Cyphon Recordings continue their remarkable run of form with a brand new six track mini LP from Aussie powerhouse Ewan Jansen. With three decades of experience permeating his productions, Chroma Sea is a signature Jansen voyage - crisp, colourful, groove-heavy house and techno anchored by an analog weight.

A veteran of the scene, Jansen cut his teeth in the early '90s producing hardware-saturated house music drenched in depth and feeling. Having released on the likes of Moods & Grooves, Going Good, Freerange and Butter Sessions across the years, he’s also been captaining his own label Red Ember Records since 1997.

Leading the Chorma Sea odyssey is 'Salt Circuit', a squelching '90s tech house leaning track with a Detroit influenced touch, where bounce and power balance expertly with intricate synthwork and synapse-firing breakdowns.

'Brinewave' and 'Cybercanisco' follow, the former a head pickling, bass heavy, atmospheric electro joint. The latter a blinding yet blissful, Motor City channelling techno creation, that burrows deep down into your soul.

On the flip, 'Hydronexus' swallows you up in with a hit of absorbing space-age techno that envelopes your brain in layer upon layer of tactile sounds, before 'Faulty Gelfling' fires you out the other side into a twisted, robo electro hyperspace.

Closing out the release and bringing you back down to earth, 'Surabaya', where soft pads swell and oscillating synths wash over you, as that grooving low-end just keeps on rolling.
The Chroma Sea release expertly illustrates Ewan Jansen's ability to craft a vibrant blend of house and techno that nods across the ocean to the US and Europe, yet grounds itself down under. Earthly and analog yet explorative all at once.

Jansen refers toIsland Libraryas a "palette cleanser," an apt sentiment. There's something here for everyone. He has crafted a release to be taken in from start to finish, a treat for eager ears.

Western Australia's Red Ember Records is back from another archive diving adventure. "Embers Only : Swan Songs" presents four previously-unreleased, deeply emotive cuts by Ewan Jansen written between 1999-2000. The lead track 'Swan' marks the dance-floor tone in the collection with a hypnotic pseudo-electro groove sky lined by cathedral-like chords. Following on, 'Sea for yourself' reaches into deep minimal house territory with a powerfully gentle, piano topped, 4/4 approach. On the flipside, the earnest and leafy 'Love Machine' is drawn down the proverbial path, dropping broken beats and inhibitions along the way. The collection is signed off with the ambient chordal wash of 'Afterlude'... an introspective repeater equally on call for any early morning after party or your final few waking moments.

Ewan Jansen joins the Butter Sessions crew with five unique tracks spanning Deep House cuts to Electronic Jazz, recorded in Perth, Australia between 2002 and 2016. On the A side, Ewan offers up two memorable and moody gems 'Credo' and 'Harbinger' that are just as effective on the dance floor as they are in your lounge room! The B side sees something more obscure brewing, kicked off by 'Blueprint' a Balearic Compu-funked tune that makes you wish it lasted for hours, followed up by the timeless piece of Jazz infused Ambience 'On The Beach'.

The first Inner Shift encounter with Ewan Jansen was several years ago on a pair of test pressings, from Mike Grant of Moods and Grooves. The label hadn't even begun yet, but Ewan created a huge impression and wasn't to be forgotten by them later. Ffwd to 2016/17, Enter: "Return to Hyperbola". The first track in, you get a good tech house / deep house vibe called 'Docking Lane', fully equipped with lovely atmospheres, a driving kick and intelligent chords. Next is Bulkhead, mainly defined by a full-sounding, broken beat rhythm and expressive keyboards. B1 is 'Deceleration', another 4-4 deep house number, but with a subtle quirkiness and over all moody feel. On the B2 is 'Perspex', featuring a funky bass, nice pads and elevating keyboard part. Don't miss out, Ewan never fails to impress.

Perth, capital of Western Australia, sits where the Swan River meets the southwest coast. Sandy beaches line its suburbs giving purpose to hot summer days, but after sundown, the city is where it's at... if you know where to look. It's possible that this double-life is what inspired the deep, melodic, futuristic sounds of one of Australia's most mysterious electronic dance music labels of the 90's - Red Ember Records. Helmed by Ewan Jansen and along with Justin Zerbst (with contributions from Steb Sly and Andrew Carpenter) this micro label powered through the latter half of the 1990's with a slew of back-room productions; barely existent releases that were mainly pressed onto poly-plastic discs and hand distributed at a handful of near mythical live performances and local record spots in their hometown. Suffice to say it's the unique quality of the music contained on these lathes (chiefly produced by Jansen and Zerbst) and the sheer rarity of the physical items that has driven Red Ember firmly into the minds of vinyl fiends the globe over. Deep. That is one word that can be safely used when discussing the sonic bounty contained on a Red Ember record. Ewan Jansen's loose, harmonic style sits perfectly next to Justin Zerbst's faster paced, frenetic Techno sounds. The two's styles complimenting each other perfectly. The two producers have their very own unique vision of what House and Techno are and "Embers Only: Selected tracks 1997 - 1999" offers an overview of a selection of very carefully curated tracks taken from a handful of their early EP's and lathes.
