The newest 12" on Voodoo Down Records marks the debut appearance of longtime friend of the label Jordan Lieb a.k.a. Black Light Smoke. Jordan played an instrumental part in the NYC label Scissor & Thread, and has spent recent years honing his live set in front of crowds ranging from BPM, Robot Heart, and fabric.
The Depression Sleeping EP is a collection of tracks from his archives from the past decade that have been updated and remixed. The theme of the record is his struggle with sleep and insomnia. Per the artist: "Releasing these songs form my past reflects my effort to embrace myself, the good and the bad, and to channel my personal battles into a creative process."

SHORT INFO:
Black Light Smoke is the electronic music moniker of Jordan Lieb - producer, songwriter, and award winning film and TV composer. A Chicago native, Jordan transplanted to New York City in 2001, where his career as a multi-disciplined musician has taken flight in many forms.
Currently residing in upstate New York, Black Light Smoke returns to Scissor and Thread for his first full length debut-album: Ghosts.
The 12 tracks (plus three digital bonus tracks) span everything from 90s house, smooth and deep soulful beats, dusty grooves and thoughtful treaties on the state of creativity, capitalism and identity.
It’s a collection that sits together as a listening experience perfectly, building peaks and sliding into serene troughs, all with a strong sense of radical thought and creative experimentation. Tracks bend and warp in unexpected directions, while gritty, distortion and overdrive counterpoint classic rave stabs and vocal samples. Taken as a whole, the album could be the soundtrack to a night drive through the city, as much as certain tracks will no doubt find themselves woven into the sets of the more leftfield and genre pushing DJs. Either way, it’s an essential release from one of the most exciting and vital producers out there and the first artist signed to Scissor and Thread back in 2011.
The album title, Ghosts, tells two stories. One is personal - an artist embracing the shadows of his past in order to move forward and complete a body of work. The second story is a search for the original meaning of house music - not just the usual sample, appropriation or casual nod to the originators of house - but a meditation on the living story of Black America in which house music is an inseparable chapter. Both stories are a reflection on grief and the transformation of trauma into celebration.
100% of Jordan Lieb’s personal proceeds from this record will go to Little Bit Foundation, empowering students living in poverty to achieve their academic goals.

A2. Street Emotion
A3. Get Something
B1. The Right Way
B2. Hustle
B3. Golden Chains
Following on from 'City Life' (Scissor And Thread #40) here is a brand new extended EP from composer, producer and musician Black Light Smoke, jam-packed with pure raw House Music showcasing all the benefits of floating keys and rattling hi-hats, while masterfully interwoven vocal cuts take an infectious lead through the EP.
The title track 'Nothing Makes Me Feel (Good Anymore)' sets the tone with a snappy beat and a slightly melancholic vocal sample. 'Street Emotion' convinces with tasty dryness over a characteristic bass-wobble in the beginning before it opens up with a warm and swelling synth pad.
In similar fashion 'Get Something' is beat-focused and dressed up with G-House vocal splinters which make it groovy as hell. 'The Right Way' surfs on a wave of juicy chords and laid back vocals and especially the well-arranged break beat of 'The Right Way' creates the track's uniqueness.
'Hustle' has some serious jack-flavor, transporting all the best of Chicago's warehouse sound while 'Golden Chains' is driven by a sophisticated garage bass-line, almost contrary to the emotional feel of the track, once more underlined by a distinctive vocal line. Well saturated distortion and Lo-Fi edges add up to a wealth of comfortably warm moods that represent Black Light Smoke's very personal expression of modern House sound, which you will be also be able top experience in his upcoming live set gigs.

