Short info:
Joakim on Samurai:
This is a very personal record. I tried to channel the emotions and spontaneity I had when I first started making music. It's not about nostalgia, it's about the freshness and directness - call it naivety - you lose when you start becoming a professional musician. I moved to New York almost 5 years ago. These past few years have been a weird combination of excitement and quite challenging events. I've learnt what it means to be exiled, in every sense. This album is about that, being far away from "home" and from yourself and finding your way back. The album is built like an unknown city, you walk through it, making random turns, getting lost, some corners may bring back memories, you're getting away from something and at the same time you're on a quest. Hence the importance of listening to it in it's entirety (yes, I'm a utopian).
It will be the only physical release, very limited. No CD edition.
" Producer, D.J., label manager, tireless gem searcher, musician, music lover, it's hard to reduce Joakim to a single function" Xavier Veilhan, French artist et sculptor
" Tall lanky weird dude who makes great music "
Luke Jenner, singer for the band The Rapture
" Joakim is one of the key producers that accompanied me in my journey through electronic music." DJ Tennis, Italian DJ and producer

New album by french producer Joakim on his label Tigersushi. Through 16 tracks, he explores a world of sounds that blur the line between the natural and the artificial, a psychedelic journey on a modern Noah’s Ark, back to his roots in IDM, Classical music, avant-garde Pop and Ambient.

RELEASE INFO:
This is an appetizer : 4 “club” mixes of new tracks from Joakim’s forthcoming album Second Nature,
all re-mixed by the man himself, navigating between hypnotic Techno, trance-inducing Downtempo
and percussive New Beat.
This is probably Joakim’s most ambitious project so far. An album about our relationship to Nature to
make it short or how Western civilization disconnected Nature from Culture. Every song was born
using field recordings as a basis canvas, the sounds of Nature are the lead voice here. A nature that
is transformed, sublimized, questioning our ideas of what’s artificial, what’s the wilderness, the place
of humans in the age of the Anthropocene and painting a psychedelic landscape to open our ears and
our hearts.
The artwork features a lenticular print (2 images in 1) showing Naruto, a monkey who took a selfie
using a photographer’s camera who later tried to claim the copyright of that image. That claim raised
questions whether copyright can be extended to “non-humans” and was ultimately rejected by the
U.S. Copyright Office who specifically listed 'a photograph taken by a monkey' as an example of an
item that cannot be copyrighted. More

As the title suggests, Joakim recorded this new album last year at Studio Venezia, the installation/sculptural ensemble/recording studio created by Xavier Veilhan for the prestigious 2017 Venice Art Biennale. Built inside the French Pavilion & inspired by the grotto-like Merzbau by Kurt Schwitters, Studio Venezia had dozens of artists create and record there over the 6 months of the Biennale (from Chassol to Brian Eno, from Joakim to Sebastien Tellier), invited by Xavier Veilhan himself with the help of co-curator Christian Marclay. With an impressive collection of rare instruments from medieval horns to rare modular synths (Baschet crystals and percussions, a Buchla, a clavinet...), Studio Venezia was an amazing creative playground for the adventurous musician. Those instruments were captured by a team of sound engineers in the best possible way thanks to Nigel Godrich’s (Beck, Radiohead...) mobile studio loaded with state of the art vintage recording gear.In terms of influences, Joakim tried to channel the spirit of proto-ambient German heroes Cluster, 60s and 70s modal jazz, Japanese evocative minimalism and drone composers’ hypnotic transcendence.

The first release by Parisian iconoclast Joakim for his friends and European colleagues at DJ Tennis’ Life And Death records is a miniature nocturne for dance floor meditation, a cascade of unfurling fizzy moods and introspection, finally tuned and expertly rendered by the electronic music maestro.
"I met Manfredi (Tennis) through Luke Jenner (ex The Rapture) in NYC. When Manfredi has a few days off his busy touring schedule, he comes to my studio to work with Luke on their collaboration project. We usually talk about synths, food, DJ gossip and complain about espressos in NYC. About 6 months ago we were eating Korean fried chicken and Manfredi asked me if I’d like to do something for his label Life & Death. At the time I had a bunch of club tunes I started working on and somehow had a feeling some of them could be a fit for Life & Death so I played those and Manfredi very quickly picked one, ‘Daemon’. I thought putting out something on Life & Death was at the same time kind of odd (and if you didn’t notice yet, I like when things are unexpected) and totally appropriate. More

joakim - BOIPEBA DUB
In 2015 musician, producer, DJ, record collector and Tigersushi head honcho Joakim played for the first time at Mareh festival in Boipeba, Brasil. Like many before him and many since, he found the experience a transformative one. And why not? So many like-minded souls gathered together on a remote island in Bahia listening to the sounds of amazing DJs while dancing barefoot in idyllic coastal settings all night long. What's not to like? It's quite a concept. In the moment of that experience, Joakim vowed to head straight to the studio on his return home to try and recapture that magical vibe, which he did. And true to his word he offered it back to Mareh for release on their imprint. A musical gift from the heart. The wonderful percussion and drums characteristic of Joakim's productions drift in and around the mix and sit gently alongside the sound of the waves. Beautiful arps reach out and capture the glittering stars at night and the first glorious sign of light at sunrise as the party continues. Underneath everything the bassline continues to punch through, blending primeval Carnival vibes with an electronic sensibility. Lovingly mastered and beautifully pressed onto 10 inch vinyl in manila covers, this limited edition release is worthy of any record collection. It also represents a little piece of the magic that is Boipeba, and will certainly fit perfectly into those Balearic and Adriatic settings too.

