Ali Berger - Pattern Buffers Depolarizing
Freshly relocated to Pittsburgh by way of Detroit, Ali Berger is a prolific bastion of no-frills acid and house bombs. He takes a break from dropping dancefloor experiments on his Trackland Acid Dealerships label to join Spectral in releasing five of his most polished and modernized tracks to date. All of Sump Pump was produced within a month and utilized the same few instruments—making for a robust, hard-banging sound palette that orbits around the Pittsburgh Modular Synthesizer Box module and a single kick drum run through an Akai S1100. "Sump Pump" and "Dreaming of a World" deliver the kind of jacking, hypnotic acid that never goes out of style, while "Voices" and "Microbial Corrosion" bring in some infectious machine funk with a side of psychedelia. Sump Pump ends with "Pattern Buffers Depolarizing," a spacey broken beat jam that touches on Berger's experimental side. It makes for a vibrant five-tracker that's remarkably both distinct and cohesive.

Ali Berger - Mint Leaf
Ali Berger has been churning out top-tier, thoughtful house music with plenty of soul and bounce for some time now. Whether he’s releasing via his own label Trackland, or dropping 12”s on labels like Spectral Sound, Clave House, Firm Tracks, and FCR, or DJing either solo or collaboratively with Davis Galvin as Hits Only, Ali’s signature feel is always palpable…there’s a genuine spirit to it all.
This 12” is four bumpers that balance sunshine and introspective, heady, thumpin’ house. A1 “Sun Rising On Harmony” has an ear-worm bass line hook driving the tune with an infectious melody on top riding shotgun. A2 “Inside” brings some acidic tendencies to a back-to-basics house sound we’re always in the mood for. Flip to the B-side and “Thoughts Like Light Snow” give us an electro reprise. B2 “Mint Leaf” brings us home with a swelling bass line and snares that dew-drop over the 4/4 with luscious pads and brain-itch scratching zoinks playing at your ear in the background. House music that’s like fine chocolate. Unpack and indulge! More

New Jersey-born Ali Berger is a drum machine specialist and low-key US electronic music standby, now based in Pittsburgh after spending the 2010s in Boston and Detroit. His catalog of original music runs deep, with over 60 releases on his Trackland label and EPs on imprints like Spectral Sound and Sequencias, all resulting from a lovingly-cultivated studio approach which respects improvisation as a spiritual practice.
Here with this sublime release on Scissors and Thread, Ali shares a multitude of sounds and atmospheres across the five tracks. As Ali himself puts it "This record collects tracks from the last three years, plus 0221 (Serious Mix) which is from 2018. There's a full cross-section of production techniques represented here, from one-take jams to multi-tracked compositions, but through it all there's a deep melancholy which (I hope) is tempered by enough groove to be uplifting. Maintaining emotional balance takes constant, caring attention; music is a part of that process for me and these tracks reflect that."
This balancing of melancholic atmospheres and groove is evident throughout - Rhythm & Simplicity is a low key thoughtful banger for the more discerning dancefloors, while A New World To Forget also exhibits a deep love of cultured house music and analog drum machines. Tape Jam Pt 2 is the perfect mix of improvisation and pure groove, put down in a rough and gritty fashion. 0221 (Serious Mix) merges a breakbeat with pads and synths that give off a balearic sunrise vibe, while Motion Anthem wraps up the EP with a tougher groove coupled with wistful melodies and oceans of feeling.

Ali Berger drops a gorgeous three track ep with the right amount of bump in its tracks. Lovely tracks with a fine drive in it, somehow reminding of the early releases on Patrice Scott's Sistrum label. Adventurous, Fresh and energetic.

