Emerging from the dark recesses of the Chicago and London underground, in 2000 Omni a.m. relocated to New York. This EP marked their first release in their new surroundings, it's an intense and highly sought after 4 tracker that showcases the duo's continuing originality and guile. First up 'Smurfette's Big Night Out' is imaginative in it's approach, there's punchy beats and cascading percussion that drive the track along and really deliver the funk. Psychedelic acid touches interweave with haunting pads and a super deep b-line creates a chemistry like no other. Next is 'Buckshot' a more stripped back rolling affair. Undulating synths and swathes of infectious bass build the track throughout, whilst spacious analog delays and dub influenced sonic tricks abound. Over to the flip where 'I On U' is a wonderful floor friendly roller coaster of a ride, intro'd by a super phat kick, there's stuttering snares that jack and swing, whilst warm synths bubble and filter. Lastly 'Sick Sense' sets the controls for deep space, the bold throbbing bass makes it proper heads down groovin' affair, and the expertly programmed spoken word vocals interplay to add intrigue and atmosphere. New York Sessions is a cherished release from the Omni a.m. catalogue, a classic where all 4 tracks ooze class and character. This EP perfectly encapsulates the US duo's vision to challenge the conventions and boundaries of what defined house music throughout the late 90's. First up, 'Tubes for Allah', is characterised by heavy driving bass and sub-aquatic sonics. Punchy kicks drums drive the track forward, whilst swinging snares create a skeletal jack that underlies the track's eerie synths and haunting vocals. Berlin favourite 'Chill New Body' is up next. Out of print for over 20 years this track is slightly more restrained, the dub bass-line interplays with a hypnotising and unforgettable organ riff, until deftly programmed chords send the track off on a remarkable late night mission, with no less energy and atmosphere than its predecessor. On the flip, 'Beat Dis', is one of Adam & Marky's most highly revered and well-known productions in all it's full glory. Opening with a wailing guitar, this broken, breakbeat Tech-House masterclass, builds with an incessant acidic bass, there's additional percussive effects and a repetitive vocal to keep the track moving but it's those sparse beats and bottom end that are the hook, a perfect example of how 'less is more' can be so effective. This track became such a firm favourite with Craig Richards & Lee Burridge that they included it on the 2nd instalment of their Tyrant compilations. American tech-house pioneers Omni AM and techno don Casey Hogan gave birth to Bunker Scraper in a clandestine recording session in a NYC basement studio deep underground. These now-infamous studio sessions were fueled by keg stands, mountains of pre-legal weed, and intensive striped bass fishing expeditions in the world-renowned Long Island Sound (not a micro-genre). Facilitated by legendary DJ/Producer Alexi Delano and NYC label/Record Store Sonic Groove, this highly anticipated collaboration was originally released in 1997 to much dancefloor and critical acclaim, and grew to legendary status in the following years. Bunker Scraper (Omni A.M. Mix) opens proceedings, tight, infectious percussion underpins a deep rich b-line, while eerie synths interplay over the top, it's no wonder this track has become a staple in the sets of Villalobos and Raresh over the decades. Next up, 'In My Time of Flying' was a staple of Omni AM’s early post-Key live performances, swinging percussion, heavy bass and an addictive chanted vocal reflects the duo’s departure from ambient techno and shift towards more dj-friendly four-on-floor grooves. Written in Chicago (1996 or 97), it was performed and recorded live, straight to DAT, outdoors in the forests of Northern Michigan – all in one take, no edits, no overdubs. This bold production style was typical of Omni AM who began life as a live PA. Over on the flip Casey Hogan's mix of Bunker Scraper picks up the pace with rolling bass shaking percussion, whilst retaining many of the original's parts and character. Lastly this gem of an ep has been further enhanced by the inclusion of additional, never released before versions, most notably 'In My Time of Flying' (Live at Sassy...ss 1998), another special live jam, recorded at an unforgettable Winter rave that takes the track into whole new otherworldly dimension. These super rare live tracks give an insight into Omni AM's unique performance and recording process in the early days, and all have been remastered with love by Lawrie at Curve Pusher. More

On the A side we have the much in-demand Blaze 'Shelter' remix of "Fantasy" which stretches this classic to 8.55 and finishes with an unbelievable Phillip Bailey acappella. Terry Francis' name is synonymous with London's mid 90's to early noughties underground Tech-House heyday. A longtime underground DJ and tastemaker who has graced the booth in every major club you'd care to mention, Francis was also a prodigious producer and label owner who found himself working alongside the infamous SWAG mob and heading up the now seminal labels 'Wiggle' and 'Eye 4 Sound' labels. With a fervent international DJ schedule and numerous productions appearing all over the place, a residency at Fabric, major label remixes piling up and everything else in-between, Francis' name has been solidified as a bonafide UK legend, a force to be reckoned with. Let's rewind to 1999, Surreal Records, a subsidiary of SWAG, 'Took From Me' drops and is an instant classic.... even now, a decade later, it's a record that peels the roof off a night-club (in the right hands, of course!) It's all here inside 'Took From Me', the sparse, chopped up drum programming, ominous floor-shaking basslines and weirdly warped vocal samples that make you wonder. B-side see's the equally sparse yet compelling 'Clint's Groove' spreading out over one whole side of wax, it's all filtered rolling drums, aquatic sirens and a monstrous bassline that could easily swallow London town whole! Somehow Klasse Wrecks has made it to 50 official releases, not bad for a label that wears its ignorance for others and 'the norm' proudly on its dirty sleeve. Over the years the label has released a multitude of various sounds, spanning bleep, rave, deep house, down tempo and the 50th release does well to encapsulate that free spirit and openess. Without much planning and totally by way of coincidence the responsibility lies with label co-owner Luca Lozano and its sonically a typical mixed bag as to be expected. Kicking off with restless acid stomping, the title track barges through the door...knocks over a few drinks before blossoming into a breakdown that propels the 303 deep into space and back again. On the A2, Lozano shows off his love for creaky breakbeats and DX donks on a track called 'Re-Mix'...which as far as we know isnt a remix of anything at all. The flip contains more raving beauties, 'Save Me From The Rave' might be a desperate plea but by the sounds of it he's still enjoying the madness, the producer makes an epic breakdown that might well signify the end of all Trance homages. Then the final track of the EP sounds like it could be played in a field in Glastonbury in 1993, its haunting vocal harmonies signify the sun is coming up soon and likely that we're about to start Chapter 2 of the Wrecks Wrebellion. The special edition sleeve artwork features examples of previous artwork from the last 50 records, overlaid in a typically chaotic manner by the label's designer, PLANETLUKE.COM. More
