Detroit’s Delano Smith joins My Baby Records to release two soulful originals including remixes from Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts and Chuck Flask & Keith Kemp.
Of the original crop of Detroit DJs, Delano Smith is now one of the last remaing. Coming up at a time when the world was just discovering the influence a DJ could have, Smith battled his way to the top in a tough scene full of talent. His story is long and intriguing, running parallel to many of the developments not just in music but society at large that have shaped our modern world. Delano has continued to DJ worldwide for many years whilst delivering quintessential releases on a consistent basis on labels such as Sushitech, Mixmode, Third Ear, and now My Baby Records following artists such as Remote Viewing Party, Rex Sepulveda & Acid Pimp and Mister Josooa & Rickers.
‘No Fear’ kicks things off with slick bass grooves. The rolling muffled vocals and smooth riding riffs blend together, providing this slick deep house cut with truly intoxicating atmospheres. ‘We Go Back’ delivers organic, stripped-back percussion balanced with soul-infused keys and mellifluous notes throughout the track.
Canadian producer Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts who’s known for releases on Circus Company and Musique Risquée provide a minimal remix of ‘No Fear’ laying focus on aquatic modulations, robust drums and reverberating low frequencies until the Motor City duo Chuck Flask and Keith Kemp round things off with a smooth remix of ‘We Go Back’ offering hypnotic rhythms fused with funk driven synths and shimmering jazz elements.

Delano Smith returns to his Mixmode imprint with a two-tracker this June, coming in the shape of ‘They’re Here / Safe Place’.
Detroit’s Delano Smith has long been one of the most respected figures in raw, understated house and techno both of his home turf of Detroit and further afield across the globe, racking up releases for revered imprints such as Sushitech, Third Ear, Kolour Recordings’ Undertones and of course his own Mixmode Recordings where he returns to here for the labels thirteenth installment.
Leading on the package is ‘They’re Coming’, which embraces Delano’s signature groove-driven feel via slick, snaking stab sequences, rumbling sub bass tones and an infectious organic drum groove to keep things smoothly flowing throughout.
‘Safe Place’ follows on the flip-side, edging things into deeper territories via ethereal pad swells, a heavily swung percussive shuffle and bumpy bass hits whilst resonant bell chime like synth tones ebb and flow throughout the hypnotic groove.

The label boss's return to his own Mixmode sees him explore earthy house rather than the streamlined beaters that made Odyssey such a smash. In short, Precipice (MM11) is three hypnotic tracks of organic Motor City textures and rhythms. Mariana's Song builds with the strong fluid motion omnipresent in all Smith's productions. Mechanical drums drive a rugged analogue bass line, while flowing pads are layered to create a bright soundscape. The track is one to captivate the floor, building effortlessly to lock it into step. Set over a tight locomotive groove, Delano's talent for twisting up vocal samples creates a smokey, atmosphere on Celebration. Toughening the drums and easing in the bottom end, choice drum fills heighten the impact of the beautifully swung drums. The dusty beats on Dream Come True bounce with a wide eyed rawness. At once fragile and assertive, the soft chords are reclined above a gently insistent bass line to give the floor or the home stereo a comfortable ride. Able to focus the output of his own label on the kind of tracks that first saw him emerge, Delano has built a bridge to introduce new ears to the sound of his city. Fans of Delano's earlier work are in for a treat here but new followers will be sucked into hypnotic and considered world of his productions.

Sushitech is back with another of its sublime vinyl-only projects and this one focuses on the work of Dexter. There will be three 12"s in all that draw together some of the producer's finest moments. He is a truly cult figure amongst those who know and he served up a fresh take on tech, acid, dub and house between 1997 and 2004 when these tracks were first made - if you can find any of those original records prepare to pay loads for them, or else dive into Past Moves I. It has a brace of slick, tightly programmed cuts underpinned by rolling pads with lovely lo-fi pads up top. Heady stuff.

The UK underground mainstay has been behind many cult and much sought-after records over the years and they all fuse obscure dub and acid tech house in smart ways. They were recorded between 1997-2004 and if you can find any OGs then you will be paying upwards of 100 quid for them. This slab has three driving but deep sounds carefully detailed with wispy pads and filtered vocals for perfect backroom deployment.

It is another essential 12' that packs in plenty of heat from the long-time UK favourite. On this one, you will find a pair of weighty, warm, and dubbed out tech cuts with bounce in the drums and Detroit soul in the pads. Timeless stuff.

Soft Traffic is an alias for a well-known digi-dub producer who recently turned heads with an outing on Made Mecum. Now they land on the mighty Sushitech with a super limited, hand-stamped 12" featuring Prince Morella. It opens up with the silky smooth 'Meltem I', a liquid dub techno roller with chords rippling out to an infinite horizon as vocal muttering up top heighten the immersive trip. Part II is more icy and underwater, with rhythmic synth undulations and smooth-as-silk drum rotations locking you into a meditative state. Last of all is part III, an ambient sounds scape with subtly suggestive rhythms as you float in an underwater cavern. Classy stuff.

After having two of his earlier tunes remodelled by Carl Craig and Mike Huckaby thanks to Sushitech, Detroit's Delano Smith re-emerges on the label with a double pack of tunes made with Brawther under the D&B Productions. That moniker has more to do with the pair's name rather than a suddenly conversion to drum & bass, although there's a love of dubby effects and deep bass power here that - at a stretch - could be said to be in common. The six tracks - Symbiosis' 1-6 - are smooth and simple, but executed with an ear (or four) for an irresistible groove, an economic but rhythmic keyboard stab and a knack for squeezing something nicely soulful from the barest ingredients. Nice work indeed.

Originally released three years ago, this is the collectors reissue as part of Sushitech's 15th anniversary celebrations. Invisibility is the second album of Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia's Sideways Invisibility Theory Project (AKA SIT). This pack containing all the tracks from their album, both chapters one and two, pressed on a limited coloured vinyl. It features a quintet of trippy, low-slung late night workout seemingly designed to operate in the cracks between house and minimal techno. There is a natural subtle variations throughout - a nod to dub techno here, a psychedelic acid line or dreamy deep house texture there - but thought, their focus remains firmly on only early morning workouts - modern classic!
