in voice. Peel back the layers, and it’s also an art-pop record that reaches for the stars.”
- Dazed
“The vocals on Szabadság navigate between three languages: Hungarian, Slovak, and English. But the melancholy
inflexion in her voice transcends meanings, words, and linguistic systems across any borders.” - The Quietus
“It’s an exploration of what it means to find home across different countries, cities and languages, revelling in the
dis/comfort of a life stretched across borders” - The Wire
Slovak-Hungarian musician Adela Mede explores the interplay between voice and technology with field recordings.
She sings in three languages (Slovak, Hungarian and English). Intimate ambient utterances with themes of spiritual
growth accompanied by experimental electronics with a wide scope of influences; from minimalism to folklore.
Initially released in early 2022 to universal acclaim on digital and cassette, Night School is extremely excited to
share Szabadság on vinyl. Mastered by Rupert Clervaux for vinyl, the clearer format teases out new nuances in the
music, revealing a physicality and permanence to Mede’s first masterwork.
"Szabadság is a navigation. This debut by Adela Mede, recorded in her family home on the Slovakian border with
Hungary, searches through the personal, familial, cultural, folkloric and geographic of her past and present.
Examining both the vulnerability and determination of her voice - as it leaves the lips, raw, and in the ways it can
be transformed with digital processing - the embodied memories of language, of utterance, are explored.
Airy, open sound worlds and tentative strings of improvised naked vocal transform themselves into insistent
repetition. Fizzing, sparkling electronics are set against the beautiful grainy depth of field recordings. The locations,
these places, are found and lost - home is found and lost - in a dance of fragmented vocal harmonies. Three
languages (English, Hungarian, Slovak) weave a song of spring, nature, forgiveness, togetherness and rebirth.”

Polish composer Martyna Basta follows up her well-received label debut Making Eye Contact With Solitude, with her first vinyl release Slowly Forgetting, Barely Remembering on Warm Winters Ltd. It's a multi-instrumental ambient album conjuring scenes from the blurry edge of memory. Martyna Basta uses guitar, zither, processed field recordings and voice to render abstract, compelling images, finding beauty in uncertainty.

Nate Scheible - There's Nothing That Says I Cannot Dream
Nate Scheible's "work of gentle genius" – Fairfax – is arriving on vinyl & all digital services in February 2022. Remastered by Lawrence English and featuring brand new artwork, this edition uncovers a completely new side of the "dreamy and dramatic, meditative and somber" album by the American artist. With fresh treatment from mastering maestro, Lawrence English, this new version has brought out fresh new colours in Scheible's elegant composition. The moments of icy isolation are sharper, while the embrace of the album's finale is warmer and heartier than ever. Scheible's found polaroids on the front of the package also fit so aptly that they barely even feel new. The album's allure and message of craving is more powerful than ever. Scheible's beds of oozing and luscious melodies, decaying on reels or tape, flinging out from plucked bass strings, or rising from a struck vibraphone, are a truly loving soundtrack to this mysterious voice found on a tape that came into the artist's possession.

YokoO & Bobi Stevkovski - Who Are You (Nu Zau Remix)
Partners of the mind and brothers at heart, French YokoO and Macedonian Bobi Stevkovski have come a long way together, and not just behind the decks. Having developed a “true, sincere and remarkable friendship” over the years, these two knew from the get-go that delivering “higher vibrational creations” through Satya was a non-negotiable. Being both men of depth and avid consumers of grooves, they produced two original tracks that will cause early morning hours dance floors to melt. Always aiming at bridging different musical worlds together, they invited Romanian groove masters Arapu and Nu Zau on remix duties. Needing no introduction, the boys completed the EP with rolling remixes that will indubitably keep everyone’s toes tapping at any time of the day or night.

A1) Roman Flügel Remix A2) Original B) Frank Wiedemann Orchestra Remix
Infotext:
We here at Watergate Records are ecstatic to bring you the first single release 'Do Me feat. Khan', from Tiefschwarz in anticipation of their stunning new album, 'Left'. Along with a couple of carefully curated remixes by from two of the most prolific and unique remixers working today, Roman Flügel and Frank Wiedemann, the complete package is a trifecta. The original 'Do Me feat. Khan' is fully rooted in Tiefschwarz's cryptic dance floor approach, intricately balancing the serious and the absurd through the call and response of an almost comedically vocoded voice and a smooth, slick talking murmur. Khan's voice joined with a continually climbing bassline, lush percussive melodies and infectious drums result in a cut that is perfect for, and will shine, any time. Going a different direction by barely using the vocal, but staying very true to the original is Roman Flügel. Taking the original bassline and shortening the loop to 3/4 time, Flügel has devised a hypnotic tail chase that continues from beginning to end only to be accompanied by the whip of a big hi hat and wild 909 claps.
Finally, it's the Frank Wiedemann Orchestra Remix, and it's pretty safe to say that this will be one of the anthems of the year. Aptly titled, the remix is a magnum opus conducted by a master. An enormous ensemble of rich strings and delicate melodies that build and swell from start to finish.

