**2023 Repress
in 2018 Meitei introduced the world to his wondrous universe with the critically acclaimed 'Kwaidan' tape, seamlessly combining the rich Japanese ambient tradition of the eighties with the sample-based aesthetics of nineties pioneers Susuma Yokota and Nobukazu Takemura without ever sounding retro. With the release of his debut album 'Komachi' it's safe to say he's here to stay. Using field recordings, white noise and the hypnotic sounds of flowing water to create twelve mesmerising soundscapes that sound hauntingly nostalgic yet weirdly contemporary, the Hiroshima-based experimental composer aims to revive the soul of Japan, creating a strangely wonderful dreamworld that's unlike anything else out there right now. Echoes of Steve Reich's minimalist approach merge with the sounds of fading Japanese tradition (the album derives its name from Ono no Komachi, the eighth century waka poet whose mythical beauty and profoundly wistful writing made her a lasting legend) and the forward-thinking attitude of modern genre-defying sound alchemists like J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Teebs and Ras G (RIP). 'Komachi' is a work of rare beauty that deserves to be heard by anyone with an open mind (RO).
Haunting and delicate, distant and timeless, Komachi is awash with white noise, complex field recordings and the hypnotic sounds of flowing water. Though confidently contemporary, like a bucolic J-Dilla, Komachi’s lineage can be traced back to the floating worlds of Ukiyo-e and Gagaku via the prism of 80s Japanese ambient pioneers, and 90s pastoral sample-based artists such as Susumu Yokota and Nobukazu Takemura.
Composed as individual sonic dioramas, each of the twelve tracks have been crafted to not only evoke feelings of nostalgia but to also explore the dichotomy of ancient and new in modern Japanese society. This pervasive narrative runs throughout, calling to mind the work of authors Yasunari Kawabata and Natsume Soseki, as well as the films of Yasujiro Ozu and Hayao Miyazaki, artists similarly fascinated by the reflective tranquillity that permeated traditional Japanese domestic life. Repress!
Voices From the Lake (consisting of Donato Dozzy and Neel) mark the 10th anniversary of their influential self-titled album with a fully remastered reissue on Spazio Disponibile. It arrives in full on vinyl for the first time, as well as on digital formats, first quarter of 2023 as the pair continues to play select live shows around the world. The release will see the light of day as a 4-set vinyl LP release, including download. Italians Dozzy and Neel have been friends united by a shared vision of music since their teenage years. They are immaculate sculptors of sound who fuse evocative ambient and leftfield techno into multi-layered soundscapes. For many years they worked as established solo artists but came together in 2011 to craft what is now regarded as one of techno's most pure and absorbing listening experiences. It's often said that the best music comes about as a happy accident, and that is certainly true of Voices From the Lake. The career-defining album first arose in the thoughts of Dozzy and Neel when the latter was preparing a mix for the former's wedding and named it Voices From The Lake. It was a pertinent title that stuck in the mind: both grew up by waters around the coast of Italy, and in their early days the pair even held private parties on the shores of a lake. Fittingly, Japan's celebrated Labyrinth festival at that time was also held by a river and a lake in the middle of a forest on a serene mountainside. It was that exact setting the pair envisaged when making music to play live on stage. During preparations, they "accidentally" wrote an entire album. It has only ever been performed live a few times - once at Japan's Labyrinth festival in 2011, at London's Barbican, Barcelona's Mira Festival, Paris' Marathon Festival and once during 2022's Amsterdam Dance Event. Those shows saw the pair using banks of analogue and digital equipment to improvise in the moment and essentially remix the album live on stage. That spontaneity is captured in the original Voices From the Lake recordings and on later LPs such as Live at Maxxi in 2015, and the most recent EP Quarto Freddo from 2020. But the debut album remains a standout achievement. A decade on, it's quiet intensity, musical storytelling and slowly unfolding tension remain in a class of one. Each sound is meticulously designed and placed, and the spaces left behind are just as important in conveying such a captivating mood and emotion. Rather than traditional kick drums, hi-hats or snares, this is music crafted from layers of real-world sound - dripping water, chirping birds, rustling leaves or a distant breeze - and it's that which defines the album's organic allure. From deeply contemplative to cautiously optimistic, pastoral organic scenes to more underwater worlds, Voices From the Lake is a cohesive collection of tracks that add up to one inseparable whole. RELEASE INFO:
Almost 30 years after its initial release, and accompanying the re-release of ’Internal Empire’
Tresor Records is proud to present a new pressing of Robert Hood’s essential “Master Builder” EP.
This work elevates its maker as master, and remains a cherished moment in the Tresor story, sharing an
irrefutable singular magic, sounding as present and indispensable as when first created. Originally
released in 1994 and 1995, ‘Internal Empire’ and "Master Builder" mark a point of transition for Robert
Hood moving on from his previous collaborations within Underground Resistance. Robert Hood advanced
uncovering the power of true minimalism. Deep soul through a simplicity that showed how much could be
done with so little. The devastating rhythms of this album forge the unmatched spirit of this sound,
influencing generations to come.
"25 years ago, I was faced with the challenge of following up on 'Minimal Nation'. I cancelled all my tour
dates for that summer, setup my studio in the living room and began to work on 'Internal Empire'. My
intention was to create something distinctively dierent. Looking out my living room window in Detroit
watching people go by gave me a new perspective. It made me look at the world within myself. 25 years
later I am still discovering.” - Robert Hood, 2019 More