Black Light Smoke - Without You
Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmospheric house.
Tracklist 12":
A1. In Gold
A2. City Life
B1. Make My Peace
B2. Up In This
B3. Without You
Scissor and Thread regular Black Light Smoke returns to the Brooklyn label run by Francis Harris for a mini LP of raw, atmospheric house. The alias of Jordan Lieb, Emmy Award winning composer/producer/musician, Black Light Smoke drops City Life - six tracks of affecting, deep vibes.
'In Gold' is rich in analog warmth, a bubbling deep house roller that echoes some of the New York, Detroit and Chicago greats. Title track 'City Life' is a stripped down rhythm track, populated with stabs, melodic flourishes, and beautifully arranged pads - as well as a killer vocal. 'Make My Piece' is built around a vocal hook and roughneck drum track, before opening up with crunchy percussion and a sick bassline. Next one is 'Up In This', starting on a dreamy tip, but exploding into life with Lieb's signature feel for propulsive rhythms and deep, warm tones. 'Without You' is a tougher proposition, using heavy compression and distortion to texture the track, while the digital bonus track 'Every Beat (No Regrets)' is a fitting end to the release - a woozy, after-hours come down vibe, wrapping up this journey.

For some grungy vocal house music with a touch of Chicago percussion and a healthy splash of the indie-synth wave that came crashing over electronic music in the late 2000s, Scissor & Thread's Black Light Smoke might be 2014's answer to Danton Eeprom circa 2009. We say Danton Eeprom, as the voice on the B2, "Screws In My Head", has a similar tone and enunciation of the Frenchman, or are we getting mixed up with Mathew Dear? The title-track, "Firefly", brings back memories of Azari & III's debut EP only with druggy vocals coming from what could be the basement of a DFA rave in New York, while "Morning Comes" borrows some cowbells from The Rapture and sultry French inspirations from Jane Birken. "Black Bricks" then provides some slo-mo, lo-fi phase filtered house - and one hell of a bassline. Alternative electronics for the indie lover

Given the challenges of today’s music market, it’s a fairly bold statement for an indie label to come out of the box with not one, but two vinyl only releases by an artist with no profile to speak of, but here black light smoke proves worthy of the faith being placed in him. SAT001 Switchback/Black Stripe is all old school drum machines, tape-hiss, heavy footed disco kicks, acid-a-plenty and funk-to-spare, but the tracks transcend the rawness of their roots to achieve a modern, club-ready edge with retro flair. 11 Years Voodoo Down Records celebrates a decade-plus milestone of music from the
titular label, which was launched by three friends in Brooklyn in late 2012 and later split
across both sides of the Atlantic.
Their 17th vinyl release is their first double 12”, compiling tracks from a selection of the
artists that helped them hone their sound: STL, who featured on the first release on the
label; October, a recurring favorite who came out of a techno hiatus to cut demos for this
release; Tobias., who first appeared on the label in 2015; JXTPS, the recent roster addition
from Melbourne; MadderModes, the Manchester duo who debuted on the Empirical
Evidence EP; and as always, the label founders themselves: L’estasi Dell’oro, 12 x 12, and
N’conduit.
These tracks run the gamut of sounds that have been a staple of the label over the years:
upbeat drone techno from L’estasi Dell’oro leading off the release with “Get GOO ing”,
dusty dub techno courtesy of STL on “Dungeon CeLL”, head-trip hypnotic techno from
Tobias. on “Public Eye”, downtempo melodic from 12 x 12, punchy peak-time techno from
JXTPS and N’conduit, and a raw acid techno groover from October.
This release celebrates a decade plus of music on the label. It also marks the return of STL, Tobias., and
October to the label with all original material. October coming off a long hiatus, and will follow up with a
mini-album later on the label.
The first 2x12” compilation released on the label, and along with the release we will be adding the label’s
back catalog on major digital streaming platforms.
Touring by 12 x 12 and L’estasi Dell’oro planned in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia during the last
weeks of 2024, and in LA, NYC, Denver following later in the year. More

After racking up a handful of recent releases on Macro and Field Records, L'estasi Dell'oro
has returned from the woodshed to mark his debut solo EP on Voodoo Down Records, the
label he co-founded in Brooklyn nearly a decade ago.
Soaring guitars, twisted violins, dusty pianos, tolling bells, stretched drums, and
outward-bound synths are all features of the sonics presented here across the four songs on
this record. Additionally, the A1 feature song 'Proserpina' revisits the vocals of Crystal Boyd,
the singer featured on the L’estasi tracks from the early Voodoo Down compilations which
helped define his sound in the techno world. Along with the three original songs, his
Penalune alias strips the A1 tune to it's floating core elements for full atmospheric immersion.

