Releasing his four track Piano Reeves EP on May 19, Powel returns to All Day I Dream to release his first record with the label since his The Beauty of a Polaroid album in 2020. A pianist since youth, Powel's extensive experiences from a lifetime of performing with bands and orchestras has imbued his music with depth and complexity. Finding inspiration in the people and places he encounters on his travels, Powel draws from a vast and nuanced musical palette. Powel aka Paul Christie is a Berlin based DJ/Producer, and a relatively fresh name on the underground house circuit. Christie has previously released material with some exciting new labels, namely, Berlin-based label Keller, Wunderbar Recordings and Deliciuse, here he joins the FINA roster, well and truly putting him on the map, and slotting in alongside Move D, Cottam and Leif. Title track ‘Cloud City’ opens the single here, an ethereal deep house number featuring an amalgamation of cosseting synth tones, understated, organic drums and intricate, blooming melodies.This is a stunning opener for the EP and a clear-cut sign that Powel has a deep-seated knowledge for sculpting heartfelt house music. Up next is ‘Falling In A Black Hole’, which sees Powel take a more reserved approach and minimal sentiment, opting for sparse drums, emotive chord progressions and smooth pad lines. On the B-Side of the release, first up we have ‘I’m Talking Quietly’, Powel drops the tempo down to create a chuggy, disco inflected feel. Throwing in loose, organic percussion for an authentic nu-disco feel, while piano chords, heavily delayed strings and sax licks further fuel the musicality, adding a further charm and character to the record. Then up last to close things is ‘Getting Out’, embracing a similar slo-mo, low-slung aesthetic to the preceding track, yet introducing a gritty electronic bass hook and analogue style synth lines this time to create a brilliantly contrasting track, and rounding off a stellar package full of understated, intelligent electronic music. Double Touch return to All Day I Dream label to release their four track EP, Storm. The duo is joined by Reigan, who contributes vocals for two tracks on the EP . The EP kicks off with its title track, which features vocals from Reigan about power, control, and the bliss of surrender. Reigan and Double Touch are frequent collaborators; Reigan has contributed vocals for past Double Touch EPs released on All Day I Dream, TRYBESOF, and Magician on Duty. Complex layers of percussion commence the record. Over the course of the introduction, melodic elements are slowly incorporated, crescendoing as Reigan begins to sing the first verse. The track breaks down around the midway point - as the percussion fades away, Reigan’s voice is highlighted, and tension builds. After the next chorus, the drums are reincorporated, as latent energy is released. Regarding her lyrics, Reigan said: “The feeling of surrender comes during the melodic change in the chorus. I say “take hold of me” twice and then when I say “and you take all of me” the lift in the note feels euphoric. This is the surrender to power. ‘Storm’ is a dance of power and passion, pleasure and control. It’s leaning into the bliss of surrender while exploring the indirect holders of power in doing so.” More
