Aroop Roy’s star is deservedly in the ascendancy! As one of London’s most exciting selectors, he’s managed to position himself in the sweet spot of being the DJ’s DJ and causing wild scenes wherever he plays, with headline grabbing sets at Defected Croatia, We Out Here, Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide and many more. As a producer, musician and label owner, he continues to excel, armed with a vast knowledge of outernational sounds, from rare African disco, jazz, funk, to house, UKG and seemingly everything in-between. His open-minded approach has led to brilliant releases and remixes for labels as diverse as Soundway, Heavenly Sweetness, Permanent Vacation, Club Bad, Delusions of Grandeur, Atjazz Recordings and his own Vive La Musique imprint. Having played a few gigs together, it was only a matter of time before Jimpster convinced Aroop to get an EP together for Freerange and the resulting Re Bulele EP couldn’t be any more satisfying! Leading the charge, 'Mama Mwana' captivates with entrancing thumb piano loops and a traditional African vocal all propped up by a subtle yet chunky house beat to lock the dancers in. 'Re Bulele' features the hypnotic vocals of Botswana native Fox Meropa. Aroop masterfully combines a deep, techy Afro House groove with glassy synth pads to form a stripped back instrumental with the vocals front and centre. Seemingly disparate elements shine on this wonderful alternative to the deluge of maximal Afro House tracks being released these days. Moroccan producer FNX Omar delivers the goods with a sublime remix of Re Bulele. Creating tension with layers of looping vocals along with a rolling, percussive groove. Aroop Roy has been making waves with his unique sounds for the past few years, with a wealth of successful releases and a busy gig schedule at the helm of some of the best clubs around the world. By fusing elements of Jazz, Afro, Latin, Funk and Soul with the deeper end of House and Disco, Aroop has forged his own style with EPs on revered labels including G.A.M.M, Basic Fingers, Freestyle and Lazy Days. For his Delusions Of Grandeur debut he pulled out all the stops, delivering three original tracks which further show his diversity as an artist and ability to produce left of centre, quality underground music without losing sight of the dancefloor. Things kick off with Save Our Love, a track that’s absolutely brimming with energy thanks to punchy Wurlitzer chops, tension-building Philly strings, and a rock-solid disco groove. The label is back just in time for summer with three more doses of peak time fire from Aroop Roy, who has gained a fine reputation for the quality and widespread appeal of his releases. ‘You Say' is a funk-fuelled number with gritty retro vocals and guitar, driven by a warm disco groove and 80s arp-synth. The feel-good vibes gradually build into an anthemic floor-filling climax. ‘Taj Mahal' reworks a Brazilian classic into a full on house workout, reminiscent of Roy's popular series on Gamm. ‘Mapora' is an original number that will blend well into both deep house and afro-centric sets. Following a strong 2020 in which the label released acclaimed EPs from Piers Kirwan, Cyclonix, Lay-Far and a collective of rising stars based in the Italian city of Bologna, we have decided to kick-start 2021 with a first label outing from Terry Tester.

This Danish producer, is no newcomer, having first come to the attention of distinguished listeners as part of production duo The Works at the tail end of the 2010s. Since then, he’s delivered a handful of admired EPs for Mixed Ape Music, Copenhagen Underground Posse and, most recently, Creak Inc.

Given his quietly impressive track record, it’s no surprise that he has delivered the goods on his Boogie Café debut. The EP’s four original tracks bristle with hazy melodiousness, combining dusty musical motifs and deliciously deep sounds, with tried-and-tested dancefloor grooves.

He sets the tone with ‘Dubby’, an ultra-deep and hypnotic late-night excursion in which echoing, soulful vocal snippets and rich riffs rise above a raw, analogue bassline and fizzing drums, before offering an even more atmospheric outing in the shape of the bass-heavy broken beat/deep house fusion of ‘Breeze Unlimited’, where jazzy piano solos and spacey chords catch the ear.

Terry's love of grimy old drum machines and weighty analogue basslines is explored further on ‘Nite Mood’, a locked-in number that remains deep and alluring thanks to some spell-binding chords and yearning musical flourishes, while the bustling and busy ‘Hangover Jam’ boasts some brilliant percussion programming, whistling synthesizer melodies and one of his most impactful basslines to date. To round off the EP, Boogie Café label partner Chezz delivers a sublime interpretation of ‘Hangover Jam’, successfully re-imagining the track as a deep, melodious, jazz-funk flavoured broken beat jam. On the B side, Danvers is back at the helm with ‘Can’t Let Him Know’ an afro tinged, bruked up jam, heavy on the live bass, syncopated synths & vocal litanies. Last up, ‘Someone To Count On’ is a crunchy, late night, soiree coupling a monstrous bass synth, crushed up drum hits and sleazed out pads.
Heaters a plenty on this one, taking Danvers one step closer to world Danvination.
