B1 Get On Down takes the listener to the middle of the dancefloor, mid-set at a Techno-leaning after hours. Think Christian AB in a mischievous mood… Obscure, industrial, fizzing drums start the show, followed by a stomping yet playful bass line, hip hop vocals urging you to get busy on the floor swirl around you, before a piercing arpeggio sends the listener to the cosmos, as the track peaks. B2 Deep Sea couldn’t have a more appropriate name if it tried. A chugging, melancholy, submarine journey to the bottom of the Atlantic, presented at a lower BPM, making it equally perfect for the very beginning or very end of a set. Incoming… Bass Culture delivers a fresh new EP featuring three classic cuts remastered for 2015. Selected by label head D’Julz, Bass Culture’s 44th release comes from British producer Mark Ambrose, owner of cult outlet Crayon. Mark has been DJing since 1989 and decided to inject his passion for music into production during the late 90s, setting up Crayon in 1997. As a fan of Mark and his label, D’Julz decided that Bass Culture would be the perfect place to re-release a few of his timeless tracks, so here we have the Groove X EP…Though it was released 16 years ago in 1998 the title track hasn’t aged a bit, powering along with a rough groove counterposed with enchanting atmospherics. On the flip ‘Electricity’ (featuring David Holness) has a more celestial air with squelchy effects and jaunty vibe throughout, combined with David’s velvety vocals. ‘Ozone’ completes this trio of classics and ends things on a high with hypnotic bleeps cascading down from the high end, a large slice of bass and that ‘I can’t quite understand’ vocal samples to really set things off.

Mark's classic 'Shooting Stars' was originally released on the late great 'Offshoot' label in 1998 and became an underground hit, seeing support from a variety of DJ's including Derrick May, Cajmere and of course, Ben Sims. Fast forward 15 years and this uncompromising tough edged disco workout still gets dropped and is highly sought after on the second hand vinyl market, so we thought it was time for a respectful remix package. First up is a brand new firing makeover from the man himself that jacks in all the right places while staying true to original groove, then label head honcho Ben Sims who drops an intense Lil Louis inspired reworking. Uk hero Aubrey gets Dark on us with an intricate and menacing remix while newly formed Fokus Group (aka Paul Mac & Ben Sims) pull no punches with a relentless and harsh interpretation (Vinyl Only).

Slope114 are Dmitri SFC & Elise Gargalikis, a duo that makes their house music live from home in San Francisco. That lends it a rare musicality and melodic lushness that sit their work right up there with deep house forefathers. This outing starts with the slouchy goodness and endearing bass of 'Dystopian Blues', complete with aloof vocals that exude cool. The dub is even more pillow and smooth than the Mark Ambrose mix that brings a little more roughness to the drums but still locks into a hypnotic vibe. 'Emu 2' is a gentle rhythm with dusty pads and candle-lit chords for when slow-burn subtlety is prized over immediacy. Classy stuff.

An inspired link up between UK and continental producers - yeah, in your face, Brexiteers - as Brit talent and Crayon boss Mark Ambrose joins forces with Spain's Serious Cut, across four irresistible cuts. 'Remedy' nods its head subtly to the Diana Ross (and then Associates) classic 'Love Hangover' while enchanted, spacious and spacey grooves do their thing, while the cherry on top of 'Deep Track' proves to be some neat sci-fi spoken word, not to mention the kind of soft, jazzy chords that Global Communication's house productions used to revel in. Flip it over for the more electroid 'Talk Box' and the unashamedly Windy City-referencing 'Auto Level. Four sides of a classic sound, three great producers, two sides of top vinyl and one must buy bit of vinyl.

Mark Ambrose has always been a mainstay of his Crayon label and it's there he returns with more from his Skymaster project. He ups the tempo a little with hard, driving sounds for both cosy peak times and heady back rooms at the afters. 'Light Speed' shimmers with Detroit soul and rides on booming but soft-edged kicks, then a new Modern Mix of his classis 'Dream Mode' is nicely toned out and hypnotic with whimsical pads floating up high. Last but not least is 'Dessert Horizon', which is a little more menacing and dark to close out a stylish EP.

Freaky Chakra hails from San Francisco and is a local legend with a vast discography that has roots back in the early 90s and fetches mad prices on second-hand markets. This is a new one from him that shows off his take on tech, starting with 'Discotechno' which is a bubbly number with rubbery bass and aquatic synth globules. 'Foreign Element' is a heavy dubby stomper with a fat-ass groove and 'Space Jam' then takes off with more cosmic synth smears and delicate motifs drifting above a more muffled rhythm. 'Backflash' shuts down with a wonky back and forth and more late-night grit. A fresh sound from this venerated veteran.

Mark Ambrose has been locked into house since the 80s, mostly with a Chicago and Detroit perspective. His accomplished sounds come on his own Crayon label, which is where he returns now with another sophisticated electro outing. 'Reflections' opens on a deep tip with the sort of meaningful chords that demand you look inward as the ice-cold drums move things onwards next to a Mini Moog bassline. 'Star System' layers up shimmering chords again full of reflective energy over deft electro drums and 'Space Time' then cuts more loose on a deep house vibe with widescreen pads and a lighter mood filled with cosmic detail that suits late nights or sunrises alike.

Mysticisms’ Dubplate series reaches number 10 with the first in a series of specials, taking the genre blurring music of Persian and presenting updated remixes and versions by up-and-coming producers, as well as friends and family of the label.

Started as a sporadic offshoot of Mysticisms’ main releases, with the idea to highlight the wonderful sounds of dub influenced dance music, Dubplate has now become an integral part of the mission.

To start, South London’s Picasso joins the label, showcasing his declared abstract grooves and an EP of Dub and Tech House movers. While his productions aim for the dance floor, they are often characterized by complex rhythms and unconventional structures, prioritizing atmosphere and texture over traditional melodies.

Drawing inspiration from ambient, jazz, experimental influences and the heavy hand of dub, Sam “Andrews” McKay has crafted an EP of immersive “soundscapes”. Joining the legendary Persian (Peter Reilly) as co-selector, his retakes are all warped grooves, wide bass and dubby atmospherics.

Opening with Space Within Art, the street soul meets reggae rhythms are jettisoned, and a Dub House swing drives the track. The love, homage and vibration for Sound System culture remains, enchanting trippy reggae sampledelic vocals weaving in the brain.

Dunya 2 sees a shift, minds expanding. A jazz influenced breakbeat, harp, strings, building to a psychedelic swirl, driven by a dub bass in a clash, morph and glow.

The deep Digi Dub of D Dub Twist grows, warping the ‘JA riddim meets English hedonism’ in true Soundclash style. Touches of drone underlay, highlighting Sam’s experimental leaning, utilising Persian’s love of Eastern mystical samples to marry perfectly for a deep dub excursion.

The self-prescribed “odd-fellow” completes his versions, exploring his love of depth and abstract sound in closer, Jacob’s Dub. The warm roots vibrations in original form develop into a scatter gun House bumper. Dubwise, Lovers, Stepper, all merge around shuffling, trippy beats and skippy hats, Picasso’s groove is laid bare, driving the EP to finale.