Tracklist:
A1. Each Other (Joakim Club Mix) A2. Each Other (Vicram Remix) - B1. Each Other (A/JUS/TED Remix) B2. Each Other (DJ Slow Remix)
Short info: Joakim wishes to say few words about his new new ep: " 'Each Other' is one of my favourite tracks on Tropics of Love and the most emblematic of a direction I'd like to explore - slower, more soulful, more sensual.
This song wouldn't have existed without the collaboration of Akwetey Orraca-Tetteh. I worked with Akwetey about two years ago on the soundtrack of the artist film Grosse Fatigue by Camille Henrot (who then went on to win a Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale). We met through a common friend, and I didn't know that Akwetey was one of the founding members of Dragons of Zynth, a New York band I'm a big fan of. I asked him to come by my place to rehearse some pieces of the soundtrack he speaks/raps/sings on. When we took a break, I played him the demo of a song I didn't really know what to do with. A great idea: half an hour later, we had the lyrics; an hour later, Akwetey's vocals were recorded, in two takes; the track was there, it had become 'Each Other'.
Then came the remixes. DJ Slow spontaneously submitted a remix to me, although we'd never met. But I knew his work with Pelican Fly and as a DJ, so I was very flattered, and he managed to capture the essence of the track and get it to softly transform. A/JUS/TED is a duo from New York composed of Teddy Stuart and Justin Strauss, a legend of the Big Apple: he knew the Paradise Garage, deejayed at the Mudd Club for years, was a member of the band Milk & Cookies - he's a real figure of the Golden Age of New York underground. They also spontaneously asked me to remix the track, and having heard their versions for Holy Ghost or Blood Orange, I was totally sold. Finally, Vicram is a new French artist that I approached, he's quite mysterious and the few tracks and demos I have heard from him tell me he has great potential."

Anchored between the end of the 80's and the beginning of the 90's, when industrial music courted funk, when electro(nica) made a shy appearance and house was visceral and plaintive, also inspired by current R&B productions and futuristic hip-hop, Tropics of Love is a slow tempo record that shines like a steel sun and rings diabolically romantic. 'On the Beach', a Balearic sombre take on Neil Young's classic song, makes you melt with pleasure; 'This is My Life', a Lil' Louis inspired scathing techno attack makes you dance; you put your arms up in the air for 'Bring Your Love', a pure gem of mournful pop with Luke Jenner of The Rapture on the mic; you move your backside to the syncopated beats and the feline voice of Akwetey (Dragons Of Zynth) on 'Each Other'; and only Joakim can make you fall asleep with your eyes wide open on the deviant electro jewels that are 'Three Lazer Fingers' and 'Hero'. Altogether retro futuristic, nostalgic and forward looking, danceable and contemplative, Tropics of Love draws the fine contours for the soundtrack of a summer that promises to be radiant and solar. Tigersushi surprise us and drop a new 12" from label boss, Joakim... 2 Gloriously Produced Tracks, As Usual...! Almost 2 years have passed since Joakim released Nothing Gold. Not that he's been lazy. Those 2 years have probably been the busiest for the tall Musician/producer/DJ/label manager who produced numerous bands in his Fountain Studio in Paris (Zombie Zombie, Montevideo, Alba Lua, Acid Washed and more...). Joakim also did a few remixes (Aeroplane, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lescop, Arsenal, Renaissance Man...) ans recorded a collaboration EP with Kindness that was the debut release on his new label Crowdspacer (www.crowdspacer.com). Not to mention the constant touring, running Tigersushi records and a move from Paris to New York city! Since Joakim has 4 hands, he also managed to start recording some material for a new album between 2 recording sessions and just before he had to move his studio out, he finished those 2 tracks : the slow, claustrophobic but hopeful « Heartbeats » and « Another Light » which brings that subtle typical melancholy to the clubs. Now Joakim is setting up a mini home studio in his flat in NYC, somehow going back to his roots when he started making music at his parents house with a cheap keyboard more than 10 years ago. Usually in the music business, artists release a first single once the album is finished and start a promo campaign from there. But Joakim doesn't really understand the music business (don't tell anyone!), so he decided to release those 2 tracks without having any more finished material for his upcoming album nor an idea of what it will be like. In those times when everything is instant, he'd rather release new material leading to an album while the tracks are finished. Just like a work in progress you will witness an album taking shape before your ears. This is a way to bypass the traditional rhythm of an album launch when everything needs to be done and ready months before the actual release, which usually results in the author being already bored and working on something else when the music comes out.
