Reverie, ‘Light of the World’ and ‘Around the Corner’ all speak of Miller’s multi-faceted approach, with each track bringing something slightly different to the table. Reverie’ feeds into the rhythm of the dancefloor, with a pulsating chord that underpins the rhythm and provides a beautiful link between the glorious melodic meanderings that come forth. ‘Light of the World’ is involving and evolving, like waves lapping at the beach, characterised by the gentle key stabs and sparkling top layer elements that give it a real gleam. ‘Around the Corner’ features a similar top quality rhythm layer, with this one a bit more playful, providing an up and down motion to proceedings that is sure to get the feet moving. Love Above Records is proud to present its latest offering with this brand new EP - Silent Tonality by legendary Detroit DJ and producer, Alton Miller.

The project started from a friendship forged between the speakers of 24 Moons, where Alton played at one of our Wildlife x Love Above parties in 2022. Special shout out to our friend DJ Jnett for connecting us all together.

The Detroit Music Institute founder has graced us with a 5-track EP of sophisticated house music that boasts a myriad of modern house sounds. Deep rhythmic passages, soulful vocals and organic textures all in Alton’s usual signature style.

With a career spanning several decades, Alton Miller has earned a reputation as a pioneer and innovator in the Detroit house music scene. His unique blend of soulful, deep, and melodic house beats has been a driving force in shaping the sound of the Motor City's electronic music culture. Miller's contributions to the global electronic music community have made him a revered figure, and his timeless productions continue to captivate audiences, solidifying his status as a legendary figure in the world of house music.

Alton’s early roots in soul & funk music led to an affinity for clubbing and house music. Born in Chicago but raised in Detroit, Alton grew up with the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Santana, Parliament Funkadelic and the Philly Sound, always playing in the background. Miller began developing his deejaying skills under the electrifying energy of house music founding fathers like Larry Levan and Timmy Regisford, where he regularly attended infamous parties such as Ron Hardy’s Music Box and Frankie Knuckles’s private loft party in Chicago.

A few years later, Alton along with his like-minded friends, Chez Damier and George Baker, founded the legendary dance club 'The Music Institute' in Detroit in 1988. Since then, Alton has cemented himself in underground house music with numerous releases on some of the most notable independent labels in the industry, including Defected, Planet E, King Street, Nitegrooves, Guidance Recordings, Trackmode Records, Seasons and Octave Lab. More

Chicago born & Detroit bred ALTON MILLER is a vessel of musical vibrations. Since his first release as a remixer on KEVIN SAUNDERSON'S 1987 "KEYNOTES," ALTON'S creative journey has remained consistent. The four tracks on this EP all feature low slung basslines, dirty synths & deep rhythms. More

He has a richly musical sound and roots that go back decades, and it shows: 'Clone' is the sort of stylish backroom house that layers diffuse chords with dusty drums and cannot fail to warm the heart. 'All Of It' explores more broken and Afro-tinged drum patterns with golden Rhodes chords and astral leads. This top trio is completed with the funky kick patterns and perfect soulful vocals of 'Waitin 4 You'. Detroit mainstay Kevin Reynolds remixes it into a hypnotic Motor City roller. More

The result is some extremely classy, luxurious sounding deep house music with a touch of the lounge about it. Smoothly combining his tendencies towards emotional and soulful deep house whilst building these elements on a steady foundation of tribal, percussive and dance rhythms, Miller manages to effortlessly pull you into his house sound with an impressive palette of ideas even if it's just one 4 track EP.
A1 - All We Have is a dancefloor inspired jam, but don't get fooled. The track is infused with a ot of deep juice and it drips irresistibly through the synths, short but smooth bassline and percussive foreplay of different drum elements. Playful yet with enough momentum to wiggle you in a positive dance sway.
A2 - Shine On Me (Rollin To Detroit Mix), the track which was initially released for Moodyman's KDJ Records back in 2002, got "revised" by Ricardo Miranda shows off perfectly the emotional substance of Miller's deep vocal house interpretation with silky percussive lines in between.
B1 - Headspace is the pure example of a perfect B-side cut. Slow-burning rhythm filled with organic perc stabs and dense but deep bassline, Miller again in a genius way intertwines slow emotional story backed by almost raw harmonics but nevertheless well explained Detroit vibe.
B2 - After The Rain, which can be heard on Alton's "Souls Like Mine" album released on the forementioned The Music Institute as a bonus cut. It's a slow dance between reemerging basslinand subtle synth lines flowing on offset claps and smooth background bongos. pretty timeless stuff if the atmosphere is dimmed right.