A stone cold old-school classic right here, from the year of 1984. Forged within the furnaces of electro and freestyle, Shannon's sound was ubiquitous in post-disco clubland. Washington DC native Brenda Shannon Greene had a long career and released numerous records that soundtracked 1000s of clubbing experiences across the world, but 'Let The Music Play' was undoubtedly her calling card and still resonates today with it's clipped booming 808s, bubbling acidic bassline and soaring synth lines. An absolute masterclass that rocks for the b-boys, the fly girls and anyone within 2 feet of the dancefloor. Repressed here from master sources for Unidisc's 40th anniversary, an essential club anthem that everyone should own.

Release Notes:
Known principally as a smooth titan of blue-eyed soul, Bobby Caldwell transcended genre tags with consummate ease; he was a musical icon of real class and versatility, cherished the world over. Tragically passing away in March 2023 at the too young age of 71, it still feels as if Bobby's true artistry is profoundly under-appreciated. His double platinum self-titled album from 1978 is a timeless masterpiece of sophisticated jazzy soul brilliance and is strictly canonical. Yes, it's perfect, yet it's been out of press on vinyl for years. We're deeply honoured to present the long-awaited reissue this summer.
Whilst Ned Doheny is known in Japan as "Mr California", native New Yorker Bobby Caldwell has always been "Mr AOR" to his Far-Eastern friends. His distinct charm is an irresistible blend of soul, jazz, and pop influences. He possessed phenomenal songwriting prowess, smooth vocal performances, was both a great soul guitarist and dextrous keyboard player and known for genius chord progressions. It all added up to a multi-layered brilliance entering the studio, and the singular sound he landed on was laced with soulful, sweeping strings and funky horns, touching lightly on disco, while allowing his supple voice to carry the stunning tracks he'd crafted.
String-swept opener "Special To Me" immediately sets the tone with its lush instrumentation, rich harmonies, and Caldwell's velvety-smooth vocals. Next up, a huge one. The infectious, mid-tempo bounce of "My Flame" showcases Caldwell's ability to effortlessly blend catchy pop hooks with soulful arrangements. It's an exquisite, emotive ballad that, at the same time, absolutely SLAPS. Game recognise game, and all that, so, accordingly, Notorious B.I.G. memorably ran with “My Flame” for his 1997 single “Sky’s The Limit”. The rolling, disco-very "Love Won't Wait" is a slick, uptempo track containing heartfelt lyrics intertwined with elegant strings and a horn section to die for. Aching - and achingly cool - single "Can't Say Goodbye" is a real fan favourite, and it's no surprise. It's a laconic, slow-mo jazz-funk stepper, with fantastic, very deliberate playing that closes out the A Side quite exceptionally. "Come To Me" slows proceedings down elegantly to open Side B before the universally agreed-upon masterpiece enters proceedings.
"What You Won't Do for Love," the standout hit that became a classic in its own right, perfectly captured Bobby's ability to infuse a contagious groove with introspective and relatable lyrics. With its instantly recognisable horn riff and Caldwell's soulful delivery, this timeless, chiller anthem continues to captivate audiences and define his musical legacy. He scored huge with the track, taking over the pop and R&B airways with this mellow soul stepper. It has remained a perennial favourite and has been heavily sampled, such is its unique allure; Aaliyah sang over snatches of it on "Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number" and you can hear Caldwell’s vocal sample used for the hook on Tupac’s posthumously released “Do For Love”.
Upon submitting the finished album to his label, they requested more material in hope of a big single. As Bobby remembered to Wax Poetics a few years ago: “Now at this point, I’m mentally exhausted...and bear in mind that I got so close to all the songs I’d written. I gave each song a profound amount of thought, and maybe too much. So, in haste, I went in and cut this song, "What You Won’t Do For Love". Wrote it in a day, cut the rhythm track, overdubbed the horns, I sang the song, and literally turned it in three days after. And lo and behold, the one song I gave the least thought to,” Bobby laughed, “ended up being a national anthem.”
The mysterious, magical "Kalimba Song" is a cosmic, kalimba-driven melodic-funk instrumental - short but oh, so sweet. It's followed by the supreme tear-jerker "Take Me Back To Then", Bobby's otherworldly voice deeply longing for a simpler time, "when life was mellow". I think we can all get behind this sentiment. The final cut is arguably its deepest, its low-key finest moment. For us, it is, anyway. The glorious, driving, effortlessly funky guitar-soul jam "Down For The Third Time" is a huge melancholic Be With favourite and has been played by discerning genre-hopping DJs with significant glee for years. Hypnotic, melodic, beautiful. Like the album it elegantly rounds out.
Bobby sadly passed away on 23rd March 2023, after a long struggle with mitochondrial damage and oxidative stress, due to an adverse effect from a fluoroquinolone antibiotic.
The reissue of his wonderful eponymous album will be available on vinyl across the globe, ensuring that fans of his incomparable talent - and soul music enthusiasts worldwide - can radiate in the deep beauty of this seminal album. Release Info:
Terence Fixmer returns to NovaMute with a new EP, The Swarm out on vinyl on 24 May 2019.
Terence Fixmer’s career has spanned two decades with releases on many acclaimed labels, most recently releasing his sixth solo album Through The Cortex, on Ostgut Ton. His sound deftly avoids repetition by developing soundscapes which maintain musical depth and integrity and he above all preserves an original style, an increasingly experimental, simultaneously ruthless and instantly recognizable aesthetic.
“The title track ‘The Swarm’, I made with the full Roland System 100 [1970s’s vintage semi-modular analogue synth]. I had been collecting all the individual parts of the System 100 and was happy to finally find the sequencer System 100-104. This was the first full track I created with it.”

