Micky Finn Presents Bitin’ Back - Boom Box
Bitin’ Back is Micky Finn’s debut release. Originally written in 1989, it wasn’t released until 1991 on Fokus Recordings. Heavily played in the warehouse parties, illegal parties and pirate radio stations at the time, these are two breakbeat tracks that are made to make you move.
The record is presented in a full colour housebag designed by Micky himself, which includes the opening lines of the Six Million Dollar Man printed on the bag, the source of the vocal sample on ‘She’s Breaking Up’.

The life-affirming energy at the heart of Sven Väth‘s recent album Catharsis is revisited, reanimated,
and remixed by some of the most exciting names around, closing the circle on a superlative burst of
recent work that has not only given us the epic original LP, but also the extraordinary compilation What
I Used To Play.
Roman Flügel, Benjamin Damage, Robert Hood, Planetary Assault Systems, Mano Le Tough… do we
need to go on? This hand-picked list of luminaries have answered the call and certainly don’t
disappoint, each fusing their signature sound with Sven‘s DNA to create a wild, uncompromising
companion piece to the original album.
True to form, the running order is very much rooted on the dance floor, Silvi‘s Dream, revisited by
Damiano von Erckert, explodes like a Balearic sunrise. Dreamy strings with a touch of Detroit create a
lovely atmosphere while the beautiful piano sound goes right into your heart and appears as if you
could feel the warm sun on your skin. Roman Flügel’s acidic rework of What I Used To Play is a
homage to the 80s and the early sound of electronic music which creates nostalgic feelings and offers
a greatly produced retro soundscape à la Kraftwerk. Staying close to the original, but with the perfect
amount of spin, it’s a symbiotic interplay of synthetic bass pads, and a tiny bell melody. Robag
Wruhme’s cranking minimal funk takes us down The Worm-hole. A concise interference sound builds
up sustained tension, tangled but structured, deep and yet driving. Robag took over the deep and dirty
rhythms of the original perfectly and delivers a versatile piece. This opening salvo oozes quality and
sets things up perfectly for the electrified celebration of hi-octane technology come.
Jonathan Kaspar‘s growling interpretation of We Are provides a melancholic atmosphere with
fascinating percussion parts. Zaps shoot through the air like small laser pistols while we let ourselves
be carried away by the bass, the frisky vocal stutter effect is the icing on the cake. Speeding things up,
the euphoric trance that engulfs Krystal Klear’s epic version of Feiern. Expansive strings increase up
to ecstasy and guide us to a love-filled unity. This remix is sure to be an excellent peak-time smasher
for the open-air season. On to a wild ride of pure techno with Benjamin Damage, who delivers a dry
and uncompromising Berlin Techno version of Mystic Voices. Harder pace but the string synthesizer
harmony brings light to an otherwise gloomy environment. Next up is Luke Slater’s PAS Deep Heet
Mix to add a retro nineties vibe to proceedings on Nyx. Entering a rough space with gigantic clap
impacts, we are blessed with straightforward Techno. Shimmering and spooling, this groove hits the
mark. Then, as if it was ever in doubt, Sven‘s lofty place in the techno firmament is underlined by a
peak-time contribution by non-less than Detroit legend Robert Hood. Unmistakable, you must
recognize the signature Robert Hood drive on Butoh. Chord stabs fulfill the Detroit feeling with offtaking string elements and high-energy vocal transformations. It’s a warm embrace that triggers
emotions. Planetary Assault Systems then blasts things ever deeper into the cosmos on a second
outing of Nyx. Reduced and to the point but of course, true to form, with powerful tribal percussion
parts and intensive cutting hi-hats.
From there on in, the collection gradually re-enters the atmosphere, burning with a phosphorescent,
melancholy glow. Harald Björk extrapolates Being In Love into a hypnotic groove for the early hours. A
playful and atmospheric electronica interpretation to soothe our souls due to disharmonious synth
pads and a dreamy deformation of the original melody. Mano Le Tough harnesses the ethno-rhythms
and brooding energy of Catharsis into a low-slung, tribal stomper. Anomalous organ parts ring out and
link up with a trance-like sequence, summer feelings arouse as you feel like you can almost smell
Ibizan air. The collection comes full circle with a second equally seductive interpretation of Silvi‘s
Dream by Florian Hollerith. Stripped-down and hypnotic, the homage to Sven's girlfriend Silvi is
extended as a reverence to Sven himself. Sven's profound vocals clearly infuse time and space and
leave a forever-lasting memory of love.
By accident or design, it somehow leaves us with the reassuring sense that, although this specific part
of the journey may be drawing to a close, the mission of the man behind it all most definitely isn't.