The 13th Voodoo Down release is the sophomore EP by label co-founder Sean Phillips aka 12 x 12. The follow-up to 2014’s Kobayashi Maru, this four-track EP is the culmination of honed process and techniques over the past several years to produce a more organic groove-based style of techno. Mostly the work of a sampler and some analog synths, the tracks range from warm broken-beat atmospheres to digital sequences. More

Tracklist:
A1: Deadbeat - Rubby Poly Seqs and a Damn Good Kick A2: L'estasi Dell'oro - Repetition Repetition Repetition B1: N'conduit - Eye Dust B2: 12 x 12 - Future States
Infotext:
Voodoo Down returns to the compilation series that started it all:
Possible Side Effects Vol. 1, released in late 2012, was the first release on the Brooklyn-based label and marked the inception of a concept EP series that would come to define the label's sound. Featuring an A1 cut by German journeyman producer STL and rounded out by the label founders' eclectic techno styles, PSE Vol. I was the perfect vehicle for the producers still working to carve out their own individual aesthetic.
Now with a dozen releases under their belt, the founders L'estasi Dell'oro, N'conduit and 12 x 12 have returned to their roots and this time recruited the prolific Berlin-based producer Deadbeat for volume three of the series. Like the first two volumes, it's a slightly chaotic mix of beefy dance floor tools and heady experimentation. The separate personalities shine through more than ever on this release. VDR always striving to keep things interesting.

maddermodes - Buran Rising
Tracklisting:
A1: Corinthian Columns A2: Empirical Evidence B1: Bellatrix B2: Buran Rising
Infotext:
For their tenth release, Voodoo Down has again chosen to debut a new act to add to their label roster. Andy Harper and Nic Ford have been making music together for over a decade but began releasing in earnest under the name MadderModes in 2014 on their own label, Shift Coordinate Points. They have since put out records on the labels Millions of Moments and Night Drive Music. Their handful of releases have already drawn support from top names like Move D and Nick Höppner, and it's clear that the duo's sound is only getting more refined with each successive record.
The EP entitled "Emprical Evidence" is a wholly cinematic piece of work, spread across four tracks that unravel slowly, unified by a theme of pumping syncopated rhythms under sprawling pad and string progressions. It's easy to get lost in the thick arrangements, and the inventive use of samples and melodic elements invite repeat listening. Equally suitable for early morning hours, ultra-deep techno sets, or quiet home listening sessions.

Tracklisting:
A1: Punta Christo B1: Reverse Polarity B2: Smell of Rain
Infotext:
VDR009 "Punta Christo" marks the debut artist EP of London techno duo Our Mutual Friend. Glenn Middleditch and Mark Leigh are primarily known around London for their monthly "Friends of Ours" night in Peckham, which has allowed them to hone their live set alongside guests like Jane Fitz and Juju and Jordash, and their recently launched "Mutual Friend Recordings" label which made a splash earlier this year with a strong EP from STL. It was in fact that acclaimed producer who first connected the pair with Voodoo Down when they began looking for other labels to branch out on.
The EP consists of three diverse but complementary tracks: the title track being the atmospheric club-ready anchor, "Reverse Polarity" a rolling bass-and-tom workout, and "Smell of Rain" the psychedelic slow burner. This record caps off a fruitful year for the group (the title "Punta Christo" pays homage to the Dimensions Festival venue where they played for the first time over the summer), and hints at great potential and willingness to explore.

Infotext:
The sophomore EP by label head N'conduit.
The name and inspiration for the Pumps EP is derived from New York's infamous strip club, PUMPS. Located on the border of Queens and Brooklyn on the English Kills Canal, it's one of the last holdouts of seedy and unkempt Brooklyn, now that the high rises and artisanal establishments have taken over. The Pumps EP consists of three original tracks and a remix that are supposed to capture what's left of this through raw analog sequences and drum programming.