Sales Note
Vargmal Records continues to explore immersive, thought-provoking techno with an abstract spirit by presenting Corners EP from the emergent collaborative UK project Terrain. The Kosovo-based label was launched in 2022 with a considered balance of classic and contemporary techno, featuring Italian techno pioneer Leo Anibaldi and commissioning attendant remixes by contemporary Italian maestro Donato Dozzy.
Continuing the label's embrace of subliminal sounds for adventurous dance floors, Terrain deliver four tracks of snaking, subtle rhythms pivoting away from rigid structures towards a more fluid kind of techno. It's a sound the duo of Joe Baker and Voytek Stanley channeled on their debut release and they expand on the principles from that record in superlative style on Corners.
The EP opens up with the weighted pressure of 'Blind Spot', a dense workout pivoting on a fractured kick punching out underneath interwoven sheets of texture and atmosphere. 'Vintage' develops this theme with dubby chord washes which bloom out over the fine detail of the deceptively complex beat configuration. 'Corners' meanwhile adjusts the temperature from cooly meditative to subtly fierce accents Terrain edge into their sound.
It's an elegant fusion that remains at ease with the overall mood of the EP, but a noticeable shift in energy for the B side. 'Singularity' completes the picture with additional input from Localhost, welcoming layers of noisy melodics which sit comfortably on top of Terrain's dubby pulses. More open and searching than the introspection which holds sway elsewhere, it's a tonal shift that opens the sound of Terrain out and brings a sense of balance to their assured second record. More

B2 - The Vendetta Suite Stone Tape Remix
After a summer run of scorching sounds and horizontal grooves that were designed for sandy open air scenarios, Hell Yeah kick off 2019 with some more of their curious curveballs and playful party pumpers. It's time to forget what you know and prepare for a weird and wonderful trip into weirdness with Alexander Robotnick: he is the man behind the music and a track that was previously released on the Coast to Coast 12” in 2013 and soon became a Balearic gabba classic.
Now it gets a second spot in the headlines after label head Marco first heard it played years ago by Justin Vandergvolgen and asked him to edit it. It comes backed with dazzling remixes from Prins Thomas, man of the moment Bawrut and Irish outfit The Vendetta Suite who takes things in more of a weird and wonderful direction that the label also deals in.
Alexander Robotnick is a legendary Italian producer who had a big hit in the 80s with ‘Problèmes D'Amour’, produced many bands in the 90s and founded his own Hot Elephant label in the 2000s. From Italo-disco to electro he is a master synth manipulator who can go into new romantic o synth pop territory with an always futuristic vision. The original track on this EP was dropped by the likes of Gerd Janson, Dixon, Jackmaster and Peggy Gou in DJ sets and Boiler Rooms.
It is a playful track with a wild, unhinged lead synth line that burrows deep into your brain. Brightly glowing chords have real warmth and add irresistible colour to the track as they ride up and down the scales and the crisp boom bap drums pack a real dance floor punch.
Scandi-disco maestro Prins Thomas remixes it into brilliantly filthy disco cut with rasping bass and hip swaying drums. It builds the tension over three minutes, locking you in before psychedelic leads burst out of the mix and carry you into the cosmos.
Then it’s the much loved current champ Bawrut, whose old Scuola Furano project label boss Marco was the first to release on vinyl back in the early 2000s on Mantra Vibes. His version is a pumping old school house remix, with analogue bass and that unhinged lead synth line bringing the madness. It's filled with raw energy and will blow up any floor.
Last of all, The Vendetta Suite follows up his Solar Lodge 23 EP on this label in 2017 with a remix that is perfectly dreamy. His rippling synth puddles and sci-fi motifs are brilliantly rich and glowing and fill you with warmth. It's the sort of mind expanding track that leads you into a world of cosmic curveballs and cut from free the real world.

Niko Tzoukmanis - Fallen Angel
In the realm of computer-generated music, all compositions are essentially binary, consisting of zeros and ones, representing data and information. Within this binary structure, every musical event exists amidst a backdrop of unchosen possibilities, creating a sense of absence and mourning for what could have been. The bittersweet emotional quality often found in certain electronic music may stem from a combination of its underlying aesthetic principles, a yearning for a lost vision of the future, and the subtle interplay between presence and absence inherent in the creative process itself.
Released for the first time on vinyl and including 2 unreleased tracks, Tales From The Silent City is a deep electronic journey with the unmistakable Niko Tzoukmanis's sound and sensitivity. The album features sequences that shimmer and persist, while gentle pads offer soothing relief to weary listeners.
Tales From The Silent City not only draws inspiration from a nostalgic era of sequencer-driven music but also anticipates the trend of seeking solace in '90s-influenced ambient techno during uncertain times.