Release Info:
Even if Ancient Greek isn’t part of general knowledge anymore, the word mega is. Hence, you might admire our modesty to say that Roman Flügel’s first outing on Running Back in 2022 is perfectly headed. Greta, large, mighty and somewhat the love- or brainchild of his earlier Garden Party and the previous D.I.S.C.O., Mega pulls out all the stops: hi-nrg melodies, circus bells, cowboy funk and honey hooks at 140 beats per minute. While it is nearly impossible not to take this bait or decorate it with the Bobby-O medal of honor, Roman proves one more that you can be catchy and classy at the same time.
Rules on the other hand, puts some of these stylistic devices in reverse or down-tempo mode and feels like brushing your teeth after an extended feast or the perfect hors d’oeuvre.
Completing the picture with Film 1, Film 2 and Film 3, Flügel flexes his freethinking muscles and lands in-between art school new wave bands and soundscape science. Music that is masterly made, magical in its impact and perfectly described with a misquoted line from Get The Balance Right: it’s never predictable.
Short:
New EP by Roman Flügel on Running Back. Following 2020s Garden Party euphoria and it’s successor D.I.S.C.O., Mega is their beautiful love- or brainchild with Hi-nrg melodies and hone hooks clocking in at 140 bpm. Added to the menu are four more tracks that test the limits between down-tempo tropes, soundscape science and new wave art school aesthetics.

Repress!
As C418, composer and producer Daniel Rosenfeld designs sounds to resonate in both physical and pixelated realms. Best known for his original soundtracks to Minecraft, the single best-selling video game of all time, he’s developed a discography of instrumental music over the last decade that traverses electronic pop patterns, neo-classical dreamscapes, and sparse ambient motifs. The latter element has broken from the “8-bit” pigeonholing of game music and earned him accolades that reference artists like Erik Satie (The Guardian) and Brian Eno (VICE). In 2015, after quietly self-releasing Minecraft Volume Alpha and Minecraft Volume Beta, Rosenfeld partnered with Ghostly International to reissue Minecraft Volume Alpha on vinyl and CD. The release garnered attention from proper music critics and the gaming community alike, becoming one of the most sought after records in the Ghostly catalog. Now, following several restocks of Alpha to fervent fan response, it is time for the soundtrack’s second installment to shine. For the legion of listeners and players to, at long last, have Minecraft Volume Beta in tangible formats. The double LP arrives in August 2020 on standard black and fire splatter colored vinyl, available in regular sleeves as well an exclusive limited-edition jacket with a lenticular cover which gives depth and movement to its 3D-rendered image.
Originally self-released in 2013, Minecraft Volume Beta was C418’s longest batch of music to date at nearly 140 minutes. The collection features tracks that were "silently" added to Minecraft during its music updates and a few that never officially entered the game. The run time is now adapted to fit the double LP format, while digital downloads include the full set. Rosenfeld’s unmistakable abilities are on display; he creates a sweeping variety of musical ideas that mirror the limitless universe of Minecraft. Ghostly International is thrilled to give this unique collaboration its due treatment and hopes to see the creative inspiration which drives Minecraft and Rosenfeld continue to disperse by virtue of this unexpectedly universal music.

ETNOBOTANIKA - Piochy
Approximately 3 years after the release of their debut album, ETNOBOTANIKA are back. Lesne Duchy is yet another joint release from the Silesian duo, coming out on the collaborative efforts of Superkasety Records and The Very Polish Cut Outs. These are still the sounds of a dusty old cassette, however this time the digging didn't take place in the allotment gardens, but rather somewhere in the woods, within a thick layer of moss. Hauntology and nostalgia still play important roles yet they are no longer in the foreground. Certain associations with primordial magic, wild backwoods and unspeakable mysteries come to the fore. The ambience encapsulated in these tropes is the key to understanding this album. One can, of course, mention that sonically the producers are once again flirting with dubtechno, ambient and sampled collages, but all these genre clichés are only tools resulting from the individual inspirations and experiences of Alergeek and Uwdar (i.e. the two halves of ETNOBOTANIKA), and are meant to build the right mood, not to put Le?ne Duchy into the tight framework of, say, club music or trip-hop. If this album is to be pinned down to anything, it is probably library music.
The 80 minutes of music spanning two vinyl records and a chunk of cassette tape make for quite a long record, ETNOBOTANIKA however make sure there is absolutely no dullness, precisely thanks to the variety of moods. At times it leads us playfully out into the woods, other times it haunts us a little, but eventually all ends well, and we don't even get the chance to realise that we've been wandering around the green backwoods for over an hour... and we want to go back there again and again.

