“A synapse-popping electro-acoustic soundwalk around Western Europe's cathedrals, chapels and churches, Campana Sonans skews recognizable sacred soundscapes, proposing a contemporary mythology that muddles the past, present and future. Following on from his critically-acclaimed Bathhouse Blues full-length, American sound artist Jake Muir familiarizes himself with German and British sonic architecture by studying some of the medieval shadows that still hang over Europe's streets, even as they continue to evolve. Manipulating environmental recordings captured in Germany and England, Muir presents an impressionistic juxtaposition of parallel cultures: the UK's distinctive "change ringing" technique, where a team of bell-ringers play long varied sequences on a set of tuned bells; and Germany's more sober style, with monotonous peals that add rhythm to daily life.
When Muir moved from Los Angeles to Berlin back in 2019, it wasn't just the German capital's damp weather and long, dark winters that came as a surprise. He was immediately struck by the city's anomalous acoustics, and one particular element stood out: the resonant church bells that echo around Berlin throughout the day to mark time, and for 10 minutes on Sundays as a call for mass. Gathering his field recording equipment, Muir acquainted himself with his new home by following the sonorous clangs, wandering from kiez to kiez to capture each church's distinct auditory flavor. And the more material he collected, the more engrossed he became in the history of bell ringing, prompting a deep dive that would shuttle him across Germany and into Italy, Belgium and the UK.
On Campana Sonans, Muir trains his focus on Berlin, where his journey began, and on England, where he encountered the most elaborate bell ringing practice. Erzklang is a hypnotic lattice of sounds recorded all over the German capital: at Parochialkirche, a reformed church in Mitte; at evangelical church St. Matthäus, at Sophienkirche, another Mitte landmark; and at St. Mathias, a Roman Catholic church just in front of the Potsdam Gate. By fusing the liturgical chimes with snippets of local ambiance - traffic, chattering tourists and birdsong, for example - Muir takes a blurry snapshot of the city, queering its idiosyncratic color spectrum with his various digital processes. Using reverb to replicate the acoustic properties of both the streets and the church interiors, he subtly disturbs the timeline, stretching out brief peals into long, mesmerizing drones and turning garbled voices into ghostly babble.
The environment alters considerably on Changes; Muir uses the same technique and applies it to recordings made at the 1000-year-old St. Oswald church in Oswestry, St. Bartholomew's, Edgbaston and Holy Trinity in Stratford-Upon-Avon, home to Shakespeare’s final resting place. Here, Muir methodically untangles the change-ringing process, linking back to Erzklang with a single bell tone before moving inside the church itself and documenting the ringers' shouted instructions, blending the calls with the bells' mathematical cyclic patterns. Muir memorializes what in 2025 is a dying art-form - a community skill that's disappearing worryingly quickly as young Brits lose interest in the church and its rituals. Unsettling distortions bite into the undulating sequences and underneath the noise, Muir highlights the music's latent euphoria, drawing out its most celestial tonalities.

Alien D, aka Daniel Creahan, is a staple in the NYC underground, known for his releases on labels including Lillerne, 1432 R and Banlieue Records. On his latest album, For the Early Hours of a World in Bloom – his first for Theory Therapy – Creahan takes us deeper into the dubby landscapes of his previous work, with a renewed focus on groove and movement.
Where Lillerne’s Spiritual World leaned toward ambient abstraction, Early Hours pulses with kinetic energy, with tracks like “Soil Dub” and “Sleepy’s Gambit” propelling us forward with dubwise rhythms crafted for the dancefloor.
The album thrives on its infectious, steady groove, with repeating phrases and subtle shifts that keep the music in constant motion. Nowhere is this more evident than on the gentle roller, “Breather.” Over 13 minutes, Creahan lets small variations in tone and a propulsive low-end evolve gradually alongside Ben Seretan’s guitar.
While Early Hours embraces a more rhythmic direction, it still retains the eccentricity and atmosphere that defines Alien D’s sound. Conceived in the first days after the COVID lockdown, there’s a hopeful quality to the music – flickering tones, soft percussive elements and organic textures that hover just behind the beat – making it feel both intimate and expansive. It’s as though Creahan has bottled those transcendent moments that can occur during the early hours of a party, when everything feels suspended in a state of potential.

Sailing beyond the boundaries of electronic music, Purelink embrace liquidity on their second album, washing live instrumentation and exposed vocals over their patented cascade of dubbed ambience and ebbing rhythmic experimentation. Since 2020, Tommy Paslaski (aka Concave Reflection), Ben Paulson (aka kindtree) and Akeem Asani (aka Millia) have channeled their most euphoric musical whims into the Purelink project. Drifting between brittle '90s drum 'n bass and dub techno on their cult debut 12" 'Bliss / Swivel' and vaporizing Windy City jazz and post-rock motifs with muggy soundscapes on 2023's critically revered first full-length 'Signs', the trio have managed to define a painterly signature sound that's reflective but not reverent. Sure, Purelink's music can be graceful and bucolic, but it's powered by their innate devotion to the dancefloor's soundsystem.

Marco Vella and Anth Wendt step up to International Feel with a five-track EP of Balearic-tinged bliss for their first collaborative release as Other Mother.
There’s definitely something in the air round the Adelaide Hills. Longtime friends Marco (aka Body Corp) and Anth (aka Oisima) finally got together in Anth’s studio after the pandemic and the result is Numero Uno an EP of laidback synth guitar and drum machine workouts mixing 303 riffs and sunsets for a supremely low-slung vibe.
After cruising around the Hills in the day the pair worked on tracks by night and their carefree days soaking up the sun shines through. Opening track About Time sets a steady pace with its lush delayed guitars slow-rising acid melody and hefty sub perfect for Sunday pub garden appreciation. A side closer Zwang! drops the tempo but brings the percussion into focus for another masterclass in tension and release with interwoven 303s and dub feedback.
Side B keeps the beach-side atmos flowing with guitar licks working around sumptuous synth chords for Anyway Music - a song that’s the ultimate soundtrack understated parts fitting together seamlessly in service to the feeling and belying the technique required. Lost In The Forest makes use of expansive ambient pads synth riffs and shakers to evoke a sense of wonder sunlight coming through the trees.
The EP concludes with Where’s The Fifty a dreamy piece of drum synth phrases and 303 interplay that perfectly characterizes Marco and Anth’s collaboration - two musicians and producers playing to serve the song. They write elements that combine for a harmonious whole greater than the sum of its parts. This is the underlying feel of Other Mother and Numero Uno - we’re all in this together - and by working collaboratively a brighter future might just be around the corner.

Initially playing reggae/dub music, the band gradually developed into an innovative fusion of diverse musical influences, such as jazz, soul, psyche pop, new age, and exotica. A sound is based on groove and euphoria, with nostalgic melodies.
They have performed at iconic events in Japan such as Fuji Rock Festival, and also have been looking overseas since they performed in Canada(Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver) in 2019. The new EP "Ramble In The Rainbow"(2024) is their first international release on the US label Peoples Potential Unlimited.
The work shows their musical maturity, drawing inspiration from Sun Ra, Lee "Scratch" Perry, and Yasuaki Shimizu.