DJ Scientist - Rega Rega (Revisited)
- Limited edition of only 300 copies
- All copies are handnumbered
For a quarter of a century, DJ Scientist's career has been marked by a steady and continuous presence in the music scene, contributing his skills as a producer, curator, musician, and DJ to various projects and labels, with a particular fondness for vinyl releases.
In celebration of his 25th anniversary, he's returned with two raw instrumental hip-hop tracks on the limited 45 single "Just A Flute Thing." This release serves as a tantalizing preview for his upcoming solo album on Equinox Records.
The title track, "Just A Flute Thing," stands out as an exemplar of funky, yet undeniably raw instrumental hip-hop. 4. SHORT INFO:
Just what the doctor ordered...
Next up on Q1E2 Recordings - for the label's fifth release so far - is Dr Sud. He's a Rome-born, Berlin-raised producer whose music is a fusion of percussion-centric soundscapes and integrated jazz-leaning harmonies, drawing inspiration from diverse genres like electronica, funk, and house.
On 'Heading South', the broken beat don serves up his specialist percussive sound, folding all manner of drums into synth-smothered house. The EP explores the undulating cycle of morning into night, back into morning, inviting you to dance your way through it all.
'Brina', a word which in Italian refers to morning dew - perhaps found on a tent on the morning of a festival - represents the breaking of dawn with broken beats. The track breaks and squints into the start of the day with spacious kick drums leaving room for warm, almost familiar pads and keys.
Then, 'Life Itself' reflects daytime, revolving around an arpeggiating synth that soon makes way for luscious keys.
An excursion into percussive bliss concludes side A in the form of the magical, grin-inducing 'Evening Breath'. This, as you might have guessed, is where the listener cruises through smoothly into the final stages of the day. It encapsulates that last burst of light as the sun sets and a slight shiver of the evening air slivers up your spine.
Then, before you know it, the mysterious night arrives. Flip to that B side, and 'Tramontana' will greet you, inviting you to dance deep into the late hours.
When you're there, the chugging '3/4AM' will hit the spot like an unforgettable dance floor moment, bursting with low and slow Balearic tendencies.
Finally, 'Mondgesicht' - "Moonface" in German -fittingly concludes proceedings with deep lounge vibes. Mumbles of effortless trumpet manoeuvre through a swaying sea of percussion and delicious, wavering synth solo. The day is here again. The cycle is complete.
This is some seriously high-quality music on show here from Dr Sud. The EP is out on Q1E2 Recordings in October.