The life of the solo electronic artist is equal parts privilege and loneliness. You hurtle across
the sky to spend a few hours in a dark club, behind the decks or on stage at the microphone.
A brief grasp at transcendence, then the lights are on. Afterwards, you chat with friends you
made last month, last year, or an hour ago. Back on the train, the plane. A couple weeks of
this, then home. Repeat. It was against this backdrop that Ana Roxanne and DJ Python (Brian
Piñeyro) struck up a singular friendship and collaboration, culminating in the shared musical
language of their new project, Natural Wonder Beauty Concept.
Brian and Ana met in New York City in the winter of 2020. They’d respectively put out
critically acclaimed albums but due to extenuating global circumstances, the real-world
implications of those records were yet to be seen. Ana’s debut LP, Because of a Flower,
released in fall 2020, trades in both ethereality and directness, stretching timeless pop and
R&B forms into shimmering ambient magic. When the Bay Area-born, Mills-trained artist
sings, on record or live, time slows down and we enter a languorous yet ecstatic present.
The second album from Queens-based deep reggaeton innovator DJ Python, Mas Amable,
also subverts easy temporality. Released in spring 2020, Mas Amable floats in liminal space
—not quite a dance record, a downtempo record, nor an ambient record—unfurling at a
wistful pace, naturally suited for a strange period when each day felt the same yet wildly
different.
Well-loved albums aside, no one was playing shows, and a general listlessness and
disconnection prevailed. Roxanne had recently moved to New York, and while the pair had
previously interacted online and expressed admiration with each others’ work, they were
now able to meet in person for the first time. A quiet understanding developed between the
two artists on their initial hangs – they drove around the outskirts of NYC, listening to
Telegram by Björk, HTRK, Portishead, all manner of melancholy acoustic indie songs. They
pulled over in Filipino neighborhoods to eat. Periods of volubility were punctuated by
silence, laughter interspersed with wide-eyed pondering. For Brian and Ana, studio
experimentation was the instinctive extension of a friendship finding its feet.
The duo’s preternatural communication was present from the start. In early, open-ended
sessions at Gary’s Electric Studio in Greenpoint, they arrived on a moody, novel sound
encompassing trip-hop, synth-pop, brittle IDM drums, and samples of classical music.
Piñeyro threw out ideas at a breakneck pace. Ana impacted the sound with subtle,
monumental chord shapes and textures, eventually singing over strange and beautiful beats.
“There was lots of time to make music during the first year we worked on the project,” they
remember. “The winter in New York felt quite vacuous, so we spent a lot of time reflecting
on feeling too much and feeling nothing at all.”
Then, after a heady start on a prospective album, the world reopened. Roxanne and Piñeyro
parted ways for most of 2021. Ana embarked upon her first headlining tours across Europe,
North America, and Australia, quietly commanding large rooms. Python was a fixture in the
sleepless European electronic club circuit. Ana moved away from NYC and back to the Bay
Area. Alone again, they experienced the exhilaration and fatigue of the road. Their lives, and
the project, were in flux.
After a smattering of sessions on the rare occasions they found themselves in the same city,
Brian and Ana converged on Kranky label manager Brian Foote’s home studio in Los
Angeles in the summer of 2022. The songs were taking shape. Dreamy, densely layered
drum programming and atmosphere, redolent of Seefeel and Boards Of Canada, washed against jungle and oddball ambient landscapes. They listened to tracks-in-progress while
driving through the hills at night, lights flickering out in the expanse. The writing process was
entirely collaborative. Ana sang, Brian sang. They dashed off lyrics together, reflecting an
increasingly shared mental state. “You me you / falling in deeper blue / running through a
circle that surrounds you / mango jelly flowers all around you.”
Later that fall, the duo traveled back to Brooklyn for a last round of sessions with engineer
and producer Al Carlson (Oneohtrix Point Never, Jessica Pratt). Their longtime friend CZ
Wang (Parquet Courts, Huerco S.) mixed and finalized the songs in early 2023, and then a
name for the project materialized. Natural Wonder Beauty Concept was “something Ana saw
in the universe.” The self-titled album does not resemble the previous work of either artist –
Ana’s celebrated ~~~ EP and album; Piñeyro’s various releases as DJ Python and DJ Wey or
his recent EP with Ela Minus. Instead, it’s a sui generis work built block by block over two
years. It’s the longest DJ Python has ever worked on a record, and the shortest period of
time Ana has ever dedicated to a project.
Early on in Natural Wonder Beauty Concept, we hear Python singing for the first time, over a
woozy, Actress-influenced beat. He’s a portrait of alienation. “Isn’t it strange that I kind of feel
nothing at all,” he muses. Ana responds to Python’s call: “Wouldn’t you say that I’m a person…
giving you the time…” By the song’s conclusion, Roxanne’s vocals are an enveloping force
over a lilting street bass. “The project gave us a creative license of freedom,” the pair say. “It
was an opportunity to try anything out, whatever we happened to be feeling or influenced
by.” Python and Ana are both known for bittersweet, contemplative electronic music that
feels like a companion in quiet times. With their new project, the two artists have found their
natural, if unexpected, counterparts. Natural Wonder Beauty Concept is the sound of two
brilliant artists learning to be alone, together