Detroit’s Ali Berger returns to FatCat Records’ sub-label FCR with a follow up release entitled ‘Keys The Door EP2’.
After his ‘Keys The Door EP1’ that picked up support from the likes of Ben UFO, Artwork, Huerco S and Machine Woman, Michigan’s Ali Berger returns to the FatCat Records off-shoot FCR which features releases from Cottam, DJJ and Project 223. Ali’s previous releases on Clave House, Firm Tracks and Isaiah Tapes reflect his keen ear for slick, stripped back house productions that’s gained the attention worldwide resulting in him being signed to FatCat and regularly featuring in clubs all over the US.
‘Grease Trap’ kicks things off with a wavering acid line, robust melodies and outlandish oscillations before ‘Heard’ drops low-slung bass grooves, emotive leads and rhythmic tombs reminiscent of early Larry Heard productions. ‘Hit Piece’ introduces eccentric synth shoots, bubbling percussion and glistening rhythms until ‘Keys The Door’ rounds things off with a cheerful house cut fusing dreamy piano chords and a stimulating drum sequence.

Detroit’s Ali Berger joins up with FatCat Records’ sub-label FCR to release four acid-tinged cuts entitled ‘Keys The Door EP1’.
Michigan’s Ali Berger has been making music for nearly ten years now and was first introduced to house and techno in 2012 through a party at New York’s Dope Jams. Later that year he went on to release his debut EP on Militant Science and has since gone on release music via Clave House, Isaiah Tapes and Firm Tracks. Ali represents a new wave of producers coming through the US scene earning him regular slots at venues across the country. His ‘Keys The Door EP1’ sees him join Brighton’s FatCat sub-label FCR which launched with two releases from Cottam, in addition to records from DJJ and Project 223.
Ali uses mostly hardware from the 90s and early 2000s to make his music and the stripped back nature of production is a constant feature throughout the EP. ‘Badlands’ opens things up with a chugged out groove immersed with weaving 303s and eccentric modulations before rhythmic synth stabs, angelic leads and delicate chords take the focus in ‘Love In This Box’.
‘Secrets’ maintains the attractive atmosphere through a lusciously deep bassline, a haunting acid line and inviting oscillations until ‘Sleeves’ finishes things off with a raw drum sequence, illustrious melodies and alleviating pads in the second half.

Producer Mark E hails from the West Midlands, an area of the UK that was at the heart of the industrial revolution and was also hit hardest by the decline of UK industry in the 1970s, and again by the economic crisis of our own time. It's an area with a distinct sound and atmosphere, one that manifests in the music of artists as diverse as Black Sabbath and The Specials, and one that plays into many of the ideas behind Mark E's 2014 full-length, Product Of Industry. Following that release, Mark E presents a late-year surprise with AVION EP. Featuring two new tracks from the producer plus remixes on two Product Of Industry highlights: "Bog Dance" and "Being Hiding". First up, White Material affiliate Alvin Aronson brings his minimal ambient productions to "Bog Dance" while the collaborate duo of Leon Vynehall and Christian Piers aka Laszlo Dancehall fire things up on "Being Hiding" to close out the EP.

matrixxman - The Caravan
For his debut on Spectral Sound, San Francisco DJ/producer Matrixxman returns with a strong and versatile four ?track EP. Amulet is rich with analog ideas, and explores his interests in deep Chicago moods juxtaposed with techno futurism. Having previously made a name for himself in 2013 with the well received, underground hit The XX Files, his drum machine-laden rhythm tracks, and melodic experiments have enchanted the hearts of elite dance music tastemakers left and right. Using a number of classic Roland pieces for this release, Duff fluctuates between bouncing house rhythms and hypnotic techno. Most notably of the latter style is "The Caravan," with hefty, driving syncopation under scrubbing, distorted hints of melody that fit in perfectly alongside Audion and Spectral itself. "Venetian Mask" goes deeper with a hint of restrained jacking, calling up summer Sundays and setting up for "Enter Me," an infectious balearic excursion that will stick in your head for days and shows off Duff's ease with composition. Finishing off the Amulet EP is "Scimitar," which leans closer to a UK style of dubbed out bass coupled with an estranged yet futuristic touch of deep house.
