El Choop makes a welcome return to Echocord this March with the ‘Closing Motif’ EP, Deadbeat and Luke Hess step in on remix duties.

Harvey Jones, better known to most as El Choop, is a London based producer and DJ most notably known his Dub leaning House and Techno output for the likes of Greyscale, Ornate Music, Ranges, Etui Records and of course Echocord where he returns here following the 2021 ‘Insane Sends’ EP.

Leading the way on this new project is the original mix of ‘Faith’, a six-minute journey through cascading dub stabs, fluttering low-end pulsations, dynamically evolving percussion and intricate nuance throughout. Deadbeat’s ‘In The Chapel Dub’ mix of ‘Faith’ follows next, stripping things back to a swaying, heavily dubbed out feel via heavy sub bass swells, a bouncy rhythmic drive and echoing elements of the original composition. Title-cut ‘Closing Motif’ is up next on the b-side, employing a murky, plucked bass melody which ebbs and flows around hazy atmospherics, rattling hi-hats and muted drums. Luke Hess then steps in on remix duties for ‘Closing Motif’ to round things out, the Detroit native delivers a typically classy interpretation, taking the core of the original and twisting it into an IDM tinged cut via crunchy broken drums and shimmering synth textures. Echocord returns this March with a new EP from El Choop, backed by a remix from Sven Weisemann. Harvey Bones, better known to most as El Choop is a London based producer and DJ delivering dub leaning house and techno via the likes of Etui Records, Greyscale and now Echocord, a perfect home for his subtly nuanced, intricately unfolding aesthetic. Leading is title-track ‘Insane Sends’, employing a sturdy kick, cavernous percussion and choppy stab sequences, as the name would suggest all dynamically modulating across the composition’s six-minute duration. ‘Some Fall Harder Than Others’ then follows, embracing a more stripped back feel atmospherically, bringing filtered dub chords, ethereal pad textures and rounded subs into focus while dusty drums carry the hypnotic groove. Label regular Sven Weisemann then rounds out the release with his ‘Angelis Sends Mix’ of ‘Insane Sends’, a twelve-minute interpretation embracing a cinematic feel via expansive synth atmospherics, spiralling dub echoes and metallic chimes, all ebbing and flowing amongst one another throughout while a bumpy drum groove keep things moving. Ornate Music has been serving up quality deepness since 2008 but it's been a while since we heard from them. Edinburgh based producer, Rai Scott, returns to Ornate Music, previously releasing on the imprint back in 2014. This long overdue followup to her Innershift EP brings ethereal atmospherics and hypnotising percussion. The opener is a dreamy and celestial vibe with gently rolling beats, while Version 2 is more defined by the smeared chords which spiral to the heavens. 'As Honest As She Lived' is another electric lullaby with well-crafted ambient pads and 'Nina' ends with layers of bells, glistening keys and shimmering melody that soothes the soul.

Breezy, easy vibes smoulder through every inch of this brand new 12 from label regulars Jonno & Tommo. Over the past ten years the pair have worked their magic through all strands of the house spectrum on labels such as Trelik, Finale Sessions, Verdant as well as Ornate, but on here, chief cut Biosflash places them squarely back in the domain of laidback, deep house. This is a perfect summer roller, and can't fail to put a smile on your face, as you roll your windows down. Stratocaster keeps the sunshine vibe high, yet mines a little deeper, channelling the sounds of classic late-90s deep house labels such as as Seasons, Straight Up and Rotax.

It's out of the shadows and into the light with the next release on Ornate music. At the reins is OCH, a name you might not have heard in a while, but whose solid and reliable CV names Sect, All Inn, Baby Ford's Trelik and PalL SL among his label references. In all honesty, it's like he never went away. We get three cuts of precision deepness. Lean, rather than minimal, these are fat-free, perfectly balanced excursions into the ethereal edges of house. Tight claps, subtle, eerie vocal samples that drift in and out of the mix, the mood is uplifting without any need for euphoric histrionics. This is refined music that won't sound out of place on the floor at CDV or Sunwaves, whenever we can return to the dancefloor. From low-blowing electro drums to shimmering pads, rugged, snaking house grooves to hypnotic, metallic chords, on this record Gauss have carved out a cohesive sound world that channels the spirit of classic dub techno.
